    Re: 2013 Atlanta Braves Thread

I think Uggla will start the season as the second baseman, and if he continues to struggle LaStella is the backup option along with Pena.

BJ cannot be that bad again, but I also said the same thing about Uggla.

I'm really rooting for Freddy Garcia and Eric O'Flaherty to return. Bartolo Colon and Roy Halladay would be great additions on 1 year deals.

Bobby elected to the HOF. Maddux and Glavine will be joining him, I'd imagine. Would have been cool for Smoltz to be in this class.

Halladay retired today…I wouldn't be opposed to giving Colon a 1-year deal. I wonder how Venters/O'Flaherty are doing. Losing them/Hudson really killed us last year when it came playoff time.

I like the Sale/Samrdzija rumors but the farm system is already gwtting thin. I would hate for it to get even thinner by trading for a pitcher unless we keep the big time prospects like the Upton trade.

I would prefer Sale over any pitcher out there. I will sign off on that. This ACE thing is full of sh*&... What is an ACE? David Price, Verlander or Kershaw are not constant 20 game winners. They are constant 200 plus strikeout pitchers. Give me Sale over any of them. He's younger and filthier. We ACE's in the making already. What is the urgency?

Congrats to Mr. Cox. He deserves all accolades of being a great baseball manager. Well now it is only four Atlanta Braves left that will be inducted in the Hall of Fame in our lifetime. Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and Chipper.

IMO an ACE is a guy you give the ball to and you know 1) he's going deep in the game and 2) he's going to give you a chance to win on most nights.

We have a bunch of #2's (Minor, Medlen, Teheran) right now because of point #1; none of them are capable of pitching deep into a game yet. Part of that is the Braves seem to have an infatuation with drafting slim/short pitchers and just don't have the body for pitching a lot of innings. All of those guys you listed are big bodies who are capable on any night of going 9 innings. Minor has the size, but he's still developing.

On Sale - I personally wouldn't want him because I worry about his arm/shoulder breaking down with his funky delivery. If he could be had for cheap, yes, you take a chance. With what they will ask in return it isn't worth it IMO.

I worry about Sale too. I have very little interest in Samardzija. His best era as a starter is 3.81. That'd be good for our #5 guy if Beachy is healthy. Sale, okay, but I'm a little nervous about arm trouble down the road too.

Anyone who doesn't think Verlander is an ace is insane. He had a 3.46 era this year in the AL. And that's a down year. He's been around 2.50 the two years prior.

Well with Colon off of the market now, the only way that Wren can upgrade the rotation is by making a trade. Samardzija would be okay for the right package. I would be upset if we traded any of our major league guys like Wood or Bethancourt for him though.

I don't think we need to upgrade the rotation. Sure, you always want more pitching. But you also don't want to block your young guys that are probably just about major league ready. And I'm not sure a guy like Samardzija helps us in the postseason. Is he really an upgrade over Minor, Medlan, Beachy, or Teheran?

Maybe it lacks an "ace" but I feel pretty good about a Medlen-Minor-Teheran-Beachy-Wood rotation with Hale on standby in AAA.

Honestly, I feel pretty good about the team as a whole though. We have flaws, but I don't think we need any major moves.

Me too. I think the idea of an ace is overrated. The Red Sox's "ace" only made like 12 starts, and then was pretty average in the postseason. And they won a title.

Plus, there are four guys on this rotation that can dominate, not just for a start, but for months at a time. If Beachy is healthy, he's an ace. Before the Tommy John, he was the likely All-star game starter that year. Minor has been amazing for a year and a half now. Teheran was fantastic after a shaky first month last year. Any of those guys could be a bonafide ace next year. And if they don't improve, and maintain the status quo (unlikely given their collective age), it's still a top 5 rotation as is.

Samardzija is an athlete. I think he did play baseball while at Notre Dame, but he was a hell of a receiver. The Falcons could use another Finneran next year with Gonzalez leaving, but not the Braves. It would be like taking on another project. Hale showed that has same kind of stuff that Samardzija throws. CWS Sale for Medlen straight up is the way to go. IMO

Hahaha. Medlen for Sale won't happen. What possible incentive would the White Sox have to make that deal. While we're at it, can we trade Heyward for Trout straight up?

We made a move! Former top prospect Mat Gamel signed to a minor league deal.

I like it. Low risk, potential high reward. Good left-handed bat off the bench. And maybe he challenges Johnson for playing time if he can turn it around.
