    re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread

I am definitely surprised to see Dusty get fired/resign whatever happened there. Wouldn't think that would happen with the $ he is getting paid next year. Hopefully they can hire a good manager, whether it be in house or somewhere else.
Seems like Price is one of the top candidates for the job.

        re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread

So I didn't post anything in this thread all year, lol, but have enjoyed reading it.

I think firing Dusty basically had to happen. The way the 3 postseason years have ended have been such epic failures what else is management to do? 2010 the Halladay no-hitter, critical baserunning mistakes, errors- very sloppy play. 2012 blowing a 2-0 lead at home, Posey's grand-slam where Latos should have been pulled. 2013 ending on a 6-game losing streak.

Of course, this is not all Dusty's fault. His SP failed him down the stretch this year(0-6 with an ERA 7+ in the last games). Yes Votto got on base a ton this year (8th in MLB in runs scored, two guys behind him had 100+ RBI) but he played poor defensively, and didn't produce in the clutch as we typically expect him to. IMO, management failed the team by not picking up another consistent R handed bat. Reds were 27-25 vs LHP this year and they made no move to improve it.

But ultimately it came to the postseason results. The fact is his teams have played tight, made uncharacteristic errors (fielding, baserunning), and generally fell flat on their face in the postseason. If you believe the Cowboy that this is because Baker never fostered a "must win" environment in the clubhouse- then Baker must fall on the sword.

Jocketty next still working for the Cardinals, with Soriano out there and Byrd all while knowing Ludwick would not return until August he did nothing.

I agree with Hannigan and Chappy, but I can't see the argument for Cozart. Chappy needs to either be a starter or traded...no other way around it. Mesoraco might be a full season starting away from being a middle of the lineup power hitter.

Cozart plays above average defense and while not a great hitter overall, he did change his approach 2/3 of the way through the season and he hit a lot better. Plus he had 63 RBI's which isn't too bad for a 7/8 hole hitter.

Also, if we continue to squeak into the playoffs and never go further than a wild card game or first series, then we pretty much live in irrelevancy anyway. Might as well see if someone else can get us over the hump.

Glad I didnt bet the farm on Dusty not getting fired, lol. I really thought he would get another yr rather than eat his contract.
Now they need to fire Jacoby, as that is where the biggest issue is imo. The pathetic offense is on the hitting coach, the weak management of team is on Dusty.
I made the comment last winter on the REds forums that we were getting rid of the wrong ss, but of course that went over real well with some:wink: Didi I believe will be a all star ss 1 day, Cozart will not most likely. I do think Cozart is a solid ss and could get better at the plate with the right hitting coach.
I truely believe Frazier will come back a better player next yr. He work hard to improve defense in 1 yr and I think his offense will be better next yr.
Mr. .198 aka Ryan Hanigan needs to find another uniform to wear, Mez is and needs to be the everyday catcher, and with a new manager that will probably happen but Dusty favored Vets. Hani had some solid yrs and a good defensive catcher but I think he might be washed up. I know the injury slowed him down this year, but you cant use that excuse for all yr.

Going to be interesting to see who becomes manager. I just hope like hell that Jacoby is being fired as I write this

Hanigan also caught Bailey's 2 perfect games, far better with staff than Mez

I don't disagree about Didi but he isn't in the organization any longer. Cozart, again, is above average defensively and was serviceable at the plate this year. In August and September, he hit .282 and .281. This was after he changed his approach. Continue on that path with above avg defense and that's not bad.

With that said, if another option is available that is an upgrade, go for it!

Wait, am I reading this statement wrong or are you hoping that Hannigan is the everyday catcher again next year over Mez?

Hani does a great job catching, but when you can hit worth a lick you need all the htting you can get:wink:
Also catcher ERA Mez was better this year than Hanigan, and while that really dont mean all that much I think it shows Mez improved a great deal behind the plate this year. His hitting was better but not where it needs to be or will be as I think he will only get better.

                              Interesting article from Jon Heyman

Baker challenged Reds GM: 'If you want to fire someone, fire me'

It all came to a head in one conversation, a conversation about a coach, and sources say Dusty Baker wasn't about to let a coach take the blame for what went down with the Reds this year.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty in a year-end hash-out session about the team's dissatisfying season told Baker he was intending to fire hitting coach Brook Jacoby, according to a person familiar with the situation. And that was all Baker had to hear.

Baker wasn't the one who brought in Jacoby, but he also knew it wasn't Jacoby's fault. So Baker took the bold step that led to Jocketty ousting him as Reds manager.

"If you want to fire someone, fire me,'' Baker told Jocketty.

Baker may have been worn out by all the recent negativity regarding the Reds' unsatisfying season, anyway. Rare has someone been criticized so much for guiding an imperfect team to a 90-win season, but Baker became a target. He was a target of some fans, of many sabremetricians. And ultimately, he was a target of Jocketty.

The conversation ended right there on Wednesday with Baker's invitation to dismiss him. The two are not close, and people close to the situation say their relationship was "distant" or even "strained." But Baker couldn't have been sure Jocketty would take him up on his offer.

But he did. The next day, Thursday, Baker was called in. And Jocketty fired him. So there went Baker's Reds career, blown up trying to protect a coach under attack.

Maybe if Dusty had shown that fire with his team like he did over a dimwit hitting coach he might have a job still. Hope Jacoby is fired next, kind of looking like it. I would love to be there to see it, I hate Jacoby and told my wife I willl not go to opening day if that fool is still hitting coach.
