Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
I think putting Bruce in the 2 hole was stupid, but NOBODY has hit after the all star break, so at least he is willing to mix it up to try and get something to work. Not Price's fault the offense is awful. Blame Jocketty for setting the team up for failure.Cincinnati Reds University of Kentucky Cincinnati Bengals

I don't like Bruce. One trick pony. He somewhat fits into a team as a masher who can get hot, but that sure as hell ain't this team. I think having Votto on in front of him for years has really inflated his value, and his value was even that high to begin with. If we could move him for a team looking for a quick fix for their offensive woes, I'd entertain that thought.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
Here are my 1000% awful trades that would never happen in real life-
Cueto for Corey Seager + Grant Holmes (How scary would LAD be with 3 aces?!)
Ben Zobrist for Phil Ervin + Donald Lutz + Jon Moscot
Homer Bailey for anybody that wants that contract.
Build for next year, when there will be "hype" because of the all star game being here. Shut Votto + Phillips down. I don't think Bruce is anywhere near 100% either (he rushed back from that knee surgery) so possibly let him recover as well for next year. It'd be dumb to try and get rid of him now when he has had an abysmal year. Give a guy like Negron or Rey Navarro (in triple A currently) to show if they can be every day second base/SS in the future.
Then you go into next year with more $$$ available with Bailey gone, lock Latos up as your ace and pray Cingrani + Stephenson can fill the void in the back of the rotation.
I agree 100% with you. Bruce has been in the league for long enough to have realized his potential and all we have seen is some hot streaks. He is consistently inconsistent with the exception of this year where he has been consistently bad. I would move him in a hearbeat if you could replace his defense and add to the offensive end. Unfortunately he has been doing so bad this year I am not sure we could get much in return.Last edited by redsrule; 07-30-2014, 11:48 PM.Cincinnati Reds University of Kentucky Cincinnati Bengals

He has always been way too streaky, but I don't think he is anywhere close to 100% right now. Honestly, I think we can live with .250ish with 30 home runs & 100 RBI like he normally has while playing gold glove defense. Selling low on him would suck, especially since if he returns to anything like he has been in the last 3 years he a decent bargain $$$ wise.
The problem I see for the Reds is that their starting pitching is the reason they are even close to .500 and after next year we stand to lose half the rotation. If it weren't for Votto's 10 year extension with 3 years left for $200+ million (this has a chance to go down as one of the worst signings in MLB history if Votto never returns to form), the Reds might have a chance to sign most of those pitchers. But between his, Bailey and Phillip's contracts, we might...might be able to sign 2 of them.
I would give serious consideration to trade Latos and Leake before they hit fee agency in an effort to free up enough cap space to resign Cueto. But I have a feeling even if they did free up some space, it still wouldn't be enough to hold on to Cueto. He is going to demand a lot of money after next year unless he falls apart or gets injured.
The Reds should be the poster child for other small market teams to never ever ever sign anyone to a 10 year deal worth that much. I like Votto as much as anyone and I hope he can return to form, but his contract has completely handicapped the Reds. I mean he still had 3 years left on his contract when they signed him to that and gave them a total of 1 more good year. Would it have killed them to wait a year or two to see if he stayed healthy and continued to perform at that level before offering a massive 10 year contract? It isn't like players get THAT much more money than what he got so even if he continued to produce the way he was, I don't think his value would have gone up so much we couldn't have afforded him. But regardless, no one in baseball, let alone a player for a small market team, should get 10 year contracts. There are just too many variables and too much time for things to happen negatively to make that long term contract look good in the end. But that is a completely different discussion.
This year, the Reds should shut down Votto and Phillips and see if they can get some very good prospects that can help within a year by trading one or two of their starters. Then pray that Cingrani realizes he can't be an MLB pitcher throwing a fastball 95%+ of the time and that Stephenson continues on his path to the MLB and can make it by early to middle of next year. That's all my opinion though and I am sure most of you would disagree and that's ok. That's what's great about being a fan, we can debate about things and in the end it still doesn't make a lick of difference what we think.#WeAreUKComment

I'd love to see us trade Broxton and Simon for prospects...yeah it won't happen, but it seems realistic enough.Comment

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
How the heck is it possible that 2 hours before the trade deadline the Reds decide that they should realize this season is lost and start looking toward the future?
You can't tell me that the Lester trade made the light go off in the front office head that maybe they should trade a starting pitcher. There is no way you can convince me, that people that are owner's in baseball and a GM that did so many great things for the Cards, just up and decided in the last second how to deal with the rest of the season. Bushleague.
I saw that Junketty's contract is up after this year. We will be winners as an organization if he isn't re-signed. Unbelievable this guy. Is he still on the Cards payroll? He made moves all the time with the Cards but flat out refuses to do anything while with the Reds?
"I like our team" Really? How about you go outside and play a game of hide and GFY Walt Junketty!#WeAreUKComment

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
I'm glad they decided against an all-out fire sale. I'm glad they didn't trade Mat Latos (as it was reported a few hours before the deadline they were dangling him). I'm glad they decided against picking up a bat because with the moves the Brewers and Cardinals made, the Reds are not making the playoffs this year.
But I'm disappointed that they at least didn't entertain the idea of trading a couple guys with some value like Alfredo Simon and Jonathan Broxton. With the way these two guys are pitching, it's a case of sell high...and Jocketty was asleep at the wheel again.
We need a new GM in the worst way (Jocketty was ranked 26th by Sporting News among all GMs). Maybe we can get Brad Pitt playing Billy Beane?Comment
