Re: Selection Sunday Thread
Looking at that list, experience only helped in Florida's and North Carolina's case.
But your original statement was talent didn't mean a damn thing, which is nonsense cause it has been ages where a National Champion hasn't had some type of execllent talent on their team.Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Michigan

Yea I admit I kind've worded it wrong with that. What I was trying to say is that Experience definitely helps you MORE in the NCAAs than just having straight talent does.Looking at that list, experience only helped in Florida's and North Carolina's case.

Re: Selection Sunday Thread
Sadly, the only experience > talent example that I can think of is '99 UConn over Duke. Richard Hamilton was the only 1st round pick on their roster, and unless I'm missing someone, Khalid El-Amin and Jake Voskuhl were the only other two even drafted, whereas Duke had 5 future lottery picks in Avery, Brand, Battier, Maggette, and Langdon.Comment

I don't think experience really helped those teams much.Looking at that list, experience only helped in Florida's and North Carolina's case.

The first Florida team was four sophomores and a junior, but the junior was the worst of the starting five.
North Carolina was an older team its final year, but I don't think it was experience as much as it was development of Lawson and a much, much worse field. The previous two years they lost to Kansas and Georgetown and I think they would have lost to those teams last year if they had played them (not the 08-09 teams but the exact incarnations they lost to).
Some players need to develop and thus play better as upperclassmen. Wall, Cousins, and Bledsoe are talented to begin with and do not need additional time.
They could certainly lose, but that's because anyone can lose in a one game scenario. Duke returned everyone but Battier (might have been another player) from the 2001 team and lost in the Sweet 16.
Elite talent beets out mediocre players and experience by this time in the year.Comment

When I said Florida, I was talking about the second year. I know for a fact the first year the team really didn't have the experience.Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Michigan

Re: Selection Sunday Thread
I will say this on his side: I think that a lot of times more experienced teams will beat more talented teams in the earlier rounds of the tournament. But I don't think your team can lack talent if you want to be in the championship game or the Final Four. George Mason was the exception.I don't think experience really helped those teams much.

Re: Selection Sunday Thread
i dont understand the hate for Zoubek
the guy is an absolute beast on the offensive glass which is where he scores most of his points from anyway, he doesnt really take many shots as he only takes 14 percent of the shots when hes on the floor
he probably could turn the ball over less and probably should get to the free throw line more for somebody who is such a good offensive rebounder but his offensive game is actually very very solid for what he doesComment

Thats exactly the point - who cares about Zoubek? Why is he an issue?Comment

Re: Selection Sunday Thread
There's no way they deserved that #1 seed in my opinion and not only did they jump Syracuse for the 3rd seed overall, but then they were rewarded with the easiest bracket. I'm sick of the "red carpet" treatment for Duke year after year. It's just ridiculous.Duke has significantly more competent players on the inside this year than they have had any year since Sheldon Williams left, IMO. None of the guys are all-conference caliber, but they have significant depth with little drop-off between Zoubek, both Plumlees, and Thomas.
IMO, so long as Kyle Singler continues to play well, Duke is going to be a very tough out for any team.Comment

Re: Selection Sunday Thread
I'm sayin!! This is the joke of the freakin tournament! How does Duke, who played in the watered down ACC, jump Syracuse as the 3rd #1 seed, get the play in game (I thought the overall #1 seed was supposed to get that) then get the easiest brackett? This is blatant favoritism for coach K. What a freakin joke.Comment

Re: Selection Sunday Thread
Catching up on the thread.
Duke getting the 3rd #1 seed over Cuse was laughable. I have no problem with them being a #1 seed but their road looks to be hand picked by Coach K.
UT in the 2nd round is no given at all. They have the better player in Aminu, better size down low, and one of the fastest players in the country (Ish Smith).
And give me Talent any day over Experience. Experience is for mid-majors who don't have the talent to consistently bang with the big boys.
If Kentucky isn't a serious title contender than I don't know who is. Like ehh said, you're zone is going to have to be serious to stop Wall/Bledsoe from penetrating and all the teams in the top half of their brackets are man-to-man squads. Maybe(huge maybe) Wiscy or Temple could frustrate them with their slow down styles but neither one of them would scare me if I was a UK fan.Comment
