    Re: NBA 2k14's Dribbling questions

It's time to sticky this thread. Sundown and Beluba are dropping some good stuff in here. Should also unstick the 2K13 ones it's a mess right now.

I'am really happy about the improvement on the ballhandler movements. You really feel free now on the perimeter. Not getting stuck into animations when a defender is nearby... This used to drive me crazy in 2K13, forced into turboing around. Love how player's speed is very sensitive/responsive on the left stick too. Good job on that.4

Btw I have found a slight variation of the normal crossover. I'am trying to upload a replay to youtube to show you. I like it.

Oh so that's why there's aways a pump fake after the fake pass. Don't really like but it could be useful if you could fake pass into a layup.

You can fake pass on the move now.

2k13 had a "best play available" option, didn't it? wasn't that the same thing as smart play? i think it was just one more button press.

anyway, i'm fine with things staying the way they are as long as you can still get that layup direction thing working. i figured having eurostep on RS might prevent adding layup direction, but seems like you've got it figured out.

i wouldn't mind eurostep being double tap on shot button, but ONLY if it didn't add an extra delay to the shot button responsiveness when shooting...i'm not sure how much delay is caused by adding double taps and taps to a button. if it would add a delay, then it probably wouldn't be worth it since shot button responsiveness is pretty important. you would also have to make sure that if you trigger a eurostep with the double tap, the player wouldn't attempt a second eurostep after that if you move RS left or right...there would have to be a special case where directly following a double tap eurostep, moving RS left/right would initiate a layup instead of another eurostep (or you'd risk being called for traveling and it would defeat the purpose of having the option of a double tap euro step).
Euros are supposed to be away left/right. Training camp is incorrect. Although it usually works just going left or right since the windows are so big. That won't be the case in NG though.

And yeah, any time you add double tap functionality, it effectively doubles the delay for everything on that button, even single press moves. We always try to avoid it for that reason. Even the difference between the detection of a button press compared to press and release (tap) is significant for most guys in the office. That's why Total Control Passing was an option instead of defaulted on and eventually why it saw its demise.

Not that I hate the controls because I don't but knowing alot of these things actually helps alot especially to those who are over analytical fans who really need to understand "why"

Man. We have a lead dev in here taking questions and mowing them down. Even giving insight into why certain decisions were made. This is how handle your business with a community. Awesome stuff here.

(Wish we could have the same kind of interaction with the roster dev/s)

Oh okay, again thank you beluba for taking time out of your very busy day, and I personally wanted to ask you three questions regarding dribbling.

With some moves I notice I'm not exploding into a launch(maybe i missed the launch window) but the ball handler will go into a jog, and this happens when I want to launch with the hand the ball is in, crossover launches are fine tho. Is it something I'm doing or is the job a new launch as I did a crossover out of it. I know this sounds confusing.

Also How many dribbling moves are in the game this is something I always wondered.

And I guess I'll ask this same question again this year are you happy with the new dribbling system? I am lol.

And yeah, the hitch in spin shots bothers me too. We're going to re-visit the branching tech for spin shots next year.
I think spins on LS would be readily accepted with a short adjustment period-- after all, spins have been on LS in every game since 2K11 if not earlier. It was even in 2K13 except it was redundantly mapped on RS as well. 2K14 is the first game not to have LS-spin in a long while, so I don't think it would take long for us to go back to what we've used for years.

Behind the back was also on LS using the same half circle spin on the stick when iso-motion was only on LS, but one was with the LT modifier and one without. For the life of me, I could never remember which was which. I still can't-- but moving spins to LS and behind the back to RS makes that extremely intuitive and easy to remember. LS spins your player. RS wraps your arm behind your back.

If you decide that you do like LS-halfcircle for spin but not RS-halfcircle for behind-the-back, there's still an added advantage-- you can keep RS-halfcircle-hold for spin shot and it would simplify your branching and animation logic: LS-halfcircle will always play the spin-dribble animation, and RS-halfcircle will always play the spin-into-shot animation.

You won't need share a common spin animation between the two to branch from and can capture separate ones that look correct for both. You also get rid of the current hitch in spin-shot for free.

My personal preference is to map behind-the-back to RS-halfcircle, mainly because it frees up RS-back for something else. I'm sure it can be mapped to something nifty and useful.

For what it's worth, the problem also exists with all the other escape dribble steps. Early forced branching doesn't look that bad for some of them, but it doesn't look great. I'm not sure if variable, interruptible escape step sizes was an intentional part of the design but I'm not seeing a big benefit there, and I really liked being able to double-tap-hold an RS direction and get a full, seamless escape dribble shot in 2K13. I know we'll be able to do this again once it's fixed.

Also seems like allowing us to queue a shot early in the escape animation using double-tap-hold RS would give the branching engine a cue to select or blend an escape/step back animation that lands with the correct shooting base for a player before seamlessly branching into his shot. Right now escape moves finish in a wide dribble stance base and then the feet slide together into the actual shooting form and doesn't look as nice as last year's step-back escape shot.

Seems like the simple fix would be to bring back last year's step-back when we early queue a shot with double-tap-hold RS. I'm guessing this year's Hop Shot animations can't be used directly because they might be missing something appropriate for standing step back.

I do understand that doubles the input delay of all moves because the engine needs to wait for the maximum amount of time in which a second tap can occur and still be considered a valid double-tap. Perhaps the escape animation can start on the first tap to avoid the delay and can branch or blend into a correct ending based on whether that second tap comes? It would be a shame if we lost the beauty of last year's seamless standing escape shots for good.

Speaking of Hop Shots animations, many of them look gorgeous this year.
