Re: Why Do You People like this Game?

You know, I am getting pretty old nowadays.

And there's days when I think "man, why do I even read this site"...

But then threads like this one appear and you realise why you come here most days to read.

This is a great thread. Thread of the NBA gaming season IMO.

Really good points about both games. Enjoyed every post

Yep how many times have you seen Hot sauce or Alston do this move and then back off a little and tell the defense come get me and then do some other moves ( that are most likely illegal and not basketball at all) an then go to the hole and lob to a streaking player who was hardly even defended at all for the jam. Now 2k doesn't quite go that far but the setup move is there. Which in a sim bball game should not be there. It should only be in the street part of the game. Now I know that you can adjust sliders to eliminate this but thats not the point. The point is it shouldn't be there in a "sim game".

But I agree and disagree with what you said above. While most can do everything others can do, players still play different from one another to me due to there DNA and I think that is more authentic.

For example, I run with the Pistons. I can tell you this, I haven't been nearly as effective with Iverson as I was with Billups. I actually struggle with Iverson for the most part. With Billups he had his spots on the court where he was more effective, I could post Billups and I also was able to drive with him with good amount of success. I've tried the same play style with Iverson and have been unable to yield the same results I did with Billups, so I've ended up having to change my whole offensive scheme. What I've found out and what has worked for me is getting Iverson on the elbows and around picks for spot up jump shots, using his runner jump shot in the lane, along with moving him over to the 2 spot. While most due have some of the same animations, the stars due have different moves from Manu to Pierce to Chris Paul to Dirk....etc. And I actually like that it's subtle and not overly done because for the most part in regular NBA games you don't see alot of that flash that you see in 2k9. It happens once in awhile but it's not all the time. Take Rondo for instance, you can drive the lane with him in this game and he'll do a couple different lay up animations, but then out of nowhere you'll see an open lane and drive to the basket with him and BAM!!!!! He'll go in for a nice one handed slam!!! Now mind you I might not even see him slam for like another 5 or 6 games. Thats authentic to me, that's fresh. In 2k you'll see alot of craziness all the time but that's just my opinion. You won't see Micheal Finley going in to the basket for a dunk like you will Kobe or Vince. Now don't get me wrong, they could still use more variety in animations and clean them up a bit as well. But I like a simple basic fundamentally sound game of basketball. Ball screens, picks, post play, mid-range jumpers with a bit of fancy mixed in every now and then not all the time.

And let me tell ya, when it comes to the defensive side of the ball, he's been nothing but a liability for me. I mean people have been absolutely killing me with him out there on the court and I didnt have this problem with Billups, he was a better defender for me. I believe this to be a deep game in many ways. If they fix things like the glitch fastbreaks, double teams, and defensive matchups this game will be above and beyond great!!!!

Agree totally re the Iverson / Billups points + your points about what would make the game great. Excellent post.

I am playing a few games with the Kings...and they are a completely different challenge to other teams I've used in this game. K-Mart is out injured, so I've basically got no 'go to guy'. I am having to run plays constantly just to score.

I've been using Brad Miller as a passing big and trying to open the floor up (something the spacing in this game allows you to do)...I've had Miller playing the high post and hitting cutters, I've had to rotate the ball around the perimeter looking for the 'best shot'...I've had to really run an offense / no "Kobe, LeBron, Melo" type player who can drive at will...

All players definitely aren't the same. It's a completely different experience to use a 'star-less' team.

For example in 2k9, the ai is very scripted and a lot of what occurs in that gaem is a percentage. if you upfake, the cpu will either go for the upfake, strip the ball or not do anything. After a while you notice the pattern and there isn't as much to one on one matchups. you can pretty much blow by guys at will and there isnt a whole lot to it. The same goes for double teams, etc. If you double in 2k the cpu will pass out of the double 100% of the time. In live the AI is much more organic and does things dependant on the situation. The way players interact and bounce off each other and the way the momentum system is done in live as well as the footplanting all adds to this organic feeling. Live is much more advanced. The engine just is and if you have played both games i dont know how you can say otherwise.
That pretty much sums up why I am playing LIVE this season and not 2K (unless they fix those things with a patch, which seems extremely unlikely). The 2K9 CPU always passing out of a double team = a huge game killer for me. I need some uncertainty / some sort of feeling of not know what will happen in my basketball gaming experience.

LIVE is raw...but I don't know what's going to happen from game to game.

I hate that in 2K if I hit "double team"...Kobe will pass up the game winner every time and LBJ will pass to Big Ben for the last shot of the game...I hate the fact I feel like I am playing a 'script', not a random game.

some good comments as well as great observations. this is like the blueprint for what either game should be looking towards 2k10. Hopefully they will take notice as some of the things said in this thread can help define what "we" the os community desire in an nba game. Irregardless of maker. sort of a combined wishlist thread with truly viable options for making the best game possible. I do think live has a leg up as what they are doing with their engine seems to have the most upside. Im anxiously awaiting 2010.

Re: Why Do You People like this Game?

I usually move the comparison threads because they dont belong in the individual game forums, and even though this probably wasn't the intent of the OP when he started the thread

I must say that I applaud all of you guys for speaking out and giving your hearts feeling about the game. The devs should read this thread and take note of what's at the heart of you guys gaming wants, needs, experiences, etc.. because there is alot to be picked up in this thread.

I'd sticky this one but it's not going anywhere anyhow, so continue on please.

This is how OS used to be, and there are a great group of guys in here that dug in and put it all out there. Big ups to all of you, and especially for getting Da Czar to finally come out of hiding...lol

Lots of good to great points in the thread though. If anyone wants to decide whether or not to play either game, this is the place. There is non of that false and thinly veiled impression stuff in here.

I play Live because I can not play 2K for the Life of me ( I suck). 2K blows me out of the gym. Live I play default all-star and have a blast. I have played 2K on Pro and get beat down by back door passes, fast breaks. I can't hit lay ups and jump shot be all over the place. Live I can play right out the box.

Well I can't speak for everyone but for me its not a question of difficulty of the game. I have beaten 2k on hof regularly before the patch. You vets no what I'm talking about. I just want a game that represents what I see on tv on tnt or espn. To me thats what live does better. On 2k you have super defenders that never take a play off or maybe never get out of position and can't recover. On live I see this. There are several times I see that defense have helped and went to far and can't get back. The best example would be to swing the ball around the perimeter a few times on 2k then do the same on live. Live you will see you can get a decent look if you swing quick enough. 2k the man will be draped all over the defense. Especially on the harder levels.

That's a good point Sirjam. Live just feels more alive to me. I know thats corny but 2k9 is a great game in a great series. It might even be teh last of its kind as far as a real sim. But I think they went a little bit far with certain things. Live and NCAA for that matter just do something else. EA has always had a knack for capturing something that you dont necessarily get with other games. I know a lot of you guys are 2k diehards and i understand why because I like them as well, btu one thing i never liked abotu 2k games is how robotic and predictable their games are. EA lost their way for a while. But for whatever reason they've found their way again and are getting back to what made them the company they are in the first place. That's a good thing. That's not a knock on 2k it's just good to see is all. I'm really enjoying this game and the little things that it brings as well as NCAA, and it reminds me of the old days.

                          Seriously?....

I respect an opinion, and I own both games, and to me Live just doesn't cut it, 2k9 may just have the same old gameplay, but the fact is, that even with Live's updated gameplay and new features, it still can't be ahead of 2k's non updated gameplay(that's what some like to think), I haven't played NCAA but reviews still say it sucks, but that's not my place to call, since I've never played it...

But since I own both 2k9 and Live, I think I have a valid opinion...

First things first, the atmosphere in Live, feels so boring compared to 2k9, that is not how basketball is on TNT, when playing 2k9, I feel like I'm watching a real basketball game

Rebounding - Rebounding is still a serious issue in Live, with the greatest of slider settings, guys still stand around and either let the ball hit the ground, or the CPU gets it for a offensive rebound, horrible...

Player Interaction - I didn't know what to call this, but I'm constantly seeing players literally morph through my centers on the way to the basket, I've never seen this in 2k9, and I also haven't seen the players "Slide" in 2k9, like some claim they do...

Basic Gameplay - Too many times have players been out of bounds and not even called for it, I heard about this before the game released but I didn't think it was that big of issue, boy, was I wrong...

Live has stepped it up, no doubt, but as far as being better than 2k, Not yet, maybe next year.

Not trying to make this a 2k Vs Live thing but, both games have morphing and imo 2k9 has it the worst. Players go through each other and so does the ball. The sliding on defense also make it unacceptable. These issues have ruined 2k9 for me.

The worst thing about 2k is that defenders never give you any room. When you want to pass the ball around the perimeter it is always risky, because they are so close to their man.

Another thing is the lack of footplanting. There is a delay when going for the jumpshot which helps the defender to recover too fast.

Those two stick out, besides the lack of spacing and robotic feel.

That's because of the jumpshot animations. They square up on each shot and only shoot an up and down jumpshot instead of being able to shoot off the dribble. Its one thing that sucked in college hoops to me, because beating your man is only half the battle.

In the beginning I kept asking if you could shoot off the dribble because of this, but everyone kept referring to the off the run animation.

I do feel you, that is something that needs to be changed. Players make a move and go up in one motion all the time in the nba.
