You've got to look at what you want your player to do, and you've got to compare the performance on the court.
I try and have all of my players do balanced physical training unless there is a glaring disparity in stamina (speed training does not increase things enough to be worth the time imo).
As for skill training? I always keep one balanced training per week and then try and focus on training for something else with the other. For instance, I will have my big men train in inside scoring and my outside shooters in jump shooting (outside scoring?). I don't usually train awareness unless the player is complete or I want him to jump to the Pro's early, but that's because my sliders give very little awareness to user team CPU controlled players.
However, if one of your players constantly gets burned, it might be a good idea to have them train in defense. Or if they are a PG that can't pass, as noted above, go with skills.
A little bit of micromanaging at the beginning of each season can go a long way. Your players may not have super high overalls, but they can be good at very specific skills and end up contributing greatly to the team.
