Re: The College Hoops 2K8 esoteric information thread (learn and discuss the arcane)

    I must be missing something:

    1. Hoya High Post - A balanced playbook featuring plays where big men come to the high post area.

    2. Carolina - A balanced playbook featuring isolation plays.

    3. Yellow Jacket - A balanced playbook featuring plays for 3pt shooters.

    4. Heathcote - A balanced playbook featuring low post plays.

Those are the 4 playbooks I have. Am I supposed to edit the other, generic ones as well? Or should I use these 4 for all of the teams?

Oh, you DL'd different playbooks than the one I use. I have never used those ones before, I have Koshi's balanced, post and perimeter books. Leave the generic ones alone.

But yes, use only those four playbooks for every team. You can only assign one per team per game obviously, so before the start of each game at the controller select screen press Y/triangle and change the CPU's playbook to the one you want. In this menu it will only show up as Custom PB 1 and Custom PB 2, it will not show the name like Hoya High Post. That's only the name of the file.

The crappy thing is that you can only have two custom playbooks loaded at once, so you'll have to quit your legacy and load a different playbook if you need it.

After playing this game for so long, the one thing that still bugs me is the stinking auto drive animation the CPU does. There's no way to stop it once the CPU decides to drive to the basket, unless you jump at the perfect time. 9/10 times it's going in or a foul. That's the one thing that bugs me, the mid air collision animations suck.

Does anyone know if 4 star players will ever walk on to big schools. I am asking this because I am pursuing my first 4 star player at Loyola Maryount. Right now I am 2nd on his list, at 85 percent. He has 100 percent interest in UCLA, but they don't have any scholarships to offer this year. So has anyone ever had a 4 star player walk on before, because I would like to if I might get this guy, or if he will just walk on to UCLA. He says he isn't concerned with playing at a big program if that has anything to do with it.

From my experiences the recruit will no longer be interested in UCLA a week or two into the offseason recruiting stage unless they offer a scholarship. Recruits will take the scholarship over the walk-on opportunity.

That isn't to say someone won't come in late and swipe him from you, but that isn't very likely....it is possible though.

A question I've always had... What happens if a 5* recruit doesn't get recruited, i.e. International, or just can't make a decision. (I"ve seen it in NCAA football and 1-2 times in CHoops) Do they just get erased from database?

best way to get you're legacy off to a jumpstart! i usually see at least 2-3 guys like that anywhere in 3-4* guys once in awhile even a 5* if you're lucky

And one thing that I noticed that no one had said was that you can change the coach profiles of the computer teams to make the teams play more like them - this is especially important defensively.

A great way to increase turnovers and just make running general half-court offense tougher is to change the opponents press to half-court press to Always, After Basket, or Occasionally depended on the frequency that that team does it. This does a pretty good job of extending the defense as you would see teams do. Duke, Kansas and Purdue are examples of teams that almost always pressure to half-court. Teams like Wisconsin, Illinois, North Carolina and Memphis will occasionally come out and guard you.

The best thing about the halfcourt press setting is that the computer guards the ball handler within arms length all the way to half court. Otherwise in man-to-man, the defense just lags off if you are far enough away from the basket so there is hardly ever a risk of a 5 count. If you don't want a five count, you'd better call your play before you cross half court. If no one is open right away, then just pass to the nearest teammate and then get it right back to your PG with a fresh five count to start the offense. With the half-court press on for the computer and if you're trying to run plays, you live in constant fear of the five count - as I'm sure that teams do when they play tough games against gritty teams.

Also, it makes running backdoor type plays very useful which how to teams IRL relieve the pressure of a smothering defense.

Note: Obviously it is much easier to beat your man in this defense if you just do the step out dribble over and over again, but I'm assuming that we are not cheesers here.
You wouldn't happen to have a file or spreadsheet of each or some of the coach's profile settings for this would you? Thanks.

Yea that is exactly what ended up happening and I was able to sign him pretty easily. After the first week of offseason recruiting, I was the only interested team in him. I guess the other teams just gave up because he was so interested in me.

There's gotta be someway that someone who's good w/ modding can take this

And put it into commentary form for a "College Hoops 2k11".

on offense, how do you get guys to move around (automatically set picks on their own, etc.) without actually calling plays? do you have to up offensive awareness?

You can't, they always stand there. It's the biggest reason I stopped playing this game for the time being.

With the strides that Live/NCAA BB and 2K10 have made in this area it makes 2K8 practically unplayable.

The only real movement I see by my CPU players is when I'm on the post. I'll see the weakside wing player make a cut to the basket and I can hit him for the layup. A few other times I'll see a player cut to the basket as well but that's about it. As ehh said, this is where the game feels outdated to the others.

I had a chuckle last night when I realized the players were lined up below the blocks as free throws were being administered.
