I used the custom CPU playbooks for two games and it's definitely as good as advertised. The stagnant, boring and predictable CPU offense is completely gone.
In the first game I used the post-heavy playbook for my UConn game against G'Town (they should probably use the perimeter playbook but I wanted to see how involved Monroe would get using the post one) and Sims and Monroe each had decent games. Maybe it was the play calling that randomly called more plays for Sims (my rotations are a little screwed up for G'Town I guess as well, Sims played a lot) and he ended up with a nice game with 11 points and 10 boards. Monroe had 8 points and 7 boards but also had more FGA's which is good but he only took 9 and I believe Sims took 6. It would be nice to see those bigs getting more FGA's, but I'm sure their individual tendencies play a role as well.
As for the rest of G'Town, their perimeter game was horrible. As a team they shot 29% and were 0-18 from downtown, gotta love the 2K8 'ice cold' games you get from time to time. I was up by as many as 19 and won by 13. On 15 minutes it was a brutal game, 51-38 final.
Koshi, do you find that teams shoot a poorer percentage on jumpshots when using the post-heavy playbook? I don't know if this is an isolated incident or what, obviously can't tell after one game.
My second game was at home against Providence, giving them the perimeter playbook. I got off to a huge start, up 17-4 and was really rolling. Then PC caught fire from deep, making up for the G'Town game perhaps! They hit three straight triples to to make it a four point game but I regained control and took a double digit lead into the locker room.
I was holding a 9-12 point advantage for the first part of the second half but then PC put together a helluva run and eventually took a one point lead with under 2:00 to go. I attacked the rim and hit four FT's with my guards, but PC hit a three and a lay up to go up one with about a minute left. I called the PG-C pick and roll play on the wing and hit Thabeet on the roll for a huge two handed dunk that shook the screen (love that feature) because it game me a one point lead. After a stop I had the ball with :40 left so I was going to need to take one more shot. PC played great D and I forced up a 15 footer with Price that was off the mark but Thabeet grabbed the offensive board and slammed home another two handed dunk. PC rushed down and got the ball to Jeff Xavier (who had 21 points and was 5-8 from three) but his triple at the buzzer hit the front rim.
PC hit 7/15 three's and shot 46% for the game, good stuff. Jeff Xavier was definitely their go-to guy and they made it a point to find him frequently.
It was definitely one of the best games I've had in a long time in 2K8. So long story short, the perimeter playbook worked great and the post one was so-so. Hopefully the next time I use it I'll see some better results. But even using the post playbook, the CPU's offense was much more crisp now that the craptacular plays have been weeded out.
