LeBron James, in one fell swoop, has dramatically changed the course of NBA history for the next generation.
Had he signed with Chicago or the Knicks or remained with the Cavaliers, the NBA almost certainly would have entered a golden age, similar to the 1980s, where there would have been three or four truly great teams led by superstars in their primes competing for all the marbles every spring. It would have been basketball heaven.

Terrible article, I stop reading when I read all those if statements."IF kobe didnt have..., IF lebron was on..." You can use that to discredit anyone to make your point sound valid. And if Jordan kept playing baseball he would have just 3 rings and would not be considered the goat. You see how I just did that.

What bothers me about this, is that this is gonna or probably has ticked off the owners so much that there is no way they don't have a lockout now. With the moves that were made they are gonna push for that hardcap and get it and all the great moves that the OKC's and Chicago's of the world are gonna basically go down the toilet after one year.

The NBA will never enter another "golden age."

We're in the internet age. In the 80s, nobody knew that Magic Johnson was giving girls HIV and quite probably contributed to the early deaths of several people. Nobody knew Michael Jordan was quite possibly the biggest douche to ever walk the earth.

Now we know that Delonte West banged Lebron's mom.

I don't think that really affects a 'golden age' all that much. The NFL is in a golden age and the off-the-field stuff is embarrassing with dozens of players.

The NFL isn't anywhere close to the NBA when it comes to individual players.

Nobody really knows anything about NFL players.

If he's really capable of doing all this by himself then I guess that he really is "bigger than the league".

Yup, if the internet was as omnipresent as it is now back when Jordan was playing, all these guys who still idolize him years after he played would be giving him the Kobe treatment.

Well, we know these things now. Are they any less reverred as basketball players? Would MJ have lost any endorsements if his dirty secrets came out? Maybe a few. But he would still be 'must see TV'.

But I still don't think this is a bad thing. The Heat are now 'must see TV' more than any other team since MJ retired...and potentially even bigger than him. How is it bad for the NBA?

It's not so much endorsements but just how the players are revered. I think that's what makes the 80s the "golden era."

In today's world a player could never be as popular as guys like Jordan, Bird, and Magic were.

I don't think it's a bad thing. Personally I'm excited to see it.

I just don't buy that if Lebron went to New York or Chicago it would have turned the NBA back to the 80s. I think a lot of the media backlash comes from the fact that three of the four teams in the hunt for Lebron who lost out were based in the #1 and #3 media markets in the country.

I think it's more that it eliminated what would have been the best Eastern Conference rivalry in over a decade. If LeBron went to Chicago or NY it'd instantly become the best EC rivalry since Knicks/Heat.

Really the only thing that needs to be said in this thread.

This team is going to sell out every arena they play in this year and is bringing the fringe fan back to the NBA. Best thing to happen to the league since Jordan.
                        Good job! Good effort!

I strongly disagree with that. Every former/casual NBA fan I know is disgusted by the move and has a typical response of, "that's why the NBA sucks".

Time will tell with the ratings.

Disgusted by FREE agents deciding to take less money in the primes of their careers to try and start a dynasty? It's never really happened to this extent before so how could anybody say "that's why the NBA sucks".

The people who are disgusted are either in Cleveland or just pissed they ended up with the free agent left overs. But those same people will all be watching hoping to see this team fail.

At my job there were at least 6 of my co-workers who I have never heard speak about any sport having a heated discussion about Lebron. This is good for the league.

Casual fans don't care about people taking less money. They want to see good games. Competition needs for the best players to play opposite each other, not beside each other. And for the last time, noone is mad that he didn't come to their team. Knicks fans are over it. We're just happy we're going in the right direction. And we have the Yankees. Bulls fans don't care because their team is better off without him. People are mad because the way he did it, not what he did.
