to be honest, no. his legacy is that of a small forward. his greatest effect was as a small forward. he is known as a small forward. he may have played the 4 spot, but he is known primarily as a 3.

I just can't say Pau is better than Dirk, because I would wager a large sum of money that Pau wouldn't be able to take an average team further than Dirk could-- in terms of regular season wins and also playoff wins.

It all depends on the situation, but if I had one wing superstar, depending on that guy's style of play, I would probably rather have Pau.

lol, yes he could. A dominant low block player takes teams farther than a perimeter player. Besides, these fantasy "if" scenarios are pointless. You don't know how it would play out, you're not a prophet. A lot of Dallas' problems in the playoffs (besides their overall choking) was having a low post presence that can score/defend/rebound. Perimeter oriented teams just don't win championships.

I think the mistake a lot of you guys make is comparing a young Pau Gasol, fresh from Europe, and using that as your example as "har har I told you so". What if we point to Jordan's first 7 years and say "he couldn't lead the Bulls to the promised land".

We've already been through this anyway. What was Memphis before Pau Gasol? What have they been after he got traded? Yea, they had their best years with him, soft and all at the time. The team's first round exits were a funtion of the roster they had and the conference they played in. Gasol is the one that even took them that far in the first place. Dallas has had a much better roster, in terms of talent, over the years. Dirk has played with both Nash and Kidd, amongst other quality players. Gasol did not have anybody even close to that before coming to LA, so these imaginary scenarios are pretty weak. I would wager that none of us really know how it would play out, but general wisdom points that an All-Star low block player is a better building block.

If we went through every teams current rosters. And had the choice between them I would love to see your list.

Heat - Pau
Orlando - Pau
Knicks - Dirk
Hornets - Pau/Dirk (tough one in my opinion)
Celtics - Dirk
Blazers - Dirk
Nets - Dirk
Wolves - Dirk
Kings - Dirk
Thunder - Pau
Jazz - Dirk
Bobcats - Pau

The Suns would take either. Pau is a better rebounder but Dirk is the best PnR partner for Nash not named Amare.

Yea thats why I had problem when putting him with CP3. They could pick and roll all day. I don't know if the Suns could have a player like Pau. Amare never posted up in that offense (not really never..more like once in a while). But your right Pau might be the better fit.

You just proved my point anyway, what were they without him?

I'm sure things would have been different if Pau was playing with guys like Nash, Kidd, Terry etc. Dallas has had a talented roster for several years now.
