On top of the franchise tags guy(on average) stay in their primes longer in basketball than they do in football. So clearly they have more prime time to play out their contracts.

I would hate a franchise tag in basketball and have no problem with FA's using whatever methods at their disposal to get the deal and/or go to the teams they want. If you have played out your contract it is your giving right to whore yourself out if you so choose. Matter fact I would like athlete's to stop comparing their situations to slavery and compare it more to what it is closer to prostitution.

I already dug into that possiblity. Hell we are techincally owned by the league. We deserve a "Gasol" like deal.

Either way I would be nice if we could package West and Okafor that would give us the space to offer Superman a max contract. Him couple with Paul and your talking about battling maybe the Lakers and Dallas for the #1 spot next year. Especially giving Paul another year to recover because he clearly was playing @ about 90% all year.

Also, the difference is that Dwight has not said that he is leaving, unlike Melo. While I think he is a good guy, he is not going to stay jst because of that. However, I think there is a good chance that if he decides to leave, he discreetly lets Otis know before next years deadline so the Magic can make a move.
Early on Melo denied wanting to be traded it wasn't until the season got start and the situation dragged on that Melo started voicing his opinion about being traded.

My point was it's best to just get good value for him if he can't give a commitment to stay and instead wants to test the market. This way you can acquire draft picks, young players and/or expiring contracts to help the cap flexibility of the team (assuming the next CBA still includes this) and not be stuck in franchise hell like the Cavs and Raptors are currently experiencing.
          This.

As hard as it must be to lose a superstar(hopefully my Hornets won't have this happen) in cases like this it's better to be proactive than reactive.

You say this as if a Tagging someone is a BAD thing. It's only bad when you got teams who tag the same player over and over with and then it becomes ridiculous.

If the NBA gets it, then I'd only allow one use of it on a player and not allow them to do what some teams in the NFL do to it, which is constantly tag the same player with it year after year.

Anyway, if they want to let Duhwight walk, I'll be glad to move Brook to PF and have Duhwight at C when we get to BK and I'm sure The Russian would love that as well.

If you want a player under contract for 6,7,or 8years sign him that long, but giving the teams the option to extend a player obligation to them past the sign contract to me is wrong.

But with Deron in Utah, that was WAY too proactive, at least for Dwight's situation. I understand a decent argument can be made to try to get two or three first round picks and a prospect or two for him, but unless he makes it known that he will not resign, I can support rolling the dice. He is better than Deron and Melo IMHO, especially with his developing post game. He likes Orlando and I am not going to say he will stay but I put it around 40-50% chance, and for me, that is enough to take the risk on someone who can change the game on both ends of the floor like Dwight can.

Oh absolutely. There has to be some balance, but once a FO has a strong idea that they either don't want to or can't resign a player it's better to be proactive.

Yeah, i agree. But as long as the probability of getting Dwight back stays around the 40% range, I think we try to resign. Of course if that changes, then we have to make a move and be proactive.

In Dwight's defense, he gets mugged all the time but doesn't show it as much just because he's so big and strong. Refs get trigger happy with him too.
