Re: Could Dwight Be Playing Somewhere Else Next Season?

The Orlando Magic would like to seriously engage the Bulls in trade talks for Dwight Howard, but the All-Star center's apparent reluctance to make a long-term commitment to Chicago has all but killed the discussions, league sources told CBSSports.com.

The feeling among rival executives remains that the Magic seem intent on rolling the dice and keeping Howard for the rest of the season, hoping a long playoff run, emotional ties to Orlando and an extra year and $29 million they could offer would persuade him to stay beyond this season. But the move would be highly risky, given that Howard has refused to publicly commit to the Magic -- a stance that sources view as a strong sign that he'd leave as a free agent if he isn't traded.

"He's telling everyone he's leaving," one league source said Sunday.

Magic executives are said to be unimpressed with the assets Howard's three preferred teams could provide in a trade, prompting them to engage in a calculated campaign to expand the field of potential suitors beyond the Nets, Mavericks and Lakers. But the team that can make the strongest case for Orlando to depart from its risky strategy of holding onto Howard are the Bulls, who could offer 7-footer Omer Asik, Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu, sources said. The Bulls also could offer a valuable first-round pick from Charlotte -- top-14 protected in this year's draft but but unprotected by 2016.

Such a scenario has gained no traction since Chicago is "not on his list," a person familiar with the situation said of Howard. Without assurances from Howard or his camp that he'd be willing to sign long-term with the Bulls, Chicago executives have exhibited no appetite for trade talks with the Magic. The two teams have spoken, but there's "no type of serious discussions" going on, a person familiar with the situation said.

The Bulls (34-9) also have the best record in the league and are "built for long-term success," said one person familiar with their strategy, making a trade for Howard a non-starter without his blessing. Bulls officials do, according to sources, privately have concerns about whether they have enough to get past Miami in a playoff series, but are content to take a shot at it with the group they have.

Efforts by Orlando to entice other teams that are willing to trade for Howard without a long-term commitment have been seriously hampered by the realization that such a team would only have Howard for about 25 games after Thursday's trade deadline -- not enough time to win him over to a city and team not currently on his list.

Magic CEO Alex Martins, who is spearheading the biggest personnel decision for Orlando since Shaquille O'Neal left as a free agent in 1996, told the Orlando Sentinel Sunday that the team has yet to make a decision on whether to trade him or not by Thursday's 3 p.m. ET deadline.

"We're not at the point where we're ready to answer that question yet," Martins said. "Sometime in the next four days we will be, but we're not at the point where we're ready to answer that question yet."

He don't care about winning, that's nothing new.

And I don't mean it in the sense of he doesn't care if his team wins or loses, but it's obvious that it's not really his biggest priority.

One place I wish he would consider(although I'm not sure if the interest would be mutual)would be San Antonio. Sign there in the offseason as a FA, get to play with the best coach in the league and one of the best PGs as well, not to mention it'd be a smooth transition for the Spurs going from the Duncan Era into the Howard Era.

Great team, great coach, great front office, great commitment to winning.

And he would never even consider them.

Blah, Chicago is always the front runner in these blockbuster trades by the media. I still don't see how a combination of what the Bulls offer triumphs Bynum. We'll see, I doubt Orlando contacted Chicago anyway.

I'm still saying Orlando doesn't move him and loses him in FA.

I don't know Alt. The Bulls could offer a sweet deal to the Magic. The only way I see the Lakers deal trumping the Bulls in terms of value is if they package Gasol along with Bynum in the deal. And the Lakers said they weren't going to do that.

BUT hypothetically, if LA offered Bynum and Gasol the Bulls would have to include a combination of Noah/Deng and that protected first round draft pick and other pieces to match that.

So we gonna act like the Magic isn't just using the Bulls for leverage? Four days away from the deadline they suddenly like the Bulls package the most and all that's stopping a deal is Dwight's blessing? If they move Deng in a trade for Dwight, then they damn well better get themselves a top flight perimeter defender somewhere soon or they still ain't winning ****.

I hope we aren't the front runner for anything regarding Dwight Howard.

Mainly because we would take two steps back to get him. Also, his ego is something that I don't want in our locker room.

Re: Could Dwight Be Playing Somewhere Else Next Season?

The Bulls aren't starting anything with this. Like King said, it's either the Magic trying to gain some leverage or the media needs to add some fuel to the Howard situation.

This is such a love/hate deal for me. Love this deal because pairing Howard with Rose gives the Bulls so much firepower in terms of talent. Yes, they loose some of their depth BUT with the addition of Howard your basically invincible at two positions that the Miami Heat are weak at and that's point guard and center. I'd take my chances to weaken my strengths in order to strengthen points on the team that the Heat are weak at. LeBron can't lock down both Rose and Howard.

Now the hate of this deal comes to the fact that Howard does not want to be here. And if he's adamant about it, then take your *** to where you want to go. Even if Howard decided to change his mind and said he would sign a long term deal with the Bulls, I'd still feel funny about it. There is just too much uncertainty with that kid and despite the fact that he is the best center in the league right now the Bulls cannot take that chance to mess with chemistry for the long run.

I know that but I was saying that because

The Bulls could offer a sweet deal to the Magic.
If the Magic were to call the Bulls up, then there's really no reason for the Bulls to give them a sweet deal lol.

So where does Dwight want to play? Serious question. If I remember, he said that he wouldn't sign a long term deal in L.A., Golden State, or Houston. He doesn't want to stay with the Magic, no matter how many ways he tries to spin it towards staying. At this point I don't think Dwight knows where Dwight wants to play.

He wants to play with where ever Deron is going to be at. That's been obvious since before the season even started.
