There's also an out clause if the lockout ends.

Probably just going over there to stay in playing shape. I have no problem with that.

He can stay in shape just fine here in the USA. And he has plenty of money. No point to go there, but whatever ya want, Deron.

A little bit shocked it's legit... I mean, I know the players threw around the notion pretty freely throughout the season, but for it to happen a few days into the lockout, and the first guy doing this is a big name, it's a little stunning to me.

          Wow.

Maybe he's trying to piss of Billy Hunter

I'm shocked to be honest. Is this dude about the money? WTF is this proving?

For his sake, I hope he stays healthy.

But this is not a good look IMO.

Avery Johnson must be climbing a wall right now.

What if he sees this lockout as lasting a lot longer than we may be thinking? He has a clause to come back if the lock out ends so it seems he's tied up all necessary avenues to secure his NBA career. But if, say, the lockout were to completely eliminate the upcoming season, would this be a bad move? What if it killed 2 seasons?

I agree, the out clause is pretty much a door saying hey we all acknowledge this is a temporary thing, but we can still both benefit so lets do this.

Truthfully, if he can stay healthy, then im all for it. I worry about that aspect, but there's no reason to knock guys if they can play elsewhere and keep their bodies intact.

                That risk though, man...

Honestly it'd be pretty sick to see, aside from the obvious that I'd be pretty upset once guys started getting banged up. Not to mention unneccessary mileage on top of that.

Irrelevant that most pro athletes smoke, and yes the bigger issue is that he seems to be dumb enough to get caught with it like it doesn't matter at all.

Exactly, once the lockout ends he's coming right back.

He should be set for life money wise. Even if he isn't set for life, he should be damn close. So even if he suffers a career ending injury he'd probably be fine financially.

Staying in game shape is much different than just being "in shape". Going overseas to play in a pro league is a lot better than staying here and just playing pickup ball. If he stays here he'd get nowhere near the run he'd get overseas.

There are several benefits of going overseas. He gets paid again, he stays in relative game shape and possibly could score some more endorsement deals while there.

Let's not act as if he's gonna be playing in a zillion games or anything. I'm sure his advisers/agent are smart enough to know how much additional mileage he's gonna put on his body. I'm sure they're not going into this thing blindly.

Zaza will join Williams on the club as well.

I also want to add to the benefits of Deron's move... he gets to have more money for playing ball. We worry about injuries and such, that doesn't mean he does. Maybe he just wants to play. The level of comp is pretty good, the compensation is great, and you get to spend a good amount of time in another part of the world. I wouldn't expect every player to want to do this but looking from their perspective, I can't see why it'd be bad that any would.

I also see this opening the door for other players and, more importantly, opening a change in the landscape of the NBA going forward. I can see some players (not on Deron's level) not coming back, this being a more attractive offer than college for high schoolers and even increasing the talent level of "fringe" players that decide to head overseas rather than testing the draft waters. The NBA is still king but they're throwing around tons of money overseas, and a move like this muddying the water a bit will make the option more acceptable.

All of this, with the addition of Owners feeling heat from the players to get the CBA knocked out to stop players from getting hurt and such over-seas. They want the players locked out, but I don't think they want them locked in to overseas teams while both sides play lets make a deal. If a handful more of relevant players make moves close to this, owners will definitely lose some leverage. Yes, the players want to make their 10+ million a year in the NBA while competing at the highest level, but if playing basketball and making money still rank atop some of these guys' agenda, there will be more Deron Williams. Whether or not they get as good of a deal as Deron got (hearing lower 7 figures, still reasonably high for that league I imagine, plus an opt out clause meaning he will not miss a single game of NBA action once the lockout passes) remains to be seen. He's the first of potentially many.

The pressure gets thrown back on the owners to work on finding a deal. That pressure will multiply 100 fold if anyone gets a serious injury.

I'm also confident there will be a large insurance policy taken out if he were to suffer a career ending injury. He'll have his bases covered.

Sounds like Tyson means business. I mean I hope Mark Cuban has the money to flash at him. In my opinion, he is the first person they have to re-sign if they want to repeat. He is coming off his best season as a pro. The injuries can be thrown out the window.

I heard Turkey is trying to get Kobe Bryant to come play as well. If they get him, I'm willing to bet you that's not going to be it. I'm guessing that there will be more players. And I'm not just talking about the average players. I'm talking about some all-star guys. If LeBron jumps ship, call it a wrap. The NBA(unofficially) will be moving from North America to Europe/Asia.

I can see the owners loosing a lot of leverage if more players play overseas.
