I don't know if it was a bluff. You have to remember not every owner is in favor of a hard cap. A hard cap will really hurt the big market teams. As long as the Lakers are a championship caliber team the Busses can charge pretty much whatever they want for tickets.

Re: CBA/Lockout Discussion Thread
The overseas option can be used as huge leverage for the players. However, I don't think the right players will do this to cause a stir among the owners. And it has to be enough players need to do it for it to be effective.
It's either that or decertify as a union and file an anti-trust lawsuit against the league like the NFL did. However, the NBAPA will know better to file with the 8th district court. They'll probably file with a more liberal 9th district court where they'll probably get a favorable ruling. I highly doubt that the player will go that route BUT you never know.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Re: CBA/Lockout Discussion Thread
I can guarantee you, that even if EVERY star player goes overseas, the owners wouldn cave.
European basketball has become drastically better within the last 5 years but the sport still is second to soccer by a wide margin (even in turkey...maybe Greece as the only exception) which doesn't allow them to give NBA-contracts to NBA players.
At least not on a regular basis...from what I have seen, financial stability is a lot bigger factor here.
I can clearly see some teams spending big money on some starplayers...but not for more then 1 year.
And I am pretty sure the owners know that...while I highly doubt the players do.Soccer: Werder Bremen, FC Barcelona,
NBA: Celtics, Bulls, Supersonics
NHL: Flames
NFL: Steelers

Well, as I stated before. The Euro is much more valuable than the US dollar. So their money would probably stretch out better than the money here.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Re: CBA/Lockout Discussion Thread
I'll only comment on this once and put it nicely. Haven't read through the thread so it's probably been said already,if not multiple times but if it has been I'm in agreement.
I saw a TV ad for the clearinghouse thingy. Basically winning the lotto right?
They said $5000 a week.
That comes out to $260,000 a year.
The last guy on the bench of a NBA team that doesn't even play or for about 2 minutes per game with something like a 1.2 PPG average gets $480,000 a year (at least according to NBA 2K) for basically showing up and sitting on the bench. There's people that save lives and get paid $480,000 less for it,which would be $0.
They claimed, what? 24/30 teams losing money?
This is not in the players favor and I don't expect this to go well for them.
If that many teams are losing money then the owners won't care how long this goes on for. Everything will be cut by at least half or we're going to have a 6 team league.Comment

Re: CBA/Lockout Discussion Thread
I think that players get more leverage by having multiple stars go overseas ... they wouldnt even need salaries to match their current earnings (see Williams), just their inssurance covered ... the incomes through endorsements will rain even when soccer is the king sport on those regions ... earnings might not be to their current extend but to an important level as it would be a "none vs whatever they get offered" approach.
None, players nor owners see this as a multiyear lockout and while the millionare players would not ever outlast the multibillionare owners, they gain a lot of leverage by playing overseas, as no bussiness can harmlessly survive beyond a losing season ... nor would the owners ever be able to fully exploit those overseas markets/endorsements that get "touched" while the players play overseas.
My bet is that the more players that go overseas the better the odds of an arrangement by end of this year or by begining of the next ... hopefully I am wrong and this is settle before.Comment

Re: CBA/Lockout Discussion Thread
Listened to a bit of a discussion on this topic tonight. It's a basic belief by a number of people that the European market has LIMITED money to bring players over. So it won't be a mass exodus because it's out of the realm of financial possibility. And guys will have second thoughts and I believe it will become more of a ploy to go overseas than a reality. I stand by my personal belief that this will not go well for the players union...
If football ends their lockout (which they probably will very soon) and the NHL continues it's spiral toward reaching new fans these things won't help the NBA.STEELERS INDIANS CELTICS
