The Maloof family that owns the Sacramento Kings has reached an agreement to sell the controlling interest in the franchise to a Seattle group intent on moving it in time for next season.

Sigh, no trolling or anything but I will miss those cowbells. That place was always electric when the purple smurfles were in town.

Wojo says BOG approval of relocation to Seattle is a formality.

I'm happy my Sonics are returning, but having been in Kings fans shoes, I feel terrible for them.

Happy for Seattle fans, sorry for Kings fans for losing their team.

Has anyone heard if their relocating next year or later?

I was getting confused and thought that Hansen was paying $525 for just 65% of the team. Clarification:

                Adrian Wojnarowski ‏@WojYahooNBA
The $525 million price is a "valuation" on the total franchise. For 65 percent, Seattle group would pay approximately $340 million.

Sadly, it's the NBA economic model that is broken. I think the group KJ has put together is presenting to the BOG, not necessarily to save the current iteration of the Kings, but to sell themselves for future relocation. If Ellison is involved, as was recently rumored, that's enticing to the NBA.

Surprisingly, there are a few teams without arena deals within the next five years that would be in the same situation the Kings are in now and the Sonics were in 2008. IF the Kings move to Seattle, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see someone else (Indiana, Milwaukee, ?) in Sacramento in the next 4-8 years.

Sucks for Kings fans, no fan base should have to go through this.

Happy for Sonics fans getting their team back though.

Hey man, keep your head up, just like the Seattle fans like me who believed they can get a team. I think you'll get a new Kings team. I actually do believe that but since Sterns Successor could be that other old man who announces names in the 2nd round in the NBA Draft. So I'm scared that a team like Milwaukee or Indiana or any more low market team could move after long history in the league. But hopefully with Stern going away later, first thing you guys do is yell to get a new team to the new commish.

I live in downtown sacramento and can really say that a new arena here would have helped us a lot. Im originally from the bay area and i am a warriors fan but since moving to sac i have learned to cheer for the kings, they have a great fan base, extremely loyal and deserve the kings just as much as the seattle deserves the sonics. I dont know why, i know im a warriors fan but the kings leaving makes me never want to give a single cent to the nba ever again. I can honestly say i think im done with basketball, maybe when david stern is done but for now i cant watch. There is honestly no hope for small market teams, all the power lies in the hand of about 5 teams and looks as though thats not changing anytime soon. So for now, goodbye nba

A pity. Kings are no more. So begins the petitions, the assemblies, the lobbying. But there's no stopping it now.

My own connection makes it especially poignant. Cuz this could've been New Orleans.
