    Re: 2014 Draft Discussion

Wallace also came into the league as a small forward, so while he already had a nose for the ball as far as rebounds go he still took a lot of time to get bigger/stronger, learn how to play against bigs, and develop nearly perfect timing to become the undersized rim protector he was.

Idk if Young can develop into that or not, but even if he doesn't have the rebounding tenacity he could still become a similar player.. A poor-mans Ben Wallace, or slightly better Haslem.. Something in between those two maybe.

Or he might take a completely different path and be a more traditional power forward.. I don't believe his ceiling is high, but he could be a perfect complimentary piece for a contending team.

      Just from his Wiki

Wallace first played college basketball on the junior college level at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland for two years. There, staples of Wallace's defensive prowess were shown as he averaged 17.0 rebounds and 6.9 blocks per game. He then transferred to Virginia Union, a Division II school, where he studied criminal justice. Wallace averaged 13.4 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game as a member of the Virginia Union Panthers, whom he led to the Division II Final Four and a 28–3 record.[1] As a senior, Wallace was named to the First-Team All CIAA and was selected as a First Team All-American (Div. II) by the NABC.
17 rebounds and 7 blocks tells me he played against a bunch of scrubs lol. I don't think the competition is there in DII either. If he was a SF in DII, then he'd just be bigger and more athletic than his match up. Impressive stats nonetheless.

      Young also has some accolades...

Young was a five-star recruit out of Providence School in Jacksonville, Florida.[1] He was named a McDonald's All American.[2] Young has attended the University of Florida for all four seasons. As a junior and senior he was the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year.[3][4] As a senior, he won the Pete Newell Big Man Award.[5]
      +
      Second team All-SEC (2014)
SEC Defensive Player of the Year (2014)
      Third team Academic All-American (2014)

...a 3.3 from UF gets you all-American and SEC scholar athlete of the year now?

At the very least you'll get a big body with high energy and great character.

Been agreeing with everything you've said, but Wallace didn't come into the league as a small forward. It was just yet another case of horrible drafting by the Washington front office. I believe they had Webber, Howard, Rasheed and Ben Wallace all at the same time. They tried Howard at 3 more than any of them, but neither Sheed or Webber really wanted to play center (or should've). I don't think Ben got a real fair shot, but also don't know if he should've considering the comp and all of their respective levels of talent/experience at the time.

I really want Randle/Smart. If not hopefully we can trade the pick go back a few slots. Not normally in the lottery so I'm very ****ing nervous.

Well I didn't mean he came out of college as a small forward, but more so once he was drafted that's what he had to adjust to. I honestly don't remember much of him from Washington, I don't remember him having much of a role there.. I was referring more to Orlando as far as trying to use him outside more, which he wasn't a great fit there either. If Howard was used at the 3 more so than Wallace that's my bad.

But my overall point was that Wallace didn't come into to league NBA-ready to handle defending NBA centers. It was something he developed, so saying someone like Young couldn't do the same isn't fair at this point in time. Though it's not something I expect, not many undersized big men can develop that defensive ability at the rim. They do however usually become pretty good rebounders, maybe because they get a better low center of gravity boxing out the lanky-legged centers. Not that he'll be a great rebounder, just babbling and thinking aloud at this point lol.

              Re: 2014 Draft Discussion

OJ was on point with his McDermott stuff a few pages back. A lot of people in Charlotte are afraid of repeating the Adam Morrison fiasco, but McDermott is an incredibly efficient player as opposed to Morrison who really was not.

I would be all for taking Hairston at #24. I don't think we need to find a backup PG in the draft either, I think we can find one in free agency that can do a decent job. Ramon Sessions has talked about wanting to come back to Charlotte, in particular.

As far as #1 goes, I would take Embiid no questions asked. He only started playing ball 3 or 4 years ago, has incredible athleticism to go along with size and shows great improvement over time. If he's healthy I go with him.

Either Parker or Embiid are going to make the Cavaliers core very, very dangerous for the next few years.

Still can't play a lick of defense. I didn't watch the video, but workouts are made for you to look good. I think he is going to struggle against 3s in the NBA.
Edit: Just watched the video. He looked good but once again it was a workout hype video. Of course the players are going to look good. Just like a mixtape.

I don't think he'll ever be a good starter but I think he'll be a solid guy off the bench to plug into games for some scoring help.

Again, there aren't many guys who play defense anyway. Hopefully being young, he re-learns defense.

These workout videos are purely hype, clearly. However you can see that Parker is not a 4 because his handle is tight and his ball skills are that of a guard. That was my point, that he is a wing player not a 4 and in the video you can see that he's slimmed down and definitely tightened up his perimeter ball skills.

Wiggins could be a great player someday, but I'm not sure if I want the #1 player in the draft be a guy who has to play off the ball to be effective on offense.

Either way, Embiid is still, by far, my choice over Wiggins and Parker.

I like Parker, but as a Cavs fan I'm not sure of I want another bad perimeter defender. Kyrie is terrible at defense and dion isn't much better. While I agree tht Parker is a great offensive prospect, defense still wins championships.
