Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
Isn't carving out a special rule so that it was easier for the team to retain Bird an indication of wanting to help out the Celtics?
I don't know the circumstances around how the rule was created but it sounds like a loophole in the salary cap to help a certain team keep a certain player.Comment

Bird Rights were more about the future of the league and trying to encourage players NOT to leave their teams for greener pastures.Comment

That was the official explanation for the "Qualifying veteran free agents" rule....but everyone knows the reason they are referred to as the "Larry Bird Rights"Comment

Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
Yea it was put into place to help the small market teams like Milwaukee, Cleveland, etc. to be able to give their UFAs more money in hopes that they would take the extra money and stay instead of leaving for a Boston, LAL, or NYK.Comment

Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
Soooooo I guess nobody cares about this then?
The Cavaliers are closing in on a deal to sign veteran swingman Richard Jefferson, who previously had committed to joining the Mavericks, sources said.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are closing in on a deal to sign veteran swingman Richard Jefferson, according to league sources.
Sources said Jefferson, who committed to re-sign with the Dallas Mavericks earlier this month, changed his mind in recent days and is finalizing a one-year veteran minimum deal with the Cavaliers instead.
The move will add some wing depth for Cleveland, which could potentially strengthen the Cavaliers' bargaining position as they continue to haggle with the unsigned J.R. Smith, who opted out of the final season of his existing contract (valued at $6.4 million) to become a free agent July 1.
Jefferson's return to Dallas was initially considered such a formality that the 35-year-old joined owner Mark Cuban and starting small forward Chandler Parsons at a July 3 celebration of the Mavs' ill-fated verbal agreement with marquee free agent DeAndre Jordan.
But Jefferson's free agency has since played out in a similar fashion to Jordan's, with a U-turn on his intention to sign with Dallas to return to the Eastern Conference with the title-chasing Cavs.Comment

Per ProBasketballTalk
Mavs’ owner Mark Cuban was quick to say “don’t confuse this with what Jordan did.”
Mavs owner Mark Cuban tells ESPN that team was NOT blindsided by Richard Jefferson's U-turn a la DeAndre Jordan, saying RJ called him first

Re: 2015 Offseason Thread
That's all well and good, but there were dudes bitching about the fact that he changed his mind at all. Even if DeAndre had called Cuban, all the other FA bigs were off the board, so a phone call wasn't gonna change ****. Certainly not in the public eye anyway. All I'm saying is I haven't seen any 'end the moratorium' venom today around here or Twitter or Facebook or anywhere else sports is discussed.Comment

For every team.
Not an exception that was added because of one player and one franchise.
