I've been saying this for years. It's absurd that they still do things this way. The NFL has it right with their schedule the way free agency starts and you know exactly where the holes on your team are based on what you lost, what you might have gained and no longer have a pressing need for.

It's so *** backwards of the NBA to draft players and then mess around and lose 2 or 3 guys that you were confident you could keep or a trade made itself available that you had to pull the trigger on that affected the depth you addressed in the draft. You would think all the smart guys they got in that office could figure this out.

      Re: NBA Off Topic Thread

There are a few pros to both.

As it currently works I think it’s more beneficial for undrafted free agents to be signed as free agents. Also gives you a better indication of how much cap you actually have left. For example if you used up all your cap but whatever it was for your 14th pick but there was a trade opportunity for you to move up to 3rd pick but now you don’t have the cap space to make that trade.

Drafting a payer first leaves you with a cap hold. So you know how much space he is eating from free agency or how much outgoing money is he with a trade.

Also makes sense for free agents to know what they are signing to.

Also saves teams from building their roster with the intention of drafting a player and that player goes two picks ahead of them. Doesn’t matter much in the late rounds, but if you’re picking 5th and plan on drafting your SF of the future and spent hundreds of millions to fill every spot but that and he ends up going 3rd, you’re kinda ****ed. You have to draft a position you maybe don’t need, or trade back. But in that example if you trade back and it becomes 5-6m less in terms of what you’re paying the rookie that would have been 5-6m more you could have spent on free agency.

I think there is almost too much player movement, too small of rosters, and too much impact from each player in basketball for this to ever reverse order. You head into the NFL draft knowing you need a safety well you’ve got 7 rounds to draft one. In basketball it’s not as simple. You’ve got two shots if you own both picks, but in many NBA drafts you’re lucky to get 5-10 guys who even contribute in their first couple seasons.

Bird rights also plays a role in all this. And cap holds too. In an Austin Reaves example his cap hold is like 2mil, but his new deal will start around 12m. If the draft was after free agency you’d have to leave x amount of dollars open to sign your pick and that’s 10 million less in space you’d have a draft night.

Players with bird rights who outplay their old contract is a better example. A guy like Kawhi who went from 2-3m to a max contract, Jokic too, or the situation with how Golden State built their team with Steph and Klay being cheaper for so long.. the cap hold for some of these guys is significantly lower than the first max deals they sign. But once they sign you’d be over the cap and technically not even able to sign your draft pick.

NBA could tweak rules where you have something like bird rights to sign over the cap the players you draft. But the salaries vary too much. Like 8m between the top pick and last first round/2nd round picks. Unless teams just purposely left holes in their roster to reserve open cap space we would basically never see a draft day trade. Technically they could make those trades before the draft, but no team is trading assets to move up for a pick if they don’t know the player won’t already be drafted either.

I forgot about Magic’s presser at the end of the season. That was some weird ****, lol

And hearing/seeing the players talk about their reaction when they found out Kobe died…just tough to see again.
