No lie, I had no idea that they had Flaming Hot Mountain Dew available until I was walking around Kroger the other day.

        Re: NBA Off Topic Thread

Bob Lanier passed away yesterday and I just wanted to stop in and drop that in here.

A few of my all-time favorite Dobber moments:

First, when he won the NBA's One-on-One Contest in 1972 and Bill Russell presented him with a duffel bag full of $15,000.

        <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/81kNqT6NRH0?start=40" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Second, the time he protected his teammate by fist-fighting a fan midway through a playoff game. No ejections, one arrest.

        <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rR-Fkhiod1M?start=40" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Bonus: this may have been why it took longer than expected to retire his jersey in Detroit.

So in other words sometimes it’s the same sometimes it isn’t? Neither is consistently true judging by those graphics..

Also whoever just assumed VORP would be the only advanced stat the people heavily basing their vote on those would look at to determine the “analytic” MVP is pretty lol to begin with.

Want to know which other seasons the leader in VORP also won MVP?

            2000, 99, 97, 96, 95, 92, 91, 88, 86, 85, 84, 81, 80, 77, 76, 74

The one thing I'll say about the analytics path is at least it's immune from media narrative/story as a motivator. LeBron def got screwed by that a few times. He probably deserved like 8 MVPs, but maybe not consecutively like that run has it lol.

Yeah, to simply go VORP = (all) analytics is simplistic, basketball still hasn't found its WAR-like stat that dominates the conversation.

New NBA championship hardware incoming this postseason. Not sure I’m feeling that LOB redesign.

                    Hopefully it never does either.

The EC Finals MVP should be the LeBron James trophy considering he's won more EC championships than anyone else in the modern era

The fact that they’re creating an MVP for that round is ****ing ridiculous. And it’s only a matter of time before they do it for every other round.

I don't mind it. I think it's a pretty low risk, high reward situation. I don't envision MVP trophies extending any further but in turn we get a chance to celebrate an individual who may have been critical in pushing a team to the precipice of the title cup.

Looking back to the last time my team was relevant, it would have been pretty cool to see Richard Hamilton walk away with some hardware for what he did to help push us past Indiana in 2004. And it probably would have actually affected his legacy to some degree, giving folks something to point to when acknowledging his impact on the Pistons (rather than folks always going to Ben, Chauncey, or everyone collectively).

Imagining who would have walked away with the conference MVP trophies for all the years gone by is kind of a fun topic to ponder.

Here's another one of my guys who probably would have benefitted from CMVPs: Isiah Thomas. Dude's probably walking out of that Bad Boys stretch with two CMVPs and one FMVP to his name. That'd look like a haul for a guy of his echelon.

The fact that before this Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan, the 3 guys that are the primary reasons there is even still an NBA in existence right now names aren't on ANY type of award in the league but you think the eastern conference finals trophy should be named after LeBron speaks volumes.

I don’t disagree with this, or disagree with pack because it just feels weird to me.. but ultimately being able to call it Magic and Bird as it truly represents the biggest cross conference rivalry the league has ever had does make it pretty fitting.

Don’t agree with King that Bron couldn’t in theory have his name on an award, but also don’t agree with cima that it needs to be a LeBron award when you have the whole Magic & Bird dynamic. LeBron & Magic would be super random in comparison.

To me the most random/weird thing is having players names tied to the teams conference finals awards. Especially named after guys who played large chunks of their careers before the NBA even had “conferences”.
