I think that the Pistons actually had wanted Walter Sharpe all along but didn't want to get him a guaranteed contract. So the team had traded down to the early part of the second round banking on the idea that teams between the 29 and 32 spots (Boston & Minnesota) were going to pass on him (they did), or at least haven't done research on him to consider drafting him. Heh, I've read at some sites that Sharpe wasn't even included in the NBA Draft Media guide. That's how much of "outside the box" pick this was, but that's mainly because of his medical situation that wasn't disclosed to anyone until about 5 months ago. Sharpe's off-court issues were basically kept in the dark from the public media and press.
As for Sharpe's game, well I have to admit I haven't seen him play all that much over at UAB or at Mississippi State early on so I can't comment on him. The general info I've read on Sharpe is that he has a good size and frame for a 3 man who is talented and can handle the ball as well as a 2-guard. He can contribute to the team as early as next season provided he makes the rotation.
Trent Plaisted and Deron Washington will both play in the Pistons summer league team and then go play basketball overseas, so these guys will be developed and ready to help the team within a few years after some of the Pistons older key players have been moved for one reason or another.
