i've cut the cord and was wondering about my options regarding hbo and showtime when it comes to live boxing. honestly, i don't need those channels for anything other than live boxing. if they offered the live boxing portion for say, $3 per month, i would consider it. (they offered the full channel for $10 extra a month on cable, if i remember correctly.)

I could possibly deal with non-live boxing if it was shown the next day. I have a couple of days of trial left on the Amazon-HBO deal and it does have Gamboa-Alvarado (3/11/17) and Lemieux-Stevens (3-11-17) archived, so I might have to check further into that.

So how do I relate to you a real prospect vs a fake prospect?

Imagine a 13-0 Keith Thurman - I had never heard of him, the only way I'd know if he's a prospect is if I either saw him or someone I respected said he's got a big future...

The other thought I had was to simply skip certain cards without the bigger names - and even then, where do I draw the line? The last show I did had what I would consider to be a real prospect in Cody Crowley. He trains now out of Vegas, sparred Mayweather even leading up to the Pac fight. He's 11-0 w/ 6kos. I can tell he's skilled and will get a shot probably 3 years from now. Is that enough? I don't know. the WBA cruiserweight title fight I did at the end of 2014 is certainly enough for wider appeal. It's just really hard to say. Maybe I go by the amount of twitter followers each boxer has? lol

i actually thought about the idea of calling to activate hbo when live boxing was showing when i had directv and calling to cancel it when it was over....lol.

Interesting comment on GGG's relatively low PPV numbers, which still project to be slightly over 150,000:

As for Golovkin, this is a perfect study in how you can be a star without being a PPV draw. He sells out arenas both in Europe and North America, several of his HBO fights have averaged in excess of one million viewers, but does that translate to fans wanting to pay to watch him on TV? Nope, not really.

Better news for GGG-the live gate was at $3.7 million, bigger than the $2 million for the Lemiuex fight.

I definitely think that the ppv model for any form of entertainment is definitely dying.

i agree...the trend is going towards cord cutting and live streaming so ppv may have to change quite a bit as well, if it endures at all.

The issue with streaming is that it's still a media production that cost $. This relates back to my question. Like I can get media sponsorship to pay for that, but there still needs to be some form of revenue generation, otherwise, why bother.

If everyone were to stream, and the end of cable becomes a reality - either the steaming model will be drastically different and cost comparable to cable OR the quality of productions diminish in-line with the exponential decrease in revenue.

Why? Promoters can just charge for the live stream the same way they do for PPV.

It's an easy sell, as almost everyone is accustomed to paying for streaming through Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO Go, NFL Sunday Ticket, NBA League Pass on mobile/computers, etc.

Same show, different delivery method, same price.

i see what you mean, but let's face it....hardly any recent boxing cards have been worth $60. they just aren't what they used to be.

True. The Golovkin-Jacobs card last Saturday night was one of the few worth $55. Three of the four fights were very entertaining, including the co-main and the main.

i was going to but it's hard to be interested in a fight between an elite boxer vs. someone who has not even had a professional boxing match yet. it wreaks of shenanigans. we are not buying what floyd is selling this time. an extremely easy victory to go 50-0. (albeit at $100 or more on ppv) without even watching the fight, i can tell you exactly what is going to happen. floyd will carefully outbox conor very easily and stay out of harm's way the entire fight...most likely running as well in order to secure the lopsided win. yes, conor has power, age, height, southpaw and a puncher's chance but all of that can't make up for his lack of experience in a boxing ring.

Also the fact that Conor couldn't even really outbox Nate Diaz. It is a complete joke that both fighters are doing. They really don't hate each other. It is all hype to get Floyd one more $100 mill payday and Conor more money that the Ufc won't give him under a regular fight. It's also a nice way that Conor can continue to hold on to two belts without fighting a legitimate challenger in his own sport. Dana is cool with it because he is protecting his cash cow since he only has one major ppv draw right now. And I am sure he is probably going to get half of Connor's purse. Just my opinion.
