This is an example of how combat sports works:

I'm going to buy the Jones/Cormier fight in 2 weeks and its one of the biggest MMA fights this year....maybe 2 or 3 of my friends will come over to watch.

I'm going to buy the GGG/Canelo fight and I'll maybe get the same number of people.

With Mayweather/Conor, I have people calling me weeks in advance to see if I'm gonna get the fight. Not just my friends....my wifes friends....family...I've received at least 8 calls about this over the past few weeks. I'll probably end up buying then fight just because of this.

Same here unfortunately. I'm the only serious fan of combat sports in my circle so all of my friends who are casuals look to me when the big fights roll around.

Only saw the Barrera/Smith so far. A major setback for Joe, who was basically dominated after the first round knockdown. Strange how HBO had it as a 12 rounder, not knowing that the promoters changed it to 10 rounds.

                    1. Cardio. "That happens when you are in a sport that requires more cardio" Are you saying MMA requires more cardio than boxing? I'll dispute that in general, but when it comes to Floyd no one is topping him in cardio. The guy is a machine. But...

                    2. People seem to be forgetting Floyd is 40 years old. He is still the smartest boxer in history, but his physical reactions will be slower. A split second is all you need in boxing.

                    3. Conor's punching power will not scare Floyd. Boxers punch harder than MMA fighters period. Their bodies are machines built for this singular purpose. Floyd has fought many guys that punch harder than Conor

                    4. Floyd unquestionably has the power to KO Conor, but he doesn't have the will to do so. Earlier in the thread someone said they expect this to be similar to Floyd-Gatti. I don't think so. Floyd doesn't throw combos like he used to and perhaps more importantly, and why I view this as a farce...

5...They are not fighting due to a mutual dislike or competitive drive. They are fighting to make a lot of money. They are probably actually friends and plan on leaving the fight unharmed but richer.

Conor may not land anything of note in the entire fight (which I expect to go the distance), and Floyd will land potshots seemingly at will after the 4th round. But unless something changes before the fight, he will not chain them together. The people forking the money to watch this entertainment event on PPV are getting played.
does floyd lose any credibility if he does not knock conor out? i mean, this is the man's first fight, for pete's sake. and how much respect does floyd actually give conor in the ring? conor hasn't earned it, to be honest. to the first question, i say yes. he SHOULD knock him out. plain and simple. second question, zero. it has been strange for floyd not to state the obvious that conor doesn't belong in the same ring with him. that's like conor facing a man with zero mma fights under his belt, conor could seriously hurt a newbie.

It's totally feasible that Rios could have knocked Conor out. However, in this case, I think it was probably just Vargas being silly. Here's what he was quoted as saying.

“Conor has 1% – maybe 0.5% chance of winning,

“He got knocked out in sparring already.

“The boxing world is small, it’s a small circle. I heard they tried Brandon Rios but he knocked him out, so they had to push him away.”

This is a third-hand account from someone who had already dismissed Mcgregor's chances before all this.

Now there's another story that it was Bradley Wheeler who KOed Conor...whoever he is.

I believe it was Wheeler and the KO didnt happen during this training camp. It happened during the UFC 205 training camp last fall.

Floyd is trying to sell the fight. You dont sell the fight by saying "This guy is an amatuer who doesnt belong in the ring with me." You sell it by building up the other guy as being a threat but by you being better than him.

I think people are analyzing this completely wrong. Take the Toney/Couture MMA fight. I gave Toney 0 chance to win that fight because I knew that Randy would just take him down and submit him. However if Randy decided to stand with Toney, Toney's chance jumped significantly because he was a better boxer.

With this fight, I give Conor a less than 1% chance to win but lets stop calling Conor a newbie. He's trained in boxing for over a decade. Has sparred thousands of rounds. His primary tool is boxing based. 80% of all his strikes are to the head and over 90% of those are with his hands. This isnt like Cael Sanderson (wrestling great) stepping into a boxing ring with Floyd. This is a striker fighting a boxing god.

If Floyd does what Floyd does (Counter punch, shoulder roll), he should win this fight easily. As in he wont lose a round. But when I hear people like Max Kellerman say Conor wont land a punch thats bull****.

Here is a clip of Vasyl Lomanchenko sparring with TJ Dillashaw (former UFC bantamweight champ).

Vasyl clearly is getting the better of TJ (as he should) but TJ is still landing. Dillashaw is primarily a wrestler who's focused on striking for the last 5 years. Now Vasyl isnt going full speed but people have this false impression that all MMA fighters have no boxing skills and thats simply not true.

If he's got less than a 1% chance he might as well be a newbie. You are in the minority with respect to MMA fans, because they have bet up Conor to have a 20%-22% chance of winning. Of course, I recognize you are a fan of both.

They are two different sports. For him to get better he would have to compete with someone in an actual boxing match. Could he have beat last year's national Golden Gloves champion at 152 pounds? Could he have trained for one year without a sanctioned bout, and then qualify for a spot on the Irish national boxing team?

I dont agree with that. There are hundreds of professional boxers I would give a less than 1% chance to beat Floyd. Conor is fighting a top 10 all time boxer. There are plenty of pro WW that I would give Conor a much higher chance to beat (not making Conor the favorite but giving him a higher %).

I havent talked to a single intelligent MMA fan who thinks Conor is going to win or even gives him a decent chance to win. The only MMA media member who gives him a chance is Brendan Schaub and I think he's trolling honestly.

Why would he need to train for a year when he's been training for most of his career? That Chris Van Heerdan video that everyone has been talking about is from 2016 when he was prepping for the second Diaz fight. He does non-grappling sparring for every fight.

Its insane that he's getting a shot at Floyd without one pro but its also insane that 2 million plus people are going to pay 100 bucks for this.
