I was talking about this at work and someone mentioned that there is no way there are as many boxing fans as CFL fans! That really made me think - could that be true? It can't be, but maybe I'm over-estimating how many people watch boxing on TV...

The resurgence on TV over the past couple of years is evident, you have Showtime as a major power, HBO ppv and BAD, NBC Boxing, ESPN FNF's, and 'top rank'. At the same time, it could be a reflection of the sports TV market in general being insatiable.

Would, for example, a regular FNF broadcast get the same number of viewers as say the Cincinnati Tennis event? (not a grand slam) what are your thoughts guys?
Well Stiverne-Arreola had 940,000 viewers which was the highest rated ESPN boxing event in 8 years, although several ESPN Friday Night Fights were in the 500,000-800,000 range.
The 2014 Australian Open men’s tennis final drew 640,000 on that same network while the women did even worse at 390,000. However I believe both were in the morning, Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Boxing isn't like other sporting events in that you're not watching the 'cream of the crop' every time out.
Even if you were watching an Astros-Rangers game, that's still two MLB teams with MLB talent.
It's not like watching a young, unknown prospect beat a tomato can.

When top fighters are fighting each other, the sport can draw viewers - millions with the right card.
But at it's grass roots, maybe CFL is more popular in terms of TV viewership.

But as a whole, boxing is still crazy popular around the globe.
It would be even more popular if the 3 or 4 guys that run the sport would stop all this cold-war nonsense and get the best fighting the best.
Most undefeated prospects won't even fight one another until they have an alphabet title and a few cash-grab easy fights under their belt.

So this isn't specific to television, but here's some interesting recent data on the boxing demo.

I could have sworn when I first saw this months ago that it had some estimates for the total audience size of boxing/MMA and that they were in the range of 17-20MM in the U.S. Can't seem to find that again though.

On ShowTime tonight: (Fight Number In Parenthesis)

(1)Don't care about the Berto fight. (2) Guess I could be mildly entertained by Matthysse knocking this guy out unless Roberto Ortiz fights up to his 31-0 (24 KOs) record. (3) Main Event- Adrien Broner VS Emmanuel Taylor (18-2, 12 KOs). Taylor's most notable opponent was Cinderella Man Chris Algieri. Taylor lost that bout by decision, two fights ago.

For a city with a boxing tradition as rich as Cincinnati's is, it's pretty depressing that Adrien Broner is the "face" of it right now. I'm pretty sure Aaron Pryor is all cracked up in some alley, but he could still teach Broner a boxing lesson.

Matthysse's KO was pretty sweet though.

no, not at all. even the analysts were saying it could be one of the best fights of the year. it's just that many cincinnatians (incl. myself) who don't deny the fact that broner has talent...it's just his lack of class, his demeanor, and pretty much anything that comes out of his mouth is an embarrassment to those from the city of cincinnati.

Pretty much spot on Mikey. He has a ton of talent, but he also has bad ring IQ and him trying to be Mayweather does not work. That's not even mentioning his out of the ring persona, which is garbage. I like to root for anyone from this area, but he makes it impossible to root for him.

Good, not great fight. Taylor made it interesting.

Broner calling out Matthysse? A year and half ago I wouldn't give Broner a chance, but Matthysse's penchant for not being able to pull out close, big fights and Broner's "toughening up" after Maidana, make me think Broner has a small chance of pulling it off.

I thought Broner fought the best fight I've seen from him in a minute. I don't think he has the power to consistently fight at this weight but he was much more active than he ever has been before.

I don't disagree he'd have a small chance but still don't think I could pick him.

He's got all of the talent in the world but doesn't seem to have the tools to beat a strong fighter who is going to come forward. I like Taylor quite a bit but if Broner couldn't keep him off, he's not going to be able to do it against the Matthysse type fighters.

If he was a bigger puncher at 140, maybe. He just doesn't seem to have the same pop since moving up, so he's going to have to improve his ability to fight at range against the monsters if he wants to stand a chance.

From what I've seen, Broner is going to be in trouble against anyone at 147 or 140 that is a good puncher. His power has not moved up with him and his defense, despite trying his best to emulate Floyd, is mediocre at best and his output is low. He has all of the talent to rectify these things but I don't see it happening.

A rare Wednesday Night fight (ESPN 2) between Curtis Stevens and Hassan N'Dam. N'Dam is actually higher ranked (#10) by Ring Magazine. Hassan is saying Stevens quit against GGG. Do you blame him?
