of course not.

this is very simple:

P1 insulted P2 and P3, P2 and P3 have not reported this, later P3 responded by insult for ex, and was banned...
Question 1 - why P1 was not banned as a starter?
b/c he was not reported by anyone - b/c P2 added him to ignore list, P3 was naive may be.

Question 2 - is this OK for forum atmosphere?
is this fair?
I think no, better to ban BOTH or nobody.

1) Once again, its at the mods discretion.

2) This system has worked for this forum for decades. Before you even knew that this place existed. They dont need your help in redesiging a system that works well and that most of the thousands of people who come to this site are fine with.

You do need to be more careful though. Again, its a clear line. Attack the post not the poster. Say that what he said was a lie instead of calling him a liar.

I understand this when it comes to calling someone 'stupid'. They might say something stupid, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're actually stupid.

But in this case there's no functional difference between saying; "I think you're lying" or "Liar".
The latter implies the former. They're the same thing.

So yeah, thanks for the warning but I'm walking that line as a matter of principle..

If I overstep, I'll suffer the consequences.

Thats kinda the same thing. Someone can tell a lie but calling them a liar seems to state that they consistently or regularly lie (which may or may not be true about Sugata).

a person who tells lies.

I never said he lies constantly or even regularly nor is that implied in the definition. All I said was that he's quite clearly lying in his conversation with me and Retracted. It's an accurate description. If you cheat, you're a cheater. If you lie, you're a liar.

Where as calling someone stupid is actually not a behavioral description but a claim about someone's (lack of) cognitive abilities. Which is an actual ad hominem.
