Tovarich: We were lucky to be playing such a bad team. They managed to out-inept us slightly. The 3-point shooting was brutal. The FT shooting was worse. We couldn't make anything from more than 1 foot away. Idaho should have shot 3's every possession. They'd have killed us. We were lucky despite their massive rebounding advantage, which was embarrassing, that they couldn't make anything.

Reporter: What can you do to give the guards a jolt since they're all struggling?

Tovarich: I don't know. Maybe we need a lineup change. That game wouldn't have beaten New Mexico State, let alone top-20 Texas Tech. It has to be better. If it were somehow feasible, I think I'd like to start 2 PF's and 2 C's and maybe it would improve rebounding somehow. Maybe it was make the offense more efficient if we abandoned outside shooting. We already give up a bunch of jump shots and 3's anyway, so it wouldn't really matter much if that didn't change.

Reporter: Do you ever ask the assistants for some ideas for what to do?

Tovarich: My contract says I don't have to talk to them.

Reporter: Why do you have them then?

Tovarich: I think it's like a rule you have to have two of them?

I bet starting 4 bigs would be interesting. I'd start a PF at 2 and then just post him up for some easy hook shots and up-and-unders. I do bet it would marginally improve rebounding too.

Tovarich: Better than the last game I guess. It'd be nice to hit some 3's once again. All our opponents sure can lately, but we're in a lengthy slump from out there. The big guys mostly killed it. Grady was rough. Wilkins drew a lot of fouls luckily, because he was so-so making a point blank shot too. Luckily the backup big guys were more efficient. Luz was awesome. All the guards were pretty brutal.

Reporter: What did you think about the streakiness of the game?

Tovarich: I like where we were up 17-3. I didn't care for much of the rest of the half. Then all of a sudden they were awful for 10 minutes after halftime and we pulled away. Then I don't think they missed the last 4 minutes. Luckily we were well ahead by then. Wilkins was getting a lot of FT's in the last 4 minutes against the press, so that canceled out some of their suddenly incredible shotmaking.

Reporter: Is a lineup change the next possible way to jolt the guards?

Tovarich: It's very much a possibility for Texas Tech. But even Spears, and Pippen who are supposed to the best, can't hit a 3 lately either. So, will it really do anything? I don't know.

Reporter: What about your idea to start the 4 bigs?

Tovarich: Also possible. Obviously since they are the only 4 on the roster though, they'd be exhausted easily. That's probably not actually realistic. Just one of those things you blurt out because you're frustrated. I'd have to glance over Texas Tech's roster and see what they look like and if that idea is anything I should give any thought to.

Reporter: How do you outsmart Bob Knight when he's coached 1,332 games to your 89?

Tovarich: Mostly hope his team has a bad game. They've lost two in a row and just lost by 28 to 7-9 Oklahoma State. Maybe they're injured. Maybe they're in a slump. I'm sure I'd never outsmart Bob Knight. But his players are humans and they can slump all the same as ours can.

Tovarich: It's almost shocking to have hung on there. You think you're safe up 19 with 5 minutes to go. Then suddenly your entire team other than Luz goes inept. They scored 14 in 2 minutes while you missed 5 layups, got stuffed 3 times and it feels like you're suddenly cursed and you're playing an NBA team and you wonder where it's all been all game.

Reporter: Should you have just shot 3's all game?

Tovarich: We were doing ok in the paint for a while. Grady was just plain broken in the second half. He literally scored 0 in the second half. He missed 3 point blank shots in one possession. It was incredible. Luz totally bailed us out. It's all slipping away. Twice he hits a 3 to kill their momentum. The 19 point lead goes down to 11, then he gets you back up 14 and you feel good. Then 52 seconds later, it's down to 8 already. Then it's all the way down to 2 and we are going to dump it down to Atkinson and so many people crashed on him, he got it back out to Luz and he nailed it as the shot clock was expiring. That win's on him. But not until an incredible off balance shot and the and 1 to get it right back to 2 with 11 seconds to go. Thankfully they had to foul us 5 times and we ran around and got out of it. To get outscored 27-10 in the last 5 minutes and win is a miracle.

Reporter: Should you have run more clock earlier?

Tovarich: Yeah, with 5 minutes to go up 19, in previous years, I'd have done that. But I felt like we were destroying them, so even though they were pressing us and trying to speed us up, that was ok. But once you felt it slipping away, we shouldn't have tried to take advantage of the press for an easy basket, we should've held it for 34 seconds. We did eventually, but kinda late. You never think your opponent is suddenly going to score over 5 points a minute while you missed in the paint 10 times in a row.

          Reporter: How about Farley's game?

Tovarich: Luckily I stuck with him. Huge to hit all 4 3's he took. I'm happy if I can get one out of him usually. The guards on the bench were MIA. He can definitely keep his spot for now.

Tovarich: We were lucky to be playing such a bad team. That was starting to look like Texas Tech all over again. We score with 3:33 to go. We're up 15. Everything seems fine. Then we only score 4 points the rest of the game. 2 of those are FT's with .9 to go. Grady's 2/9 in the second half. We didn't make a 3 in the second half. Suddenly they're the Phoenix Suns at the end there. Ugh, whatever.

Reporter: Why do you think they didn't foul you down 6 with 47 seconds to go?

Tovarich: Yeah, baffling. Even if they knew we'd miss, which they probably just assumed we would based on how the previous 3 minutes had gone, there's no time for that. Then we grab the offensive board with 19 or whatever seconds to go and they decide to start fouling then. That was only their 3rd, so we ran the clock down to 1 seconds there before they made it to the bonus. Bad strategy there. I suppose you're 2-16 for a reason.

Reporter: Why do you think everyone went missing in the second half?

Tovarich: Two games in a row for Grady. He's 2/15 in the last two second halves. Insane huh? I don't know how that happens. It was noticeable quickly not just that he missed his first 3 layups, but the way he missed them, it seemed obvious. We had him queued up to go sit and he finally made one. But there's inconsistency and then there's whatever he's done the last two games. Must be over 80% in the first half and then down to 15%. At least in the Texas Tech game we hit some 3's for the first time in a while. We were right back to slumpville again already.

Reporter: Atkinson's injury didn't look serious?

Tovarich: No, sprained ankle. It'll linger with him for a week, but he won't miss the game Friday. You'd hope we don't need him but we're all over the place and the way Grady's doing a Houdini after halftime, we might need him.

Tovarich: That was a bit better in the second half. We finished better than the last two. 1/10 3-point shooting in the second half was pitiful, but at least Grady didn't disappear. Carbaugh was a foul magnet. The full court press was pretty sloppy on their part. I think all but 3 possession that entire game we saw it and their big guys were clumsy defending it.

Reporter: Now that the RPI is out, what do you think of your tournament chances?

Tovarich: 37 is decent. We might be able to take one more loss, definitely not two. No more power opponents, but certainly all four of those away games are losable.

Reporter: If my math was right, you were only up by 38 when you put Herman and Stivers in?

Tovarich: Yeah, the B team was getting tired.

                Reporter: How's recruiting going?

Tovarich: We're good on our own offer to the PG I think. We have a lot of contingency plans if Herman and Stivers decide to go elsewhere. I'm not sure if any of them are realistic though. We're miles behind everyone else. We just need them all not to offer.

Tovarich: I love playing against zone defense.

Tovarich: If we had a good shooting night. I'm sure we had some bad ones.

Reporter: Grady was quick to return. His injury isn't serious?

Tovarich: His sprained knee will linger for pretty much the entire upcoming road trip, but he's good to go.

Reporter: Why do you think they kept playing zone defense the entire game?

Tovarich: We cooled off a bit there in the second half. I think just 5/15. They should've shot more 3's. 10/15 is pretty efficient. They'd have kept up with us if they kept shooting at that rate.

Reporter: Do you think either team will make any changes to their play when you see them on this road trip?

Tovarich: Probably not. I know we beat them by 13 last year, then turned around and lost by 13 at their place. I'll have to go back and see if we just had an off shooting night.

Reporter: How eager are you to see a bracket projection finally?

Tovarich: Unfortunately with our incompetent AD and his poor scheduling skills, I think our season is pretty much over before we get to see anything and then we're just at the mercy of everyone else.

Tovarich: In a surprising reversal from normal, all the big guys kinda struggled and it was the outside shooting and FT's that separated us.

Reporter: Why do you think ALL the big guys struggled at once?

Tovarich: It's weird huh? Sometimes EVERYONE can't hit a 3. Sometimes you sub out a hot SG for another SG and they pick it right up, but the SF can't hit anything. Move one of the hot shooters in the SF position and they can't make anything? Just one of those crazy things I guess.

                    Reporter: How about Wilkins' rebounding?

Tovarich: 10 for the PF and 2 for the C? Atkinson was even efficient with 6 rebounds in 11 minutes. That's all part of the fun of starting a FR I guess. Grady's 5.1 is actually a slight improvement over Atkinson's FR year, by a meager .2 per game, but hey, any improvement in rebounding makes life easier.

Reporter: Is it a little frustrating to fall in the mid-major poll again despite being on a winning streak?

Tovarich: Who knows how that thing works. But it doesn't seem like it's a great sign for our tournament chances.

Tovarich: I don't know how we do it sometimes. We sure can make it look hard though. We're up 7 the entire second half. Everything seems good. Then we miss 8 shots in a row. They bounce in everything. They have people coming off the bench shooting 3's. They should've let the bench play the entire game since they shot 100%.

Reporter: What was the plan at the end?

Tovarich: 12 seconds to go, I know Raftery thought all we had time for was a miracle 3, but for reasons unknown, Air Force decided to full court press, so we got by it and with still 7 seconds, we had a free lane to the basket, so Pippen drove it in, someone flew in out of nowhere and fouled him while he laid it in. Dumb move by whoever that was. Then despite that, they had an easy shot at the end for the win and Munoz missed, his only miss of the game. We made a guy with 6ppg and 4.5 rpg look like Wilt Chamberlain, not for the first time either.

Reporter: Did you have the bench in at the end of regulation on purpose?

Tovarich: Not entirely. The starters were all pretty tired, but they were doing so badly at the time anyway, I didn't think the bench could do worse, and they inexplicably caught us back up, though I'd give the dope who fouled us most of the credit.

Reporter: You're 4-0 all-time in overtime. Is that a skill?

Tovarich: I don't now why we're so good at it. We get a slight lead and we play like it, unlike Air Force did at the end of regulation.

Tovarich: No drama at the end of this one luckily. I'm surprised to see only -3 in rebounds. It felt far worse than that. If we didn't get all their big guys two fouls before halftime, it probably would've been much worse.

Reporter: It seemed like most of the team had a rough game.

Tovarich: Mostly we relied on the centers in this one and Pippen had a good night. Just about everyone else struggled. Luckily we're building the talent enough that we almost always have options.

Reporter: How much is last year's result @ Southern Utah on the team's mind for this next one.

Tovarich: We'd just beaten them 2 weeks earlier just like this year and we were only a 9-game winning streak going in and we were barely competitive. We just beat them 2 weeks ago and we're on a 10-game winning streak. So, hopefully it's a reminder that anything could happen.

Reporter: Do you think Herman and Stivers will leave the team?

Tovarich: Hopefully. Freshman don't usually give up so easily, but he's very unhappy. We made a mistake on that scholarship and it'd be better if we pursued basketball elsewhere.

Are these 2 schools hockey rivals? I don't know a ton about college hockey outside of Denver being good at it. It could be fun for you to schedule a bunch of the hockey schools. Denver, Bowling Green, Minnesota, Michigan, Boston College, Vermont, Ivy League schools.

I have a hard time thinking anyone other than Fairbanks could be a rivalry. Looks like they have a spotty conference history and even dropped hockey for 2 years very recently, and almost dropped it permanently. They've been independent and it looks like their home games are few and far between. Denver has a really good program and probably thumb their noses at such an irrelevant team. When Anchorage was in a conference, it looks like it was with below average midwest schools that were not from the Big 10. Looks like Bowling Green is the only one that plays D1 basketball.
