Tate Sets Record In Orange Win

Syracuse was able to improve their record to 6-3 behind the arm of QB Kevin Tate. The redshirt freshmen set a Syracuse school record with 5 touchdown passes in a win over the Connecticut Huskies 52-31. Kevin Tate is making Doug Marrone look good for choosing him to be the starter this year. The Syracuse rushing game never got on track in this game and they really didn't need to. The young Syracuse QB was able to control the game all day and the UConn defense just had no answer for him.

The Orange struggled again on defense, but at times they showed they could be really tough. That seems to be the theme all season long for the defense, some parts of the game the are brilliant, and other times they are terrible. Today was no different giving up 31 points, but the also scored twice themselves on interceptions.

Kevin Tate shown here throwing TD pass number 5.

TE Adam Hall making his first catch for 6.

Andre Muse with his 2nd pick of the day, this one went for 6.

When asked about Kevin Tate's performance Cam Jackson said "He is a very good QB, and he has a lot of room to improve and grow."

When Doug Marrone was asked about Tate's game he said "Cam Jackson deserves a lot of the credit. He convinced me to start him at the beginning of the season, and he is the one that works with him every day. He is an outstanding player, and it would not surprise me if he broke every record at this school before he is done."

Orange Win On Late Field Goal

For the 3rd straight game the Syracuse Orange were able to win. This time they did it on the road in Provo, Utah against the BYU Cougars. The Orange played one of their best defensive games of the season, holding the Cougars to 14 points and less then 300 yards of offense. The BYU offense actually only scored 7 points as the defense got the other score. In the end though it was Syracuse that came out on top with a Johnny Brown field goal with 1:26 to play to get the win.

QB Kevin Tate was not as sharp today as he has been the last couple of weeks. Part of that had to do with the BYU defense as the refused to let the SU receivers get open down field. So the Orange leaned more on the run, and they controlled the clock really well. The offense still gained over 400 yards, even though they had trouble scoring points.

Johnny Brown seen here celebrating his game winning field goal.

      Shutang Mungwa with a sack.

Trey Byers carries a BYU defender into the endzone with him.

"It was cold, it was windy, and the crowd was against us, but we found a way to win. We don't get enough credit for how good we are, and that's alright, because teams under estimate us. We like being the under dog, but at 7-3 we shouldn't be anymore." Those were the words of coach Marrone after the game today. The Orange are thriving as the under dogs and they have to games left to prove even more how good they are.

That is what I am thinking. Last 2 games are at home and Pitt is 1 of them, they are always tough for me.

            Pitt Shocks The Cuse

In a game that the Orange needed to win to clinch their division and earn a spot in the ACC Championship game, the Pittsburgh Panthers came into town and ruined their day. Syracuse was plagued by penalties and turnovers. Two of the turnovers the Panthers returned for touchdowns, and the third was intercepted in the endzone stopping a possible Syracuse scoring drive. All these things kept Pitt in the game, even though the Orange defense played one of their best games.

The Cuse forced a couple of turnovers of their own. The first one was at the end of the 1st half when Anthony Wright hit the Pitt QB just as he pitched the ball and the Orange were able to recover and kick a field goal as time expired in the half. The second came late in the game with just 30 seconds left and the Orange trailing by 3. The Panthers were trying to run out the clock when they fumbled and the Orange recovered.

The Orange moved the ball down to the 27 of Pittsburgh with 6 seconds to go and 1 timeout left. Wanting to get the ball a little closer for a field goal attempt, the Orange, instead of trying a field goal, threw the ball. The receiver made the catch and instead of going out of bounds, he turned up the sideline and tried to score. He was stopped at the 3 yard line with no time left on the clock. A very disappointing loss for the Orange, but they still have 1 game to go with a chance to win their division.

Anthony Wright forces the fumble at the end of the 1st half.

Fumble at the end of the game that gave Syracuse a chance to win.

Chris Toth does his best Tim Tebow impression after scoring a touchdown.

Doug Marrone said after the game that he was very disappointed with his team with all the mistakes they made, and that Pittsburgh deserved to win the game. That was the only comment made by the coach, and no other coach would comment on anything. This was a very sloppy game for the Orange and they need to have a better game next week if they want a chance at the ACC Championship.

Syracuse To Play For ACC Championship

Syracuse needed a huge 4th quarter to get pass the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and they got it. The Orange needed this win in the last game of the season to clinch the Atlantic Division of the ACC, and earn their first ever trip to the ACC Championship game.

At the end of the 3rd quarter the Orange trailed 24-13 and Wake seemed to have this game under control. Syracuse finally got the ball with a little over 4 minutes to play and went into a hurry up offense. Less then a minute and a half later they were in the endzone to cut the lead to just 5. The Orange went for 2 but came up short on the play and had to give the ball back to Wake.

On Wakes next possession Syracuse was able to get an interception and get the ball back at mid-field with plenty of time to play. But the Orange came right out and threw their own interception (the 3rd of the day), that the Deacons were able to take back for 6 points (their 2nd pick 6 of the day). With the extra point Wake had a 12 point lead, and only about 2 minutes to play. It was starting to look pretty bad for the Orange. They had not played real good all day and the Demon Deacons really wanted a huge upset, which would make their season.

Then Syracuse came to life, on the next SU possession the offense scored in just 3 plays, cutting the lead to 5 again. The Orange kicked off with 3 timeouts left and were able to stop the Deacons while using up their timeouts and get the ball back. With the ball back and trailing by 5 and about a minute and a half left, Syracuse QB Kevin Tate threw a long touchdown pass to WR Geoffrey East for the lead, with the 2 point conversion good this time they lead by 3 with just over a minute to go. The TD pass by Tate gave him a new school record of 23 for the season.

On the next kickoff, Wake Forest fumbled on a play were the runner looked to be down, and the Orange recovered. Syracuse was then able to score their 4th touchdown of the quarter and seal the win.

A fumble was called on this play, and the Cuse sealed the win with a TD the following possession.

Jermi Wilkes seen breaking up a 4th down pass inside the 10 yard line.

Kyle Foster making a great catch for 6.

The Orange complete their best regular season in several years now, and have a shot at a conference championship for the 1st time since 2004 when they were Big East Champions. Head coach Doug Marrone said "It's a great day for Syracuse football. This sends a message that we are back, and we can be championship contenders." We will find out in 2 weeks if they can become Champions.

                Re: The Cam Jackson Story

                ACC Champions

The Syracuse Orange defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets today for the ACC Championship by a score of 45-21. The Yellow Jackets came into the game with a record of 11-1, undefeated in conference play and ranked #4 in the country. None of that seemed to matter to the underdog Orange, as they came out ready to play. After the 1st quarter in which the Orange defense struggled a little bit, they got their act together and shut down the Georgia Tech offense the rest of the game.

The Cuse was lead by QB Kevin Tate, who broke another SU record, this one for passing yards in a season. Tate threw for over 300 yards and 2 TDs. They also had a good game on the ground led by Trey Byers, who came up just short of 100 yards on the game.

It was the defense though that really led the way. Allowing a couple big touchdown runs in the 1st quarter, they got it together the rest of the game, and did not allow another score until late in the game. By then though the starters were on the bench and the backups were playing for the Orange.

                Trey Byers scores.

Anthony Pierce returns a fumble for touchdown.

Tate with the pass that breaks the school record.

"This was one of our goals when the season started, to become ACC Champs. We did that, now we have to get the final goal done, win another Bowl game." That is what Cam Jackson said after the game. "We know we are not done yet. We still have one more game to go and we don't care who we play, or where we play."

                  SU To Champs Sports Bowl

The Syracuse University Orange football team has been invited to play in the Champs Sports Bowl against the South Florida Bulls. The Orange will be playing another Big East team this year, but that does not matter to them. "We don't care who we play" said Doug Marrone. One thing that did disappoint the Orange was the fact they didn't get a BCS bowl bid, but with the new rules they are not guaranteed a BCS bid, and they knew that. Syracuse has also broken into the top 25 for the 1st time in over 10 years as they are now ranked #23.

                    USF Beats SU

The South Florida Bulls were able to defeat the Syracuse Orange in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando,FL. yesterday by the score of 34-27. Syracuse who plays in a dome back in Syracuse might have been effected by the weather, as it was hot, humid and the rain came down heavy the whole game.

The Syracuse offense was unable to put together any really good drives in the first half, as the Bulls defense was stopping the run and playing great pass defense. Orange QB Kevin Tate did not have his best game, and HB Trey Byers was shutdown all game long. Tate would end the season as the nations leader in passing yards. Also in the game, WR Geoffrey East would become Syracuse's all time leading receiver in receptions in his career, and he is only a junior.

Syracuse had a chance in the 4th quarter, getting to within 7 points with about 3 minutes to go, but they could not stop the South Florida offense from running out the clock. The Bulls just kept pounding away at the running game and the Orange defense could just not stop them. At one point they had them to 3rd down and the Bulls hit a pass over the middle to get another 1st down. Syracuse still had a great season winning the ACC Championship game.

                    Joe McKinney intercepts a pass.

Keenan Hale running for a TD.

Brian Howell scores making it a 7 point game late.

"It has been a great season and nothing can take that away from us." said Doug Marrone. "We played our hearts out today, but we just came up short. The Bulls had a solid gameplan against us and they stuck to it, and we could not over come it. The seasons over, but we can't wait until next season, we are gonna be a very tough team to beat."
