Seattle rises to 29-12 with game 2 of inter-league play tomorrow.

Padres 5 Runs in 3rd Enough For a Win...

The San Diego Padres had a solid outing offensively, as they won their 26th win of the season to the tune of a 7-4 victory.

Catcher, Ramon Hernandez, led the attack in the 3rd inning with a grand slam homerun - his 4th of the season. Brian Giles hit a homerun in the 3rd for run number 5 of the 3rd, and hit another homerun in the 5th for added insurance of a win.

Dave Roberts added more to the point total with a solo shot in the 7th.

The Mariners, just could not score, despite having 12 hits. They left many in scoring position because of mental mistakes.

          The series' finale is tomorrow.

Jeremy Reed, the CF of the Mariners, strained his lower back on a defensive mishap and will be out for a week. Reed will not be put on the DL and the M's will run a 23-man team. Willie Bloomquist will take his spot for the time being.

            Ryan Rises Over Padres..

Ryan Franklin pitched a gem in the series' finale against the Padres. Franklin went the whole nine innings, giving up 0 runs, and pitching 4 Ks.

Said Franklin, "I have to give a lot of credit to the defense, they really helped me out by getting me out of some jams."

Adrian Beltre was the leader of the M's offense, going 3 of 4 with an RBI.

Seattle travels to Baltimore for a 3 game road series.

Seattle's star first baseman, Richie Sexson, has been cleared to play in the upcoming series versus the Orioles. Sexson suffered a concussion earlier this month, and will start at 1st base in game 1. This moves Aaron Boone back to shortstop and Pokey Reese to the bench.

Trouble in the M's Locker Room, Trade Talks

An unidentified official from the Mariners has indicated that relief pitcher, Jeff Nelson has openly complained about his contract and playing time and that the manager and owner need to step in to fix matters.

Nelson currently has an ERA of 1.93 and has played the least innings among Mariner pitchers with 14. He also has the least appearances among relief pitchers with 12.

In other troubles, relief pitcher, Bobby Madritsch, has complained about his contract and playing time as well.

He stated, "The lack of my playing time is questioning my motivation to play for this team."

Madritsch was penciled in by many to be the M's 5th starter in the off-season, but Gil Meche beat him out and Meche's success shows that it was the proper choice. Madritsch is now a long relief, left handed specialist pitcher.

Despite the fact that Madritsch leads the team in wins, with 6, he also owns the team's highest ERA with 5.61. He has also allowed the most hits, batting average, and homeruns among relief pitchers. It also doesn't help that AAA star, Travis Blackley, is tearing it up in the minors.

In trade talks, corner infielder and outfielder, Jeff Conine, has been placed on the trading block today, and it has been reported that the Marlins were talking to the Mariners about Conine and a possible trade. Florida does need a relief pitcher and Seattle does need an outfielder with Jeremy Reed's recent injury. Seattle has the option of trading an upset Jeff Nelson to Florida for Conine, who has played a minimal role in Florida.

              We'll keep you posted...

Trade Talks Were True, M's Acquire Conine

The reported trade talks of Jeff Conine to Seattle were true, as the Mariner's front office decided to trade the likes of Jeff Nelson and a minor leaguer to the Florida Marlins for corner infielder and outfielder, Jeff Conine.

Florida received relief pitcher, Jeff Nelson, who was open to the public about his lack of playing time and contract situation. Nelson played in 14 innings, with a 1.93 ERA, and threw out 13 Ks. The Marlins also agreed to take an aging, Scott Spiezio, from AAA-Tacoma, earning 3 million this season as well as next. It was a big price to pay, but the Fish were in dire need of a reliever.

Nelson could find himself as a closer in Florida, as the Marlins have went through 3 different closers this season - all of whom, have an ERA of well over 4.10.

Seattle received 38 year old veteran, Jeff Conine, no stranger to the state of Washington, having been born in Tacoma in 1966. He has played in little games with the Marlins, and couldn't have arrived at a better time for the M's, as they lost Jeremy Reed for 6 games.

"I would have loved to stay in Florida," said Conine, known as "Mr. Marlin" to many, "But the lack of any playing time is hurting."

Quoted Owner/GM, Charlie Brown, "He will be very good in mentoring some of our younger players and should be an asset to our team. I am very happy with this deal."

Conine will make his debut in tonight's game against the Orioles. He will start at left field, moving Randy Winn to center. When Jeremy Reed does return, Conine will move to the bench as the go-to pinch hitter - he will get plenty of time, as Brown likes to constantly pinch run and hit.

In other news, Rafael Soriano has been called up from AAA-Tacoma to play in the majors, as Bucky Jacobsen was optioned to AAA.

                  Conine's Debut Spoiled By Loss...

New left fielder, Jeff Conine, went 1 of 5 in his Mariner debut, batting second for the M's. He had a double and 3 strikeouts. In Richie Sexson's first game back from injury, he went 1 of 4 with a 2 run homerun in the first inning.

However, it was not enough to send the Rafael Palmeiro led team home, as Palmerio's 2 RBIs and Sammy Sosa's RBI double led the Orioles to victory.

Bruce Chen pitched well for Baltimore, allowing just 2 runs, while pitching 7 Ks in 7 innings.

Sexson's Solo HR in 5th Enough For Win...

Richie Sexson, just 2 days removed from an injury, belted a solo homerun in the 5th inning that would give the Mariners the eventual win. So far, Sexson has homered in his first two games back from injury.

Randy Winn helped out, going 3 of 4 with an RBI, stolen base, and BB. He played center field for the second straight game - a position where he may need some work. However, he faired well with consitent catches.

Relief pitching was a key element in the victory. The likes of relievers: Julio Mateo, Rafael Soriano, Shigetoshi Hasegawa, and Eddie Guardado, pitched 3.2 strong innings. They allowed just 2 hits, 2 BB, and pitched 3 Ks. It was Soriano's 2nd game in the major leagues.

Lopez Hits a Grand Salami in 7th, M's Lose...

Seattle's, Jamie Moyer, and Baltimore, Sindey Ponson, found themselves in a pitchers duel throughout 6 innings - each giving up just 3 hits apiece. However, Moyer struggled in the 7th inning, allowing a bases loaded, 1 out situation. Skipper, Mike Hargrove, elected to sub out Moyer for Bobby Madritsch, who gave up a homerun and grand slam to Baltimore's, Javier Lopez.

Madritsch has been the worst Mariner's reliever, so far this season.

Seattle couldn't comeback in the next 2 innings, scoring just one run in the 8th.

However, good news comes their way, as they travel to Tampa Bay for their next series.

Sanchez Makes History as D'Rays Trample Over M's...

Tampa Bay's, Alex Sanchez, made history in today's game, becoming the first person in Devil Ray's history to record three homeruns in a single game. Sanchez, not known for hitting homeruns, hit two out of the park and had an inside the park homerun, pleasing the fans.

Not only was Sanchez on fire, but the whole D'Rays came up to play, surprising everyone - perhaps, even themselves.

Carl Crawford was a monster on getting on base, going 3-4 with two triples, two stolen bases, and two runs. Julio Lugo, Charles Johnson, and B.J. Upton each hit homeruns, as the Devil Rays scored a run in every inning through 7.

Seattle had their bright spots in the loss, however. Jeff Conine hit his first homerun as a Mariner and of the season. He had 3 RBI - a 2 run homerun and an RBI sacrifice fly. Aaron Boone also hit a homerun - his 2nd of the season.

Still... it was far from enough to overcome the big leads.

                          D'Rays Shutout M's...

Tampa Bay beat the M's again, this time in a shutout fashion. Dewon Brazelton came up big for the D'Rays, going 8 innings, allowing 0 runs, scattering 3 hits, and throwing 3 Ks.

Seattle managed just 4 total hits by three different players.

Tampa Bay's single run in the third was enough to earn the victory, as they can sweep the M's tomorrow - a feat that has yet to happen to Seattle.

Seattle's starting center fielder, Jeremy Reed, has been cleared to play with the Mariners in the series finale against the Devil Rays. Reed may have playing time, though he will not start until the series opener against the Blue Jays.

                              Madritsch Designated For Assignment

Today, the Seattle Mariner's Front Office, has decided that it's time for a new environment for relief pitcher, Bobby Madrtisch - they designated him for assignment.

The left handed reliever has the highest ERA among the Mariner's pitchers and has allowed 17 runs in just 28.1 innings - the worst ratio on the team. He has the second worst hits allowed per nine innings ratio and has given up the fourth most homeruns on the team.

"Bobby (Madritsch) is a good guy and a good pitcher," stated manager, Mike Hargrove, "But he's just not getting it done here in Seattle. We wish him the best of luck on whatever team he goes to."

The Mariners will have 10 days to trade, release, or send Madritsch outright to the minors.

This opens up new doors for the Mariners, as they called up lefty, Travis Blackley, from AAA-Tacoma. Blackley played 70.2 innings in Tacoma, with a 1.15 ERA and 7-3 record. He pitched 59 strikeouts and 13 BBs. He will become Seattle's long reliever.
