    Roster Rumblings

Today, Owner/GM, Charlie Brown, made a splash of adjustments to the current M's roster, bringing in Desi Relaford of the Colorado Rockies in a trade. The trade was a minor one, as no big name players were involved.

Seattle sent a disgruntled relief pitcher in J.J. Putz to Colorado for a reliable utility veteran. Putz, 28, pitched 22 innings in AAA-Tacoma with a 2-1 record and 2.46 ERA. He has been itching to play in the majors, but it was not meant to be as four pitchers are ahead of him to be called up in the future.

Colorado received a solid reliever who was just in a bad situation with Seattle. Putz will immediately play in the majors, as Colorado (14-19) need as much pitching help as possible with the second most runs allowed in the major leagues.

Relaford, a Mariner in 2002, will come off the bench in Seattle, as a pinch runner, hitter, and infielder sub. He can play any position except catcher, but is more suited at 3rd or 2nd base. He has registered 26 hits so far this season, with 5 RBI, 19 runs, and 2 stolen bases as a substitute. Relaford will wear number 25, the number he wore in his days as a Mariner.

To make room for Relaford on the 25-man roster, rookie infielder, Jose Lopez, was sent down to AAA-Tacoma. Lopez is still young and is just not ready for the majors at this point in the season.

In addition to the trade, the front office has decided to send down catcher, Miguel Olivo to AA-San Antonio. Among the everday starters, Olivo registered the least hits and RBIs. He also has the lowest on-base percentage, batting average, and runs.

*Olivo, 26, is still a prospect being groomed into a major league starter. He has plenty of time to impress the M's staff.

Veteran, Wiki Gonzalez, has been called up from AA ball. He had the most homeruns, with 4 as a pinch hitter.

Dan Wilson will assume the starting catcher role, with Gonzalez backing him up.

The new M's will make their debut on May 13 in the series opener against Boston.

*I edited him so now he sucks just like in real life.

      Seattle Serves Win, Lose Sexson...

Seattle won their 4th straight game, as they had a 4 run 6th inning that was enough to take home a victory against the '04 Champions, the Boston Red Sox.

But bad luck came when Richie Sexson slid into second baseman, Mark Bellhorn, and was shaken up with a concussion. He was taken out for the game, and the vacant position was platooned by the likes of Dave Hansen, Willie Bloomquist, and Aaron Boone.

      However, the team pulled through.

"We wanted to win this for Richie," said Bloomquist, "He's been such an asset to our wins."

Pokey Reese came in to replace Aaron Boone moving to first base, and was pretty successful against his former team. Reese went 1 of 2 with 2 RBI and a run.

New comer, Desi Relaford, played in the 8th and 9th inning. He went 0 of 1 with a run scored pinch running.

Jeremy Reed added extra insurance in the 8th, with a solo homerun - his fourth of the season. Reed has been phenomenal in his rookie season, currently batting .361 with much attention aimed towards him becoming a possible AL Rookie of the Year.

As mentioned, Richie Sexson did suffer and injury and was out for the rest of the game. Doctors estimate that Sexson will be out for at least 10 days. The Mariners have 8 games during his hiatus, and will run a 24-man roster until he returns.

Aaron Boone will try his hand at first base, moving Pokey Reese to shortstop for the time being. This is a gutsy call by manager, Mike Hargrove, as Boone has no experience in first base. However, first base is the easiest position to transition to. If the plan does fail, Dave Hansen is more than willing to step in.

        Hansen's the Best...

Dave Hansen came up big for the Mariners, hitting the game winner in the 8th inning. Hansen, regarded as the one of the league's best pinch htters, smacked a line drive into the right fielder, bringing in Desi Relaford and Jeremy Reed in for the game tying and game winning run.

"It's not an easy task," stated Hansen, "Pinch hitting is a key part for any successful team. And I just happen to be a pretty darn good one."

Hansen was cool under presser, finding himself in a deep hole in the eighth. With two men on and 2 outs, he had to find a perfect pitch it hit and put it far enough for two men to score... and he did just that.

Seattle picks up the win and can sweep the series tomorrow.

Seattle failed to pick up the sweep, as the M's got rocked for 9 runs in SAFECO Field, while managing to score just 1. All 9 were charged to Joel Pineiro.

Pineiro came into the game with a perfect 5-0 record and left the game scratching his head in amazement of his misfortunes. Pineiro lasted just 4 innings beforing pulled out in the top fifth after allowing a bases loaded, 0 out situation that Boston capitalized on.

Johnny Damon was the man on offense for the Sox, going a perfect 5-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs. He had a solo homerun in the first.

M's Bring Out Their Own Rally Monkey...

The Seattle Mariners fought back from a potential disaster as the M's improved to 28-10 on the year.

Facing a 6-1 deficit in the 8th inning, Adrian Beltre hit an RBI single that brought Desi Relaford in for his second run scored in the game. Raul Ibanez came up to bat next and found himself in a great situation - a bases loaded, 0 out ordeal.

Ibanez could either bring in Ichiro via an RBI sacrifice fly, or hit it out of the park for a game tying grand slam... He chose the latter of the two.

Ibanez drove in 4 runs for his 2nd homerun of the season and the team's first grand slam of the season.

Still, the game was not yet won.

Julio Mateo pitched well in the 10th, allowing the batters to do their thing.

Randy Winn got on base with 2 outs and Beltre came up to bat.

Little did he know that Beltre would become the hero of it all, hitting a walk off homerun to win the game. In addition to that, it was his 1,000th career hit - a tremendous way to earn it.

Seattle plays game 2 tomorrow with a 28-10 record.

New York's pitcher, Jaret Wright, pulled his hamstring in the 6th inning, and will be out for 2 weeks.

M's Hit Just 4 in Randy's Return to Seattle...

In Randy Johnson's return to Seattle, he pitched a beauty, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 5 Ks in 7.1 innings of work. However, it was not enough for him to earn the win, but the Yankees did get it thanks to a collapse of Seattle's reliever, Bobby Madritsch.

Madritsch came into the 6th inning, as starter, Aaron Sele, was in deep fatigue. Madritsch gave up zero hits in the 6th, but gave up 2 homeruns in the 9th that handed New York the win.

Yankee's catcher, Jorge Posada, was the one who broke up the tie with a solo homerun - his 4th of the season - and center fielder, Bernie Williams added some insurance with his 5th homerun.

Seattle can still take this series with a win in the series' finale.

Thanks everyone. Unfortunatley, this dynasty is on hold for about a week, as I am visiting relatives in California.

After that, I may get a few more games in here and there before I move to Florida. It will be up as soon as we get internet conection in our new house.

Well... I'm back. I'll be playing a few games today, so expect some updates.

Regarding the Bret Boone situation... he will be staying a Mariner in my dynasty. No way I'm letting him go, as he is one of my favorite Mariners. It's a shame he was let go in real life, though.
