M's Strike Early, A's Too Late in Comeback Attempt...

Seattle scored the game's first three runs, and that was enough to earn the victory as the M's won it to the tune of 3-2.

Oakland tried to mount a comeback in the 7th and 8th innings, scoring 2 runs via solo homers, but it was too little, too late as Eddie Guardado came up big with his 12th save of the season.

Guardado has been consistent throughout the entire season, allowing 0 runs so far in 12.1 innings.

Gil Meche had a solid outing, going 7 innings, throwing 5 Ks, and allowing 1 ER on 5 hits. However, he had a bit of a scare in his quest for a win, as Shigetoshi Hasegawa came in relief, allowing a homerun and 2 hits.

Ichiro hit his first homerun of the season - his only hit in 4 four at bats. Adrian Beltre went 0 of 4 with three strikeouts.

Jamie Moyer had a solid outing, going 7 innings, scattering 4 hits, allowing a single ER and BB, and pitching 5 Ks. His main reliever, Julio Mateo, was short lived in the game, allowing his first earned run of the season - a homerun by the Angel's Bengie Molina.

                Seattle's Center Fielder, Willie Bloomquist
Stat Line: 1-4, Game Winning 3-R HR

                Pure Entertainment...

The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels found themselves in a tight game today. Each team quickly striking, exchanging runs here and there:

LA took a 2-0 lead by the mid 2nd innings. Seattle quckly tied it with a 2 run 2nd inning and put 2 more runs in the third bringing it to a 4-2 game in their favor. Not to be outdone, LA got the lead back with 3 runs in the 4th. From this point, LA had a 5-4 lead. However, Seattle belted in 2 more runs for a 6-5 lead. LA put up 2 more in the 6th, giving them a 7-6 advantage. However, the final blow came by way of Willie Bloomquist.

Bloomquist knew he was to start at center field today, as the team faced a lefty. But little did he know that he would be batting second - a bold move by manager, Mike Hargrove.

"It was a surprise to see my name 2nd in the lineup," said Bloomquist, "I was really happy with the skipper's decision."

Bloomquist struggled early on - defensivley and when at bat. He allowed a triple by Juan Rivera after a mental miscue in fielding, and struck out in his first 2 at bats, with a pop out following that.

But Hargrove kept him in anyway.

"I knew he was bound to make some contact," said Hargrove, "So I let him stay in to try and produce something."

...and production is what he gave.

Ichiro on 3rd and Winn on 2nd, Bloomquist hit a 3 run homerun into left field giving the M's the 10-7 lead and eventual ball game.

After the tremendous victory, Seattle faces a sweep oppurtinity at SAFECO tomorrow.

                  Associated Press

                  "That Don't Impress Me Much"
                  Owner, Charlie Brown's AAA Report

On Monday, M's Owner/GM, Charlie Brown, was on a quest to find some AAA ball players to bring up to the majors. And after his 3 games of scouting, he was not impress by the offense.

Among those on his scout list were (stats recorded during 3 games):

                  Batters

                  OF, Jamal Strong
                  Game 1: 1-6, 2 K, CS
                  Game 2: 1-4
                  Game 3: 3-5, 2B, R, K

                  OF, Shin-Soo Choo
                  Game 1: 2-6, 2 R, RBI, SB, K
                  Game 2: 0-3, 2 R, RBI, SB, K
                  Game 3: 3-5, RBI, R

                  IF, Ramon Santiago

                  Game 1: 3-6, 2 RBI, 2B, CS, K
                  Game 2: 0-2, SH, BB
                  Game 3: 1-4, K

                  IF, Mike Morse
                  Game 1: 0-5, 2 K
                  Game 2: 1-4, R
                  Game 3: 2-5, 2 R, RBI

Brown did say that he was impressed by Morse's defensive efforts and Santiago's bunting. However, he was surprised by a certain player - corner infielder and corner outfielder, Greg Dobbs. During Brown's scouting, Dobbs went a total of 9 hits in 10 at bats. He recorded 4 RBIs and 4 runs. Although he was not happy with Dobb's decision to charge the mound after getting hit by a pitch in game 1.

On the pitching side of things, the three scouted had similar outings - strong, early outings, but struggles near the end of the game.

                  Felix Hernandez:
                  ND, 7.2 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K, 2 HR
                  Clint Nageotte: W, 7 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, BB, 3 K, HR
                  Travis Blackley: W, CG, 9 H, 3 ER, BB, 4 K
                  Rafael Soriano: (Game 1) 0.1 IP, 2 R (1 ER), Ejected - Hit Batter | (Game 2) SV, 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K

Of the four pitchers that Brown was looking at, he stated that Soriano would be atop the list of going to the majors, despite being ejected in game 1.

With set-up man, Shigetoshi Hasegawa struggling, Soriano could be called up sooner than expected. And with lefty reliever, Bobby Madritsch being subpar, Blackley could be called up in the near future as well.

But for now, don't expect anyone to be called up at this point in the season.

                    Sweepless in Seattle...

Seattle came up 2 runs short of a sweep, as the pitchers allowed 4 homeruns and the win.

Among the four Angels with homeruns were: Darin Erstad (3), Steve Finley (4), Juan Rivera (2), and Bengie Molina (3). Rivera also had a double and Finley's was a 2 run shot.

Ichiro and Adrian Beltre gave their best shot for a comeback, but was too short. Ichiro had a double and triple and Beltre had 2 RBI and a solo HR for his 7th of the season.

Cool as the Other Side of the Pillow...

Boston welcomed the 19-8 Seattle Mariners with a big intimidation advantage. The 2004 World Champions faced a team that was a mockery in '04, with Boston having big name players at virtually every position.

However, Seatte kept their composure and beat out the Red Sox, 4-2. The M's punched out 12 hits compared to the Sox's 5.

Ichiro hit 3 of those 12, going 3 of 5 with 2 RBI, 2 doubles, and a run. His average keeps on rising as he is now the owner of a .424 average. Bret Boone was solid, a rarity for this struggling second baseman this year, going 3 of 4 with a double and a run.

Kevin Millar scored one of Boston's run with a solo homerun into center field for his 9th homer of the season and Johnny Damon followed up with an RBI double.

Seattle played a bold move in the ninth inning - facing Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, and Trot Nixon. Hargrove opted to walk Ramirez in order to force a ground ball by Ortiz. Eddie Guardado executed the plan and got Seattle a double play. From this point, Guardado easily faced Nixon, as he popped out for the final play.

Pokey Reese played against his former team after being subbed in the 7th inning. He 0 for 1 with a run.

Seattle won it's 20th of the season and face the '04 World Champions tomorrow in game 2.

                        Under Pressure...

It's been the story of the M's season thus far: fighting back from behind and not giving up. And it was the same case in game 2 with the '04 World Champs, the Boston Red Sox.

Boston had a comfortable lead at 4-2 by the 3rd inning, as M's pitcher, Gil Meche, had a sluggish start. But their big guns held their own in the 8th, scoring 3 runs and the eventual game winner.

Adrian Beltre started it off with a 2 run homerun with Randy Winn waiting on first base. And Richie Sexson followed it up with a solo homerun into center field, which turned out to be the game winner. All homeruns were off of Mike Timlin, who pitched fat ones here and there.

Seattle has a rare chance to sweep the Champions tomorrow.

Boston Surges Out 6 in 7th...

To say Jamie Moyer had a bad outing would be an understatement and complete misconception. And it showed in the series finale against the Red Sox. Moyer pitched 6.1 unsuccessful innings, allowing 10 hits, 8 runs, and throwing 4 Ks and 2 BBs. 4 of those earned runs were homeruns.

On the opposite side, Matt Clement was somewhat unsuccessful as well. Clement went 6.1 innings allowing 5 runs and scattering 9 hits.

However, he and his team were bailed out by Jason Varitek and Kevin Millar. Both hit 2 homeruns each and both knocked out a homer in the 7th inning.

Seattle misses the sweep and travels to New York to face the, ever-so hated, Yankees.

Sexson and Boone Homer a Win...

Seattle won the opening of a three game series with the Yankees, to the tune of a 5-1 victory.

Seattle, pretty much cruised their way to a win, with a few bumps here and there. Richie Sexson and Bret Boone, each hit a homerun in the game. However, Joel Pineiro was the man of the night, as he pitched 7 strong innings to earn his 5th win of the season in as many attempts.

Pineiro had 6 Ks, allowing 1 earned run, and scattering 8 hits.

Seattle is quickly becoming a threat in the major leagues, as they own the major league's best record at 23-9.

                              Richie Rich Hits Game Winner...

Eddie Guardado blew his first save in tonight's game - his first after getting 15 straight saves with out one blown. It was his first earned run given up in over 16 innings of work. It came by way of a game tying homerun that was hit by New York's right fielder, Gary Sheffield, who tied the game at 3 a piece in the ninth inning.

Fast forward to the 12th inning...

Mariano Rivera stayed in the game, after pitching in the previous 2 innings. He struck out Ichiro, but allowed Randy Winn to hit a single. With Big Boy, Adrian Beltre, up, the Yanks elected to intentionally walk Beltre and take their chances with Richie Sexson.

Sexson stepped up to the plate as well as the challenge. He waited for the perfect pitch to hit and found it on a 2-1 count. He hit a screaming liner down the middle that reached far enough for Winn to score the eventual game winning run.

It was a gusty call for Yankee's manager, Joe Torre, to call and a bad move to try on the M's.

Seattle finished up the series tomorrow.

It's Gotta Be That SEATTLE Water...

In a rare occurance, the Seattle Mariners swept the evil empire we know as the New York Yankees.

In another close game, the M's found themselves died by the 8th inning at 5 apiece. And just like the previous game, the M's found their way into a win as Jeremy Reed brought in Aaron Boone on an RBI single for the imminent game winner.

Boone went 1 of 3 with a BB and 2 runs. Richie Sexson hit his 8th homerun of the season on a 3 run center shot. He was 1 of 4.

Seattle will see similar faces in their next two series, as Boston and the Yankees travel to SAFECO for 2 more 3 game series against the M's.

"HOWEVA", Boston and the Yanks will find a new face on Seattle's squad, as the M's have reportedly made a trade.

Commented the owner and GM, Charlie Brown, "It isn't a big name, over-the-top, blockbuster trade like in the NBA, but it is definitely a strong move for the team."

New York's first baseman, Tino Martinez, suffered a separated shoulder on a defensive play in the 1st inning. He will be out for at least 43 days.
