All trick, no treat: Ravens stuffed at the goalline after Steelers storm back

Pittsburgh, PA- Hell of a Halloween, eh? And so many questions the day after for the Baltimore Ravens.

-What if Kyle Boller wasn't intercepted inside his own 20, setting up a FG for Pittsburgh?
-What if B.J. Sams doesn't muff a punt deep in his territory, setting up Pittsburgh's first points?
-What if the defense clamped down and didn't allow a TD with 24 seconds left?
-What if Mark Clayton didn't have to dive for a catch inside Pittsburgh's one?
-What if it hadn't have rained all night, would Derrick Mason have caught the final pass?
-What if the Ravens had run the ball at the one yard line instead of three straight passes?
-What if the Ravens had simply kicked the FG and forced OT?

Too many questions, and no answers.

Coach Brian Billick faced heavy scrutiny afterwards, on all counts. The Ravens had 3 plays from Pittsburgh's one yard line with 7 seconds left, but didn't give it to Jamal Lewis. Instead, they ran three straight plays, the final one a slant pattern to Derrick Mason, but the ball slipped through his hands, and Heinz Field erupted, as the Steelers stunned the hated Ravens 17-14.

Boller finished 18-28 for 246 yards with 2 TDs and an interception. Jamal Lewis had a rough 86 yards on 29 carries. Mark Clayton had his best game, catching 9 passes for 124 yards and 2 TDs.

Ben Roethlisberger was awful until the final drive for the Steelers. He was 7-23 passing for 116 yards and a TD, with no interceptions. Duce Staley had 58 yards rushing and a TD. Hines Ward had ZERO receptions, but Cedric Wilson caught 4 passes for 74 yards and the winning TD.

Ray Lewis again led the Ravens with 10 tackles, and spiked his helmet onto the ground after the final play. Lewis had pleaded with Billick to kick the field goal, saying the defense would clamp down on the Steelers in overtime. Adalius Thomas and Tommy Polley each had five tackles for Baltimore.

Larry Foote had 8 tackles and a sack for Pittsburgh, followed by 7 from SS Troy Polamalu. Clark Haggans had 5 tackles and a sack. Joey Porter and James Farrior each had 4 tackles as well.

The Ravens look to pick up the pieces next week vs. the team right on their heels in the division, the Bengals.

          Week 9 Preview
          Volume 1, Issue 19

          Cincinnati Bengals (6-2) @ Baltimore Ravens (5-2)

          Cincinnati Bengals
Jon Kitna: 729 yards, 3 TD, 4 INT
Carson Palmer: 717 yards, 2 TD, 6 INT
Rudi Johnson: 205 carries, 839 yards, 8 TD
Chad Johnson: 54 receptions, 772 yards, 2 TD
Anthony Simmons: 72 tackles, 3 sacks, INT
David Pollack: 46 tackles, 2 sacks

          Ravens' Keys to the Game

          1. We're going to have to keep Brian Simmons occupied. Our gameplan should be to expose him in coverage, using a lot of play action to keep him off guard.

          2. Anthony Simmons can pile up 20 tackles in a game. Keep him away from the HB.

          3. Keep Chad Johnson out of the endzone. He has a nose for it.

          Key Matchups
          1. Chris McAlister/Samari Rolle vs. Chad Johnson
          2. Jamal Lewis vs. Cincinnati's linebackers

          Week 9 AFC North Matchups

Titans (4-4) @ Browns (3-4)- Former divisional rivals, the Browns look to creep back to .500.

Steelers (3-4) @ Packers (5-2)- The Steelers are hoping to ride the momentum from their stunning win over the Ravens into Lambeau Field.

Game of the Week (also MNF)

Colts (5-2) @ Patriots (7-0)- Peyton Manning has yet another chance to get the monkey off his back that is the two-time defending champion Patriots.

Bungles help Bengals steal one from Ravens

BALTIMORE, MD- And in the end, the DEFENSE let the Ravens down.

After a day of offensive blunders and an injury that ended their running attack for the day, a 64 yard pass from Jon Kitna to T.J. Houshmandzadah set up Shayne Graham's 20 yard chip shot FG in overtime, giving the Bengals a stunning 27-24 win on Baltimore's field. Baltimore kicker Matt Stover missed an 18 yarder earlier in the game.

The win also gave Cincinnati a game and a half lead on Baltimore in the AFC North.

Kyle Boller saw his grip on the starting job loosen, as he was terrible going 18-38 for 229 yards and 2 TDs and 3 crippling interceptions. Jamal Lewis was lost for the game with a bruised shoulder early on, and Chester Taylor could only muster 47 yards on 22 carries. Derrick Mason caught 7 passes for 70 yards, and the tying 13 yard TD with 17 seconds left. Todd Heap added 4 receptions for 77 yards.

Kitna was only 6-17 and had 2 INTs, but he also had 137 yards and a TD. One of his INTs should've crippled Cincy in OT, but Kyle Boller took back to back sacks to knock the Ravens out of FG range. Rudi Johnson rumbled for 169 yards and 2 TDs on 27 carries. While Chad Johnson had only one catch, Houshmandzadah had 2 for 83 and a TD as the Bengals rallied from a 17-7 deficit.

Ray Lewis had 11 tackles for the Ravens, followed by five each from Adalius Thomas and Ed Reed. Anthony Weaver had Baltimore's only sack, and Samari Rolle had 2 more INTs. He's making a serious Pro Bowl statement.

Brian Simmons dominated for the Bengals with 9 tackles, 2 sacks and an INT. Madieu Williams had 8 stops. Anthony Simmons, Duane Clemons and John Thornton each had a sack. Deltha O'Neal had TWO interceptions.

The Ravens are teetering on disaster, and look to right the ship next week in Jacksonville against a tough Jaguars team.

                Baltimore Ravens (5-3) @ Jacksonville Jaguars (4-4)

                Jacksonville Jaguars
Byron Leftwich: 1543 yards, 10 TD, 7 INT
Fred Taylor: 210 carries, 856 yards, 9 TD

John Henderson: 16 tackles, 8 sacks
Marcus Stroud: 23 tackles, 6 sacks

                Ravens' Keys to the Game

                1. Let's double Jimmy Smith with a corner and a safety. If we blanket him all day, he can't hurt us.

                2. Bring Marcus Stroud upfield on passing plays. Then throw a screen where he should be.

                3. Byron Leftwich is a great QB. We have to make it a point to shut him down. Let's blitz him constantly.

                Key Matchups
                1. Dan Neil and Edwin Mulitalo vs. John Henderson and Marcus Stroud
                2. Ray Lewis vs. Fred Taylor
                3. Chris McAlister vs. Jimmy Smith

                Week 10 AFC North Matchups

Browns (4-4) @ Steelers (3-5)- One of football's fiercest rivalries; the Browns can sneak into the AFC North race with a win.

                Monday Night Football

Cowboys (3-5) @ Eagles (5-3)- Another great rivalry, the Eagles are a shaky 5-3, and look to get on the right track with a win vs. Dallas.

                Game of the Week

Vikings (7-1) @ Giants (5-3)- With a revamped defense, the Vikings may be the class of the NFC. That defense will be tested though, vs. MVP candidate Tiki Barber.

Ravens come up one yard short AGAIN in 22-17 loss

JACKSONVILLE, FL- This is just cruel and unusual.

Two weeks after losing to the Steelers after having three plays from the one yard line and not converting, the Ravens found themselves in the same position this time.

This time, they gave the ball to Jamal Lewis.

                  And Jamal Lewis didn't score.

Lewis was stonewalled half a yard away, and time ran out on the timeout-less Ravens, and the Jaguars won the game 22-17, staving off a furious comeback.

Kyle Boller threw three passes, completed none of them, was intercepted once, and was benched. Anthony Wright came in and threw fire, going 15-19 for 282 yards and 2 TDs with no INTs. Lewis was stopped all day, gaining only 82 yards on 31 carries. HE also lost two pivotal fumbles. Todd Heap was unstoppable, catching 8 passes for 197 yards and a TD, most of that on the Ravens' final two drives that almost completed the comeback.

Byron Leftwich was efficient, going 16-24 for 175 yards and TD, without an INT. Fred Taylor found holes at times, but was contained for the most part, gaining 71 yards on 25 carries. Leftwich completed passes to 8 players, Jimmy Smith leading them with 3 catches for 43 yards and a TD.

Once again, Ray Lewis was everywhere, registering 18 tackles. Adalius Thomas had 7, and Ed Reed had 5. Chris McAlister had Baltimore's only sack, and the Ravens forced no turnovers.

SS Donovin Darius led the Jags with 10 tackles, followed by seven from Mike Peterson and Rashean Mathis. Mathis also had a sack and an interception.

The Ravens have now lost 3 in a row, and are desperate to stop the bleeding next week, as the Steelers make their annual trip to Baltimore.

Hopefully you'll get back to winning against the Steelers.

                          Pittsburgh Steelers (4-5) @ Baltimore Ravens (5-4)

                          Pittsburgh Steelers
Ben Roethlisberger: 1628 yards, 10 TD, 7 INT
Duce Staley: 264 carries, 980 yards, 5 TD
Hines Ward: 40 receptions, 566 yards, 5 TD
James Farrior: 55 tackles, 2 sacks, INT
Joey Porter: 54 tackles, 3 sacks

                          Ravens' Keys to the Game

                          1. Troy Polamalu will make plays if we let him. Force him to stay in coverage and not just play centerfield.

                          2. Ben Roethlisberger is a great QB. We have to make it a point to shut him down. Let's blitz him constantly.

                          3. Use misdirection and counters to offset an aggressive James Farrior.

                          Key Matchups
                          1. Chris McAlister vs. Hines Ward
                          2. Offensive Line vs. Joey Porter and James Farrior
                          3. Ray Lewis vs. Duce Staley

                          Week 11 AFC North Matchups

Colts (7-2) @ Bengals (7-2) (Game of the Week)- The surprising Bengals are two games ahead of the Ravens in the AFC North. The Ravens are Peyton Manning fans this week.

Dolphins (4-5) @ Browns (4-5)- The Dolphins' 2nd ranked defense has kept them near .500, while the Browns COULD draw even with the Ravens in the North with a win and a Ravens' loss.

                          Monday Night Football

Vikings (8-1) @ Packers (6-3)- The Vikings could put a hammerlock on the NFC North if they finish the season sweep of their #1 rival.

Ravens exact revenge on Steelers, end 3 game skid

BALTIMORE, MD- And just as it always is, the Ravens and Steelers split their season series.

Ray and Jamal Lewis dominated their respective sides of the ball, as the Ravens gained a measure of revenge for the Monday Night loss at Pittsburgh 3 weeks ago with a 38-20 drubbing of the rival Steelers.

Anthony Wright was 6-12 passing for 116 yards, with 2 TDs and an INT. Jamal Lewis carried 34 times for 151 yards and a TD. Mark Clayton led the receivers with 3 catches for 46 yards and both Wright TDs.

Ben Roethlisberger was 12-21 passing for 231 yards with 2 TDs and an INT. It would've been two INTs, but one was called back on a pass interference penalty. Duce Staley had 56 yards rushing, but on 24 carries. Antwaan Randle El caught 5 passes for 114 yards and 2 TDs, and Cedric Wilson--the hero of the first meeting--had 4 for 70. Hines Ward caught only one pass for 15 yards.

Ray Lewis was everywhere, as he had 10 tackles, a pair of sacks, and an interception. Ed Reed and Samari Rolle both had 6 tackles apiece. Adalius Thomas had 5 tackles and a sack.

For Pittsburgh, Troy Polamalu has 9 tackles, followed by Chris Hope, who had 8 and an interception. Joey Porter had 5 tackles, and Larry Foote and James Farrior each had 4.

At 6-4, the Ravens are one full game behind the Bengals in the AFC North. They can draw even with the Bengals next week, as the two teams face off in Cincinnati. The Bengals won the first meeting in Baltimore in Overtime, 27-24.

                                Baltimore Ravens (6-4) @ Cincinnati Bengals (7-3)

                                Cincinnati Bengals
Jon Kitna: 1137 yards, 5 TD, 6 INT
Rudi Johnson: 256 carries, 1122 yards, 10 TD
Chad Johnson: 66 receptions, 934 yards, 2 TD
Anthony Simmons: 83 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 INT

                                Ravens' Keys to the Game

                                1. We're going to have to keep Brian Simmons busy. I think we should run right at him, forcing him to make plays all game. Let's see if he tires.

                                2. Anthony Simmons can pile up 20 tackles in a game. Keep him away from the HB.

                                3. Our offensive line should overwhelm their defensive line. We're much more talented than they are and that should allow us to establish the run.

                                1. Chris McAlister vs. Chad Johnson
                                2. Jamal Lewis and Offensive Line vs. Bengals' Linebackers
                                3. Terrell Suggs vs. Willie Anderson

                                Week 12 AFC North Matchups

Browns (5-5) @ Vikings (9-1)- The Browns are surprising, but the Vikings are elite, and may be too much for Cleveland.

Steelers (4-6) @ Colts (8-2) (MNF)- The Steelers are still in it, but they can't afford to fall behind any further. The Colts are running away with the South.

                                Game of the Week

Patriots (8-2) @ Chiefs (7-3)- The Patriots have the 5th ranked offense and 4th ranked defense, while the Chiefs offense is 9th. However, KC's much improved defense has surged to #2 in the league, and the Chiefs are in the running for homefield.
