Ravens celebrate the new year with AFC North Championship
CLEVELAND, OH--The locker room celebration was somewhat calm, with just a bit of champagne going around.
The Ravens know their mission is not done.
But it was an accomplishment nonetheless, as the Ravens beat the Browns 23-14 in Cleveland on New Year's Day to deny the Bengals and celebrate their 2nd AFC North title in 3 years.
"It's a great feeling, but we know that this isn't our ultimate goal," Strong Safety Ed Reed said in the locker room.
Quincy Carter struggled in the fourth quarter after a good start, finished 15-30 for 199 yards with a TD, but two INTs. The Ravens attempted a fake FG in the 4th, and QB Kyle Boller, like the snake that he is, threw an interception at the goalline.
Jamal Lewis had only 14 carries for 53 yards, after he complained about being over-worked throughout the season. The rift between him and the Ravens' front office appears to be growing, and one has to wonder how negotiations will go in the offseason when Lewis' contract expires.
Receiving wise, Mark Clayton concluded an excellent rookie regular season with 6 catches for 63 yards. Koren Robinson had 3 catches for 69 and a TD, and Derrick Mason caught 3 as well for 33 yards.
Trent Dilfer was 14-30 passing for Cleveland for 203 yards with a TD and an interception. Reuben Droughns carried the ball 25 times for 71 yards. Rookie Braylon Edwards was Cleveland's only real receiving threat with 8 receptions for 95 yards. #1 receiver Andre Davis had a 52 yard TD, but it was his only catch.
In an effort to lead the NFL in tackles, Ray Lewis' led the Ravens with 11 tackles. CB Samari Rolle, who is Hawaii-bound, had 9 stops. Adalius Thomas had 7 tackles and two sacks, and Tommy Polley had 6 tackles. FS Will Demps had a fumble recovery for a TD and an interception deep in his own territory to save the Ravens when their lead was only 20-14.
Daylon McCutcheon had 8 tackles for the Browns. Brian Russell had 7 tackles and a pair of interceptions, and Michael Jameson and Ben Taylor each had 6 tackles. OLB Chaun Thompson had 3 sacks.
The Ravens how have to wait for the pieces to fall in place and see where they end up in the first round of the playoffs.

Volume 1, Issue 42
Kansas City Chiefs (11-5) @ Baltimore Ravens (11-5)
Kansas City Chiefs
Trent Green: 3576 yards, 30 TD, 19 INT
Priest Holmes: 1573 yards, 13 TD; 691 receiving yards, 7 TD
Eddie Kennison: 72 receptions, 911 yards, 9 TD
Tony Gonzalez: 69 receptions, 582 yards, 3 TD
Kendrell Bell: 103 tackles, sack, 2 INT
Lional Dalton: 46 tackles, 12 sacks
Ryan Sims: 54 tackles, 11 sacks
Ravens' Keys to the Game
1. Take Shawn Barber out of the game. Force him to cover the TE deep often.
2. Kendrell Bell might cause some trouble for us. We have to get our lineman upfield on running plays to take him out of the equation.
3. Sammy Knight is one of the best safeties in the NFL and he can do it all. If we can establish the run, it will force him to come up into the box and play the run.
Key Matchups
1. Ray Lewis vs. Priest Holmes
2. Ed Reed vs. Tony Gonzalez
3. Dan Neil and Edwin Mulitalo vs. Lional Dalton and Ryan SimsLast edited by Psyblast; 08-20-2005, 12:53 PM.Comment

Ravens' defense bends but doesn't break in wild Wild Card win
BALTIMORE, MD--Despite the offensive fireworks throughout the game, it was the Ravens' defense that saved the day in the end.
The Ravens stopped the Chiefs twice on fourth down in the final five minutes, preserving a spot in the Divisional Round with a 28-25 win at home.
Quincy Carter was the surprising hero as the Ravens surprised the Chiefs by abandoning the run in favor of the pass. Carter was 19-29 for 257 yards, four TDs and only one INT. Jamal Lewis carried 22 times for only 73 yards. Koren Robinson caught 6 passes for 92 yards, Mark Clayton had 5 receptions for 60 yards and a TD, Todd Heap had 4 catches for 71 yards and a pair of scores, and Derrick Mason caught 3 for 34 and a TD.
Trent Green was 21-35 for Kansas City for 342 yards with a pair of TDs and an interception. The Chiefs made the mistake of giving Priest Holmes the ball only 18 times. He gained 93 yards and a TD. Dante Hall caught 7 passes for 102 yards, Eddie Kennison had 6 catches for 114 and a TD, and Tight End Tony Gonzalez had 4 receptions for 77 yards and a TD.
On defense, Ray Lewis had a season low 6 tackles, tied with Ed Reed for the lead on the team. Tommy Polley, Will Demps, and Samari Rolle each had 5 tackles. Chris McAlister had 4 tackles and Baltimore's only INT.
Jerome Woods led KC with 8 tackles, followed by 6 from Patrick Surtain, and 5 from both Eric Warfield and Kendrell Bell. Bell also had KC's interception off a deflection.
The Ravens now travel to Indianapolis to face the offensive juggernaut, the Colts. The Ravens beat the Colts in the season opener in Baltimore, 20-14.

Re: Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore @ Indianapolis
AFC Divisional Playoff
RCA Dome
Indianapolis, IN
January 14th, 2006
Ravens lower the boom in stunning annihilation of Colts
INDIANAPOLIS, IN--In a battle between the best offense and defense in the NFL, the defense put on a legendary performance.
The Ravens swarmed all over Peyton Manning, sacking him 3 times, intercepting him four times, knocked him out of the game twice, and scoring defensively twice in an amazing 37-0 rout of the powerful Colts on their own turf.
"This was special out here today. I love these guys to death," MLB Ray Lewis said of his defensive teammates. The Ravens forced 10 punts, while allowing only 7 first downs. They held the Colts under 100 total yards of offense until the final minute, and preserved the shutout with an interception in the endzone.
Quincy Carter managed the game perfectly, going 11-21 for 144 yards and a TD, with no turnovers. Jamal Lewis bowled through and over the Colts' sieve of a defense, carrying a bull-like 40 times for 234 yards and a touchdown. Derrick Mason caught 4 passes for 34 yards.
Manning's performance was even worse than his infamous collapses against the Patriots in year's past, as he was a dreadful 12-37 for 107 yards and the 4 interceptions. Edgerrin James was mauled by the Ravens' blanket D, carrying 10 times for 19 yards. Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison had 4 receptions each, but had only 33 and 24 yards respectively.
Lewis once again led the Ravens' defense with 12 tackles, a pair of sacks and a touchdown off an interception return. Samari Rolle had a pair of INTs (including a TD), and Chris McAlister made the INT that preserved the shutout.
Cato June and Mike Doss both had 8 tackles for Indy, followed by 7 from Nick Harper. David Thornton had 5 tackles and a sack. In a bit of poetic justice, Linebacker Rob Morris (who beat out Ray Lewis by two tackles for the NFL lead) had a mere 3 stops.
The Ravens upset wasn't the only one in the AFC, as the Chargers knocked the Patriots' dynasty off the tracks. The Ravens and Chargers now face off in San Diego for a right to go to Detroit for Super Bowl XL.
