    Re: Lan's New York Mets

New general manager Omar Minaya quickly put his stamp on the Mets by inking two of the highest-profile free agents on the market in Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran. All Martinez did was lead the team in wins (15), strikeouts (208) and innings (217). Beltran struggled a bit in his debut, but still posted 16 home runs and 17 stolen bases.

The Willie Randolph era began with a thud, as the Mets were swept in their opening series against the Reds on the road. But it wasn't long before Mets fans everywhere would see their new manager's effect on the team. New York righted their ship and stayed in and out of the hunt all year, even making a late September push back over .500 and into third place in the division.

A rotation featuring Martinez, late 2004 acquisition Kris Benson and veteran Tom Glavine proved a work in progress most of the year, but young arms like Jae Seo and Aaron Heilman more than held their own. The speedy Jose Reyes led the National League in both steals (60) and triples (17), and terrorized opposing catchers. Young David Wright also took the next step, powering to a .306 average, 27 home runs and 102 RBIs at the hot corner. He also made what may be the defensive play of the early millenium with a barehanded overhead catch in a game against San Diego. The rest of the club's power came mostly from left fielder Cliff Floyd (34 HR).

While the Mets came up short in their quest to return to the postseason, Willie Randolph and Omar Minaya showed they were focused on winning, and the Mets' core of young stars certainly showed impovement in 2005.

Now in 2005, with the acquisitions of Carlos Delgado, Xavier Nady, Paul Lo Duca, Julio Franco, Duaner Sanchez, and Billy Wagner, as well as the hopeful emergence of 2nd baseman Anderson Hernandez, the New York Mets find themselves in a favorable position to win the NL East Crown. Will they be able to earn it back from the Atlanta Braves, or will they falter again? Only time will tell. With that being said, LETS PLAY BALL!

Game 1: Washington Nationals @ New York Mets

Mets Fail to Capitalize on Opportunities, Fall 4-0

New York (AP)- The New York mets failed to produce with runners in scoring position tonight despite scattering 11 hits over the course of the game. There were several opportunities that were blown, including a 1st and 3rd situation and a double play turned to get out of a bases load jam. Mets starter Pedro Martinez was saddled for the loss as he pitched 7 innings giving up 3 runs, 2 earned, 8 hits, and struckout 2 while throwing 97 pitches. Bradford would give up a solo home run in the 8th, and Heilman pitched himself out of a bases loaded jam in the 9th after giving up 3 straight singles. The offense for the Nats was provided on a solo shot by Soriano, who also singled home a run. Johnson and Zimmerman both drove a run in. Livan Hernandez pitched 8 innings, giving up no runs, 10 hits, and striking out 7.

New York (AP)- Newcomer Xavier Nady went 3 for 5 on the night with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs en route to a Mets 8-2 victory over the Nats. Tom Glavine got the win for the Mets on the night going 6 innings giving up 2 runs on 8 hits, striking out 1 and walking 1. Julio and Sanchez turned in a combined 3 innings of scoreless relief. John Patterson and Joey Eischen got rocked on the night for the Nats. Patterson gave up 4 runs on 7 hits in 4 2/3 innings while striking out 5. Joey Eischen gave up 4 runs on 4 hits in 1 2/3 innings. Stanton and Majewski finally stopped the Mets from scoring but it was too late. Also having good games for the Mets was David Wright who was 3/4 with a 2 RBI double, and every Met that came to the plate except Franco and Hernandez had a hit.

Game 3: Washington Nationals (1-1) @ New York Mets (1-1)

Nick Johnson Drives Nats Past Mets 6-4

New York (AP)- Nationals 1st baseman Nick Johnson went 3 for 4 on the night with a pair of home runs and 3 RBIs en route to a 6-4 victory for the Washington Nationals. Despite giving up 4 runs, 3 earned, in 6 innings of work, rookie pitcher Brian Bannister looked well on the night giving up only 4 hits while striking out 1 and issuing 0 walks. Tony Armas struggled somewhat over the course of the game over 4.2 IP, giving up only 1 run however, but did let up 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4.

After falling behind 4-1 after 7 innings the Mets were able to piece together 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th off of reliever Mike Stanton to pull within 4-3. In the top of the 9th reliever Chad Bradford gave up a 2 run homer to Ryan Zimmerman to give the Nats the 6-3 advantage and that would be enough as Cordero was able to close the door on the Mets after giving up a run to make the final 6-4.

Game 4: Florida Marlins (2-1) @ New York Mets (1-2)

              Mets Drop 2nd Straight, 5-3

New York (AP)- Miguel Cabrera drove in 2 home runs and 3 RBI as the Marlins improve to 3-1 on the season with a 5-3 victory over the Mets. Mets starter Steve Trachsel struggled all game long for the most part going 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits, walked 4, and struckout 2 in the loss. Julio gave up the 5th run on a solo homer by Mike Jacobs in the 7th. The Mets had a lot of problems on the day grounding into double plays to kill any kind of rally that they started. Trachsel, Hernandez, and Woodward all GIDP. The Mets offense was provided by David Wright who drive in his 4th run of the season, and Anderson Hernandez who hit a bases loaded 2 RBI single.

Jose Reyes left the game in the first inning after swiping 2nd base with an undisclosed injury, but will not miss any more time as it was not serious enough to keep him on the bench or send him to the DL.

Game 6: Florida Marlins (3-2) @ New York Mets (2-3)

Valentin's 3 Run Homer Lifts Mets, 8-5 Win

New York (AP)- On a normal day Jose Valentin wouldn't even be in the Mets lineup. However Anderson Hernandez was given the day off and Jose Valentin delivered big with his only hit of the game. The Mets were trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the 6th. After giving up a single to David Wright and retiring Cliff Floyd for the 2nd out, Willis elected to intentionally walk Xavier Nady who was 2 for 3 with a 2 run homer in order to get to Jose Valentin who was 0 for 2 on the day with a strikeout. With 2 outs and 2 on Valentin delivered a 3 run opposite field home run to drive in 3 of the 4 runs scored by the Mets in the inning to power them to the 8-5 victory. Pedro Martinez had a solid outing going 6 innings giving up 4 earned runs on 8 hits, while striking out 7. Bradford and Sanchez both turned in scoreless innings, as did Billy Wagner who recorded his 2nd save in as many days.

Game 7: New York Mets (3-3) @ Washington Nationals (3-4)

Nats Win it Walk-Off Style, 4-3

Washington (AP)- The Mets made a critical managerial mistake tonight that ultimately cost them the game against the Nationals tonight. The manager opted to leave pitcher Tom Glavine in the game for the 9th inning with a 3-1 lead to work with. Glavine had thrown only 74 pitches and given up only 1 run all the way back in the first inning on 3 hits. This proved to be the wrong decision ultimately as the Nats were able to put together a 3 run 9th, starting with an RBI by Soriano. Then with 1 out and Vidro on 2nd base Nick Johsnon, who was 0 for 3 coming into the bat, jumped on a first pitch changeup and launched it to dead center field past the 410 sign for a 2 run walk-off bomb putting the Mets away.

The Mets scoring was provided once again by Xavier Nady who drove in 2 runs to increase his RBI total to 10 already in the earlygoing. Paul LoDuca drove in the other run for the Mets. Tony Armas Jr. once again pitched well for the Nationals going 6.1 giving up 3 runs on 8 hits, striking out 7. Eischen picked up the W for the Nats, improve to 3-1 against the Mets.

Bannister Shuts Down the Nats 2-1 for First ML Victory

Washington (AP)- Brian Bannister dominated the Washington Nationals tonight to record his first major league victory. Bannister went 7 strong innings giving up just 1 run on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 2. Billy Wagner picked up his 3rd save of the season pitching a scoreless 9th. Xavier Nady, once again, drove in the only earned Mets run for his 11th RBI of the season. The Mets were only able to score 2 runs despite scraping together 11 hits. I don't ahve a full report cause it was a fairly boring game full of a lot of groundball outs.

Washington (AP)- With starters Alfonso Soriano, Jose Guillen and Jose Vidro on the bench for rest the Nationals lineup looked like something out of a AAA club. Trachsel took advantage of this pitching 7 innings giving up 0 runs on 6 hits, walking 1 but not striking out any. Darren Oliver pitched the final two innings giving up 2 hits and striking out 3. The Mets offense was provided on a 3 run homer by Carlos Delgado in the first inning and a 4 for 4 day for the rookie Anderson Hernandez en route to the 4-0 victory.

Pedro 1 Hits the Brewers, Mets Win 2-0

New York (AP)- Pedro Martinez dominated the Brewers tonight pitching a complete game 1 hit shutout, striking out 7 and walking 2 en route to the 2-0 victory. Chris Capuano pitched quite well himself going 8 striking out 7 and giving up 2 runs on 5 hits but it wasn't enough. Jose Valentin, in only his 2nd spot start of the season, hit his 2nd home run in the 5th inning, a solo shot to right to put the Mets up 2-0. The other run was on a David Wright sacrifice fly. The only hit for the Brewers came from Carlos Lee.

New York (AP)- The Mets have acquired a gold glove shortstop from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 4-player deal sending 2B Jeff Keppinger and SP Steve Trachsel to LA for SS Cesar Izturis and SP Aaron Sele to New York. Cesar Izturis will take over the duties at shortstop and Jose Reyes will move to 2nd base where the Mets played him a couple of seasons ago. Reyes has the potential to be a special player at short, but the Mets organization feels that having a proven gold glover manning the position for now would be most beneficial for the team's success.

Chris Woodward and Darren Oliver have been demoted to the inactive roster. Juan Padilla has been called up to the pen and Aaron Heilman will take over Steve Trachsel's spot in the rotation.
