Defense Superb Again as Mountaineers Win "Backyard Brawl"!!!
Defense Allows Only 224 Yards in Huge Win on the Road

    N/R 14 -- (7-4)
    #16 07 -- (8-3)

    Pittsburgh, PA -
This was a huge clash of Big East heavyweights, but that was not the focal point of tonight's game. It was the "Backyard Brawl" and the stakes were very high. For both teams, this was their final Big East game of the season. The weather was nice for this edition of the "Backyard Brawl", unlike last year's edition in Morgantown, when the snow came down heavy and often in a game that decided the Big East Championship.

For Pittsburgh, the story was missed opportunities. The Panthers got into the red zone twice, but did not convert either one. The Panthers missed a 39 yard field goal in the first quarter, then threw an interception in their second red zone opportunity in the third quarter. The Panthers got inside the 25 yard line early in the fourth quarter, but a pair of sacks backed the Panthers up outside of field goal range as the Panthers could not convert a 4th and 15 attempt.

West Virginia did not have a very good game offensively, either, as the Mountaineers only racked up 252 yards of total offense. The passing game was almost nonexistent as Adam Bendarik only completed 9 of 20 passes for 63 yards and an interception. Luckily, Jason Gwanltney stepped up and delivered 136 rushing yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. "Jason won the game for us along with our defense," explained Coach Frizzell. "It was a very hard game on the offensive side of the ball, but our defense made it hard for Pittsburgh to do anything offensively either.

Pittsburgh's only score came in the fourth quarter off of an 80 yard touchdown pass off of a blown coverage. West Virginia had a touchdown run each from Jason Gwanltney and Pernell Williams to get their 14 points.

    Code:

WOW!!! Very weird seeing you win the division with a 7-4 record and Louisville being 9-2. Great job on beating them and congrats. You should bold your place in the standings, it's hard to find sometimes just being italicized.

Yeah, it was quite a surprise to be honest. I thought UConn was going to win it, but they slipped and lost their final 4 games of the season to finish 7-4 (4-3) after once being 7-4 (4-0). Quite the choke job by the Huskies.

I'll use bold and italics from now on to mark my place in the standings!

Mountaineers Win First Annual "Friends of Coal Bowl"!!!
Mountaineers Find a Way to Win in the Snow

              N/R 15 -- (6-6)
              #21 32 -- (8-4)

              Morgantown, WV -
It has been 9 years since these 2 teams have battled on the football field. The last time the only 2 Division 1 football teams in the state of West Virginia teams met was all the way back in 1997. However, the signing of a deal which will have the teams play each other for the next 7 years.

West Virginia took command early as Adam Bendarik and Owen Schmitt hooked up for an 18 yard touchdown pass only 44 seconds into the game. That was followed by a safety off of a sack in the endzone on Marshall's first possession to make the score 9-0 early on. West Virginia would continue to dominate in the first half as they Mountaineers took a 26-7 lead at the halftime break.

The Mountaineer offense, after having a field day in the first half, struggled mightily in the second half as the light snow turned heavy and the field became slippery and muddy. West Virginia did not score a single touchdown in the second half, but Colby Jones did convert on field goals of 27 and 38 yards to score 6 second half points. Luckily, Marshall did not do better as the Thundering Herd only managed a single touchdown with a 2 point conversion.

The Mountaineers did not move the ball much through the air as they only managed 114 passing yards as the snow made the passing game very difficult. However, the Mountaineers maintained a steady offense by running the football often as the Mountaineer ran the ball 41 times for 142 yards. Jason Gwanltney and Owen Schmitt made up the bulk of the rushing yardage as the 2 amassed over 50 yards rushing each. "We tried to stick to the running game today due to the snow," explained Coach Frizzell as to why his team utilized the run so often. "We like to run a lot anyways, though. We did pass the ball 27 times, but most of those were short passes and screens as the visibility was too bad to manage much of a downfield passing game.

Marshall's 2 scores came off of passing plays of 71 and 63 yards, though both were relatively short tackles which turned in to big plays due to missed tackles due to the slippery positions. "We had a tough time keeping our footing defensively," commented West Virginia's defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel.

The Mountaineers also brought heavy pressure defensively as West Virgina recorded 4 sacks and knocked down Marshall's quarterback duo on just about every other pass attempt. This was a major factor in the 3 picks West Virginia's secondary recorded on the night.

The Mountaineers finish the regular season 8-4 (5-2) and play their final game of the 2006 season in front of the home fans in "Touchdown City", otherwise know as Morgantown, West Virginia. Now West Virginia will sit back and wait to see which BCS bowl the Mountaineers will be heading to as the Mountaineer won the tiebreaker to seize the Big East Title over Louisville and Pittsburgh, who also claimed 5-2 records in the Big East. However, West Virginia beat them both, giving the Mountaineers the title.

Mountaineers to Play Gamecocks in Sugar Bowl!!!

New Orleans, LA - The 2007 edition of the Nokia Sugar Bowl will feature the Big East Champions and the SEC Champions. The #20 West Virginia Mountaineers (8-4, 5-2) will certainly come in as the heavy underdogs against #12 South Carolina (10-2, 8-1) as Steve Spurier's team is loaded with talent. "It will take a lot to beat such a talented squad, but we managed to beat a loaded Michigan team in last year's Sugar Bowl, so don't count us out," commented Coach Frizzell.

South Carolina blew out the Alabama Crimson Tide 42-17 to win the SEC Championship Game and earn a spot in the Sugar Bowl. The Mountaineers will look to go 2-0 in their last 2 Sugar Bowls if they knock off the Gamecocks.

The game will be played on New Year's Day at 8:00 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on Fox and broadcast in full HD.

New Orleans, LA - South Carolina came into the game leading the nation in total offense. The Gamecocks were averaging over 500 yards of offense per game and 40 points per game. Those numbers were nearly cut in half tonight as the Gamecocks only mustered 20 points and 287 yards of offense against the mighty Mountaineers of West Virginia.

The game started very ugly. South Carolina won the toss and elected to receive the kickoff. After being stopped for no gain on the first 2 two plays of the game, the Gamecocks got a 25 yard pass right down the middle of the field. However, the ball was stripped by senior strong safety Eric Wicks, who stripped the ball. Jarvis Schneider immediately jumped on the ball and the Mountaineers gained possession. On the ensuing possession, Adam Bendarik found a wide open Rayshawn Bolden, but Bolden was stripped of the ball after the 28 yard reception as he fumbled the ball back to the Gamecocks. After stopping the Gamecocks again, Colby Jones was able to get a 30 yard field goal with two minutes left in the quarter to get the Mountaineers on the scoreboard. Jason Gwanltney waltzed into the endzone with 12 seconds left in the quarter to grab a 10-0 lead as the first quarter ended.

The Gamecocks would not quit, however, as they would score off a 42 yard passing play two minutes into the second quarter. After a Mountaineer turnover, South Carolina would kick a long 51 yard field goal to tie the game at 10. However, Jason Gwanltney would have none of that as he ran into the endzone off of a 28 yard carry to make the score 17-10. Colby Jones would follow that up with a 22 yard chip-shot with time expiring in the first half to make the score 20-10 at halftime.

The Mountaineer defense would continue their strong play in the second half as South Carolina only managed a field goal in the third quarter. Pernell Williams would run the ball in from 19 yards out with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter to give the Mountaineers a commanding 17 point lead. After a 23 yard South Carolina field goal, Jason Gwanltney would run in for his third field goal of the game to make the score 34-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Steve Spurrier must have gotten into his offense's face because the Gamecocks would score just 46 seconds into the fourth quarter to bring the game within 14 points. The Mountaineers would burn a lot of clock in the fourth, but had to punt the ball back to the Gamecocks with just under two minutes remaining. South Carolina was facing a tough 4th and 6 with only two-and-a-half minutes remaining when senior linebacker Kevin "Boo" McLee stepped in front of the pass and picked it off. He ran the ball back to the South Carolina 20 yard line, setting up Jason Gwanltney's fourth and final touchdown run of the game to put the Mountaineers up 41-20. South Carolina would drive right down the field as the Gamecocks go all the way inside the five yard line, but time expired before they were able to punch the ball in the endzone to achieve a more respectable score.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel was praised for his team's defense effort in the game. He responded, "We usually try to pressure the quarterback more by blitzing, but with South Carolina's powerful offense we realized that was too risky. So we sat back in a cover 2 man coverage and prevented the deep ball for the most part against a big play offense. South Carolina still managed 292 yards of passing, but we were able to prevent the big plays that they have made a living off of this year and that was they key to us winning this ballgame.

Jason Gwanltney's 200 rushing yards were the key for the Mountaineer offense today. He averaged 8.6 yards per carry on 23 carries and scored four touchdowns. "We juts handed the ball of to him and let him go to work," explained Coach Frizzell.

Coach Frizzell improves to 2-0 in BCS bowl games and 2-0 in the Sugar Bowl in his short two year tenure with the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers finish the season off at 9-4 (5-2) and are the Big East and Sugar Bowl Champions.
