What happened witht he recruiting class. You won the sugar bowl and couldn't anything better than a 3* recruit.
I don't like the Yankees, I like the Red Sox, I don't like the Lakers, I like the Celtics, I hate the Canadiens and I love the Bruins. Soccer is the best sport on Earth, but most Americans are too ignorant to realize it. I am American.

It was a disaster. I missed out of some big recruits in season and I think I aimed a little too high in the off-season. I should have went for more solid three and four star players, but went after five star players and ended up with a bunch of two star players. Lesson learned I suppose.

              West Virginia Mountaineers 2007 Preview

Morgantown, WV - The West Virginia Mountaineers enter the 2007 college football season after winning their second straight Sugar Bowl in Coach James Frizzell's first two seasons. However, things are not always as they seem. Critics have been very harsh about Frizzell's recent recruiting blunder that was the 2007 recruiting class. Concern has grown that Frizzell could be the latest edition of a Larry Coker, the Miami coach that brought his team to a National Championship in his first year there only to end his final year with a disappointing 7-6 year and was fired as a result. Coach Frizzell had a similar first year as the Mountaineers finished ranked #2 and were 11-1 and a perfect 7-0 in the Big East. However, the second year was not nearly as good as the Mountaineers struggled to a 3-2 out-of-conference record. However, the Mountaineers recovered and went on to their second straight outright Big East Title and their second straight Sugar Bowl win. The critics were silenced until Coach Frizzell brought in one of the most pathetic recruiting classes in all of college football.

This year the Mountaineers certainly field the most talented team in the last ten or so years. The Mountaineers' backfield is considered by most to be the most talented backfield in the entire nation as the backfield boasts six players rated over 88. Adam Bendarik will quarterback in the Mountaineers. Bendarik got the starting job even though Pat White has a higher overall rating. However, Coach Frizzell wants the proven Bendarik to start due to his big game experience (2 Big East Titles, 2-0 in BCS Games) and his pocket passing ability. White will see his fair share of playing time, however, as he will line up to run the option and maybe even throw a pass or two. Redshirt senior Dwayne Thompson will be the third string quarterback, but is certainly no slouch as he comes in rated 88.

Jason Gwanltney will be the key to a successful season. It is crucial that he surpasses the 1,500 yard barrier if the Mountaineers want to have a chance at a National Championship. Pernell Williams, a senior, will back Gwanltney up and is also a very fine player. Owen Schmitt is considered to be the best fullback in college football right now as the senior should get more carries this year and possibly rush the ball for 500 yards. Schmitt will also be a key blocker for Gwanltney, White, and Williams as well.

The wide receiver corps does not have any stars that stick out and is rather unexperienced, but does have a group of players. Every wide receiver is a sophomore or freshman. T.J. Mitchell and Mike Poiter look to be reliable targets for Adam Bendarik this season as the two combined for 64 receptions and 962 yards last season. Sam Monroe will line up at tight end and should also make an impact in the passing game.

The offensive line looks to be solid this year as every starter is rated an 80 or above. Junior John Bradshaw is certainly the most talented offensive lineman with a 90 overall rating as the 6'5, 313 pound right tackle should be a vital blocker this season.

The defensive line looks to be a strong point on this Mountaineer defense. Seniors Jason Karns and Pat Liebig will be the starting ends and will provide plenty of experience up front. In fact, the entire starting defensive line is made up of redshirt seniors as Keilein Dy.kes and Andrae Wright both weight over 289 pounds and will secure the middle. Wright technically will not start, though, as Jeff Casteel uses a 3-3-5 defense. However, he will see plenty of playing time as Casteel mixes it up with 4-2-5, Dime, and Nickel packages quite often.

The linebacking corps is rather mediocre with two redshirt seniors in Marc Magro and Bobby Hathaway leading the way. Redshirt freshman Lawrence Williams will be asked to step up as he will take over the right outside linebacker position.

The secondary looks to be a strong point on this Mountaineer defense. Marlon Bolden and Jarvis Schneider will be asked to step up as the pair of sophomores will be starting at cornerback. Schneider is a preseason 2nd team All-American and should be able to shore up the secondary well. Seniors Vaughn Rivers and Kris Tawney will also see action as third and fourth stringers at cornerback. Meanwhile, sophomore Jeff Cook will get the nod as the starting free safety and should make a major impact as he will use his speed to contain the deep ball. Redshirt senior Ridwan Malik is the star of the secondary as the impact player will make an impact at strong safety. Fellow senior Brad McClung will also start at strong safety.

The special teams unit also looks to be a strong point as senior Colby Jones returns. He has the ability to hit the 50 yard field goal consistently, but has shown a tendency to miss some chip-shots in the past. Scott Kozlowski will punt and should average over 43 yards per punt for a second year in a row.

West Virginia Survives Scare From Marshall
Mountaineers Outscore Marshall 17-3 in Fourth Quarter to Notch Win

Huntington, WV - Who would have thought that Marshall would put such a scare into the talent-laden Mountaineers? They did, however, as the Thundering Herd just missed pulling off the upset at Joan C. Edwards Stadium over the Mountaineers.

All was going as planned for the Mountaineers as they took a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter and looked to be rolling. Then came a disatrous combination. Jason Gwanltney broke his thumb and Mountaineers quarterback Adam Bednarik began throwing incomplete passes and the Mountaineers went scoreless during the next two quarters.

Marshall began to figures out the West Virginia defense in the third quarter as quarterback Bernard Morris completed a 10 yard pass to bring the Herd to within 4 points after a Bednarik interception. Marshall scored again one minute later as Morris notched his second touchdown pass of the afternoon.

Afterwards, Adam Bednarik was yanked after his poor performance. Bednarik only competed 9 of 23 (39%) passes for 97 yards. He did throw two touchdowns, but both were early on. Plus, he added an interception. In came junior speedster Pat White. White immediately led the Mountaineers into Marshall territory, somewhere they Mountaineers had not visited in almost a half of play. Though the Mountaineers were stopped, West Virginia's offense finally had shown a breath of life with White at the helms. The Mountaineers needed some offense as they were down 17-14.

Pat White's fourth quarter performance was memorable. Leading a defunct offense without the services of All-Big East halfback Jason Gwanltney. White got the entire offense on a roll. Owen Schmitt and Pernell Williams began pulling of Gwanltney-esque plays. White ended with 29 yards rushing and 75 passing yard, plus a touchdown as he led the Mountaineers to 17 fourth quarter points to avoid the collapse against the Herd.

Jason Gwanltney is expected to miss two weeks due to the broken thumb. During that time, fullback Owen Schmitt and backup halfback Pernell Williams will fill his place.

Head coach James Frizzell refused to answer who will be the Mountaineers' starting quarterback next week, saying, "It's a game-time decision."

                          Hokies Dominate Mountaineers in Morgantown
Brandon Ore Rushes for 173 Yards in Hokies Win

                          #08 42 -- (1-0)
                          #20 13 -- (1-1)

Morgantown, WV - Five. That is the number of quarterbacks the West Virginia Mountaineers used in this ballgame. Ever since Adam Bednarik, who started the game at quarterback for the Mountaineers, threw an interception on the third play of the game, the Mountaineers were playing "musical quarterbacks". One quarterback after another failed. It was so pathetic that Nate Sowers, the fifth string quarterback, entered the game with four minutes remaining. Ironically, Sowers drove the Mountaineers right down the field for their first touchdown of the game to make the score 42-13. It will be interesting to see if Sowers gets any playing time next week.

The turning point of the game came early in the third quarter as the Hokies were facing a difficult third down conversion up 14-6. The Hokies ran a trick play as Sean Glennon handed the ball of to Brandon Ore. Ore passed the ball to Glennon downfield and Glennon went on to score the 70 yard touchdown reception. That is the kind of day it was for the Mountaineers.

The game was so bad that the Mountaineers' player of the game was their kicker, Colby Jones, who was 2-2 on field goals for the day and 1-1 on extra points.

Another reason for the loss was the mass amount of turnovers committed by the Mountaineers. West Virginia committed a grand total of six turnovers in the game. The Mountaineers threw three interceptions (two by Bednarik, one by White) and four fumbles (three lost).

Brandon Ore was unstopable as the Hokie ran for 173 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries. The Mountaineers defense continually gave Ore huge, gaping holes to run through, not to mention Ore broke a total of 15 tackles on the day. "We must work on run defense," commented defensive coordinator. Really?

In addition, the Mountaineers lost starting left guard, Marlon Waller, for 12 weeks with a broken wrist. He will be missed along the offensive line.

In the last three games between these two rivals, the road team has won each game. We shall see if the Black Diamond Trophy returns to Morgantown after the Mountaineers visit the Hokies in Blacksburg next year.

One thing is for sure, the Mountaineers will be very glad to get star halfback Jason Gwanltney back next week. The Mountaineers' rushing attack was very mediocre today with not one player gaining over 32 yards rushing. That should change next week with Gwanltney back in. The question remains on who will be handing the ball off to him, however, as the quarterback situation is a complete and utter mess.

                              Team looks solid.

At first I was a little fired up that you put Boise State as a projected win , but then I noticed you have everyone but V.T. as a project win

Reading your legacy is making it tough on me to wait for 09. I am have tempted to start one up with 08

Well, Boise State was a projected win because...

                                West Virginia: B+ Rating
                                Boise State: B- Rating

Of course, we will be playing on the blue turf, so who knows what will happen!!!

I will be excited to see your Broncos dynasty (If you post it one here, of course).
