BOSTON, MA - Today, we have learned that the University of Boston Colonials will begin fielding a football team in the 2006 season. The school has previously never fielded a football team. Athletic director Michael Morris announced that the new football team would compete in division 1, most likely as an Independent. "We are proud to finally get a football field out there. This will surely help our reputation and we are excited to get underway. We are ready to give the people of Boston a team to cheer for!"
The school also will partner with the city of Boston to build Samuel Adams Field, which should open in the spring of 2006, just in time for the football season in fall. The stadium will be shaped like a bowl - think of the "Big House" - and will seat 74,000 spectators.
James Frizzell, a graduate of West Virginia University, was named head coach today as well. Frizzell has no prior head coaching experience at the collegiate level, but the 25 year old has had great success at the AAA level in West Virginia high school sports, leading his team to a state title last year. He stated, "I am happy to be part of this new team. I hope to get a team out on the field that can be competive and maybe even sprinkle a few championships in there."
Frizzell will fuction as the team's offensive and defensive coordinator. "I like to run the show," he joked.
The team will be built off of walk-ons and transfers from other schools and the three lower NCAA divisions.
Syraucse Handed NCAA's "Death Penalty"
SYRACUSE, NY - Oh, how the Orange have fallen. Once a prestigious program that won a national championship in 1959, the Orange have been handed the NCAA's Death Penalty.
NCAA Investigators have noted that the Orange have been luring recruits to the program by offering free money, drugs, alcohol, and also prostitution. The university has apparently been paying players and undisclosed amount of money in addition to the numerous recruiting violations.
The football program has decided to drop it's once proud football program after major reprocussions were placed upon the school, a move that shoked the Orange fateful. The school was to have numerous scholarships taken away and would have not been allowed to field a football team in the 2006 and 2007 seasons. The team would not have been allowed to play a home game until 2010.
This opens to door up for a possible new member of the Big East Conference. Several schools have been placed up for consideration, including East Carolina, Memphis, and Central Florida.
Boston Will Replace Syracuse in Big East
NEW YORK, NY - Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese announced that the Boston Colonials would play their inaugural season in the Big East Conference. The team will face an uphill battle, most likely, as it will be competing in one of the six major conferences right for the beginning, but Boston Athletic Director Michael Morris was very pleased that this opportunity presented itself.
Morris stated, "We certainly did not expect to be playing in a BCS conference in our first season, but we are blessed to receive this opportunity. All the right pieces fell into place; maybe we are destined for greatness."
