    Boston (2-9) @ Rutgers (5-5)

    Rutgers Upset by Boston!!!

PISCATAWAY, NJ - In their first year playing collegiate football, the Boston Colonials have seized their very first win in Big East conference play. The Colonials jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and held on for a gratifying 34-21 win over a Rutgers team that has slipped in Big East play. The Scarlet Knights were 4-1 in out of conference play, but have slipped to a disappointing 1-5 in conference play to drop to 5-6.

Boston's defense was superb in the first half, but Rutgers offense certainly didn't help the Scarlet Knight's cause. A crucial fumble in the red zone with the score knotted at zero in the second quarter set up a pair of field goals for Boston. The second field goal was followed by a Mike Teel pick by safety Jeff Smith. Smith returned the ball to the 10 yard line and Steven Harris punched the ball in from one yard out to make the score 13-0. Boston tacke on another touchdown off a 49 yard touchdown pass with 49 seconds remaining in the half to give them a 20 point halftime lead.

Rutgers picked up the pace in the second half, but could not come all the wat back, as the Scarlet Nights fell to the Colonials 34-21. Brian Leonard was sensational for Rutgers as he carried the ball for 160 yards and averaged 7.6 yards per carry. However, Mike Teel was less than stellar as the sophomore quarterback missed wide open receivers all night long.

"I am really proud of this team and how we were able to win our final game," said Coach Frizzell. "Everyone thought we were going to get blown out, but we showed them that this team can play respectable football when our defense chooses to show up. Our defense held them [Rutgers] scoreless until 1:23 left in the third quarter. I am glad we won this for the seniors."

Marques Prater, affectionately know by the Colonials faithful as the "pick-machine" had a surprisingly good game as he completed 77% of his passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns and, more importantly, zero interceptions.

                          2007 Season Preview

What you need to know about the offense:
This year's offense should be the strength of the team once again. Chad Kemp will return and hope to stay injury free for once. Eric Callahan, after missing 11 games last year due to an injury, will be Kemp's #1 target like he was supposed to be last year. Callahan could get 1,500 yards receiving if he performs as expected.

Steven Harris will start over last year's starter, Billy Sims, as Harris showed a lot of improvement during the spring. Harris will have a solid blocking fullback to run behind in Brian Johnson. However, the line is a big question mark for the offense and could be the key to the Colonial's being able to move the ball on the ground, something they struggled to do last year.

Star of the offense: Senior WR Eric Callahan
Player that has to step up and become a star: Junior HB Steven Harris
Unsung star on the rise: Andrew O'Brian
Best Pro Prospect: QB Chad Kemp
                          Top three all-star candidates:
                          1. Senior WR Eric Callahan
                          2. Senior QB Chad Kemp
                          3. Senior FB Brian Johnson
Strength of the offense: Passing game
Weakness of the offense: Running game

What you need to know about the defense:
Coming off a year in which the defense allowed over 52 points per game and was ranked last in the nation in many different statistical categories, the defense will have to improve this season if the Colonials hope to win enough games to go bowling. The defense was plain horrible last year and that will not be enough if the Colonials hope to win more than two or three games this year.

Greg Walker, Mark Moore, and Mike Buckles will be the top three cornerbacks this year and should provide a substantial improvement over last year's slew of horrible cornerbacks. The linebacking corpse looks better than last year's as well. In fact, the entire defense looks improved, but is it improved enough? That is the question being thrown around Boston these days.

Star of the defense: Sophomore CB Greg Walker
Player that has to step up and become a star: Sophomore RE Bruce Alston
Unsung player on the rise: Senior ROLB Steve Stewart
Best pro prospect: Wel...Sophomore CB Greg Walker if we have to pick one...
                          Top three all-star candidates:
                          1. Sophomore CB Greg Walker
                          2. Sophomore RE Bruce Alston
                          3. Senior ROLB Steve Stewart
Strength of the defense: Nothing really...
Weakness of the defense: Just about everything...

                          What the experts say:
The Boston Colonials will be improved over last season's debacle, but it will not show up on the box score as the Colonials' schedule and the Big East looks stronger this year. The Colonials must travel to South Bend to face Notre Dame and must also face a ranked Boise State squad and a decent Boston College squad as well. We think the Colonials will go 2-10 (0-7) again this year, but if their defense improves, they could do much better.
