Boston Bounces Back With Upset Over Cincinnati

BOSTON, MA - Some viewed this as a trap game for the Cincinnati Bearcats and they couldn't be more correct. Boston never trailed for the entire game and, though they did not dominate the game, Boston pretty much controlled the entire game and walked away with a somewhat surprising 31-21 victory and their sixth win of the year, which now makes them bowl eligible for the first time in school history.

Boston controlled the pace of the first half and lined up for a chip shot field goal on the left hash mark with three seconds left in the half. Jake Manning missed it and Boston went into halftime with a 10-0 lead instead of a 13-0 lead. Boston fumbled the opening kickoff in the second half. The fumble breathed some life into the Bearcats. Cincinnati scored on an eight yard touchdown pass by Dustin Grutza as a result. However, Boston was able to score two more touchdowns to make it 24-7 going into the fourth quarter. Though Cincinnati made a vailent fourth quarter comeback attempt, the margin was too large and the Bearcats fell victim to Boston.

Chad Kemp bounced back from two subpar weeks in a row with a 316 yard, three touchdown performance. He threw no interceptions and completed an eye-opening 23 of 25 pass attempts, which equates to 92%. And this was without Eric Callahan! Freshman wideout Jake Mitchell took Eric Callahan's place as star receiver, totaling 9 receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Mithcell seems to be a star in the making and he should be one of the best receivers in the country by his junior and senior years.

Boston faces a tough final three games with games at Louisville and Notre Dame and a game at home against South Florida. Though Boston is technically bowl eligible, another win would solidify their chance at a bowl as six win teams often miss bowls.

          Boston (6-3) @ #4 Louisville (8-1)

          Boston Shocks Fourth Ranked Louisville!!!

LOUISVILLE, KY - Though the stats looked pretty evenly matched between Louisville and Boston, one key stat stood out which ultimately decided the ballgame. Turnovers. Louisville had four compared to Boston's one. Turnovers played a huge role in this otherwise evenly matched game as Boston surprisingly came into Papa John's Cardinal Stadium and knocked off the fourth ranked Louisville Cardinals. This game was supposed to be an offensive shootout as both teams sported spectacular offenses, but it turned out to be a game of defense. This marks Boston's first win over a top 25 team in school history.

Boston got off to a good start when Eric Callahan, back from his injury which sidelined him for last week's Cincinnati game, returned the opening kickoff to midfield. Though Boston went three-and-out, Louisville's starting quarterback, Hunter Cantwell, coughed up a fumble while being sacked which gave Boston the ball inside the 15 yard line. Kemp completed a one yard touchdown pass to a wide open Everett Winston, Boston's rarely used third string tight end, and Boston found themselves leading the fourth ranked team in the country.

Boston found itself scoring another touchdown to go up 14-0 after Jake Mitchell took a crossing pattern 49 yards to the house. Louisville did not give up, though, as the Cardinals added 10 more points before the half, including a 51 yard field goal with time expiring in the first half. Still, Boston led 14-10.

Louisville received the opening kickoff and promptly fumbled the ball, giving Boston the ball inside the 20 yard line on a fumble for the second time of the day. Boston took advantage as Chad Kemp hooked up with Andrew O'Brian for an 11 yard touchdown pass to go up 21-10. Boston added a field goal with three minutes left in the third quarter to go up by two touchdowns.

The dagger came late in the third quarter when Hunter Cantwell was picked off again and Boston converted the turnover into Chad Kemp's fourth touchdown pass of the day. Boston found themself up 31-10 and the packed house that was Papa John's Cardinal Stadium stood in disbelief. Down 31-10 late early in th fourth quarter, Hunter Cantwell threw his second interception of the game on a fourth and goal play from the four yard line. The game was over. If Louisville could have converted that fourth down, it would have been a whole new ballgame with the score 31-17, but they did not and the game was essentially over as Boston ran out the clock to win their first game against a top 25 opponent in school history.

Coach Frizzell was dumped with Gatorade and the team pranced all over the field as the Louisville Cardinal fans slowly filed out of the stadium. Boston did have a 6-3 record, but being that they had lost three of their last four games, no one predicted the Colonials to beat Louisville. This is by far Boston's biggest win in school history and it was televised by ESPN on this beatiful Saturday afternoon.

One might notice that Chad Kemp only attempted 18 passes and only threw for 182 yards. Coach Frizzell noted that he would try to run the ball more in this game to keep his defense from tiring and to keep control of the game. His plan worked as Boston had a very balanced offense, putting up 170 rushing yards compared to 182 passing yards. Though his team did not put up flashy numbers, they beat the fourth ranked team in the country by three touchdowns, so I'd say it worked pretty well. The defense played well and Boston walked away with a huge win.

              Boston (7-3) @ Notre Dame (5-4)

              Nine...Yes, Nine...Turnovers Doom Boston

SOUTH BEND, IN - Notre Dame may be a hard place to play in due to the loud noise and the exciting atmosphere, but it certainly should not be enough to warrant nine turnovers. You read that right, nine turnovers. Boston simply could not hold on to the ball.

Boston started off the game with two fumbles on their first two possessions and found themselves down 14-0. After another turnover, Boston was down 24-7 at the half. Boston got within 24-14 after three quarters and was driving inside the five yard line in the fourth quarter when Chad Kemp was pick-sixed in a 14 point swing as Notre Dame was suddenly up by 17. After another four turnovers in the fourth quarter alone, Boston was doomed for good. Boston was outscored 35-0 in the fourth quarter.

"That was a quarter to forget forever," said Coach Frizzell. "That was simply a nightmare and I don't want to ever think about that again. We playe horribly. We held the advantae in total offense, but our nine turnovers compared to their one turnover doomed us. This was simply ridiculous and we better not have this happen again."

On a brighter note, Eric Callahan broke his own school record for receiving yards as he tallied 263 yards on 14 receptions.

Boston will look to redeem themselves in their final regular season game next week against South Florida in Boston. It will be senior day and Boston will be hungry for a win to get the taste of this loss out of their mouths.

Great dynasty man I'm still following, but will you please tell me...how in the WORLD did Memphis start the season 10-0 haha? Is that a typo maybe, 0-10 seems much more likely.

                      South Florida (5-5) @ Boston (7-4)

                      Boston Wins a Thriller!!!

BOSTON, MA - Back home after a crushing 59-14 defeat by the hands of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Boston got just what they were looking for, a win. Boston led early and led 21-10 at halftime. However, the second half was marked by sloppy tackling and poor defense on both sides of the ball as South Florida managed to roll up 25 points and Boston tallied three touchdowns.

However, the excitement began after South Florida scored on a 13 yard Macklin touchdown pass to make it 28-26. The two point conversion was successful and South Florida tied it up at 28 as the third quarter ended. Boston's defense continued to give up big plays as Macklin ran in from seven yards out with four and a half minutes left in the game to give South Florida a 35-28 advantage. Boston answered, however, as Chad Kemp threw a 27 yard rocket to Eric Callahan to tie the game at 35 with three minutes remaining. South Florida would not give up, though, and made their way all the way to the 28 yard line and faced a third and nine with a minute and a half left in the ballgame. Everyone expected South Florida to convert as they had so often, but they surprisingly did not. Earlier in the drive South Florida scored, but the touchdown was called back for holding as the Bulls were prevously inside the 20 yard line looking for a chip shot field goal. Anyways, Cedric Hamilton, South Florida's kicker, lined up for a 45 yard field goal. He made it, but a flag was thrown for holding and the ball was moved back to the 38 yard line. The crowd was relieved. So, the 45 yard field goal became a 55 yarder. Hamilton lined up for the 55 yard field goal and hit it right down the middle...but it was short by two yards!!!

Boston got the ball back and drove down the field. While on the Bulls' 45 yard line, Chad Kemp threw a screen pass to Eric Callahan, who took the pass and saw some daylight, using his blinding speed to outrun everyone and put Boston up 42-35 with only 33 seconds remaining. South Florida got the ball back and, facing a fourth down with eight seconds left, converted a huge play, getting them to the Boston 25 yard line with one second left, one last chance. With the entire Boston secondary camping out in the endzone to prevent a touchdown, Macklin found a wide open receiver down the middle, but he was stopped 11 yards short of the goal line and the Boston Colonials walked away with an exciting 42-35 victory and move to a surprising 8-4 on the season!

In their final home games of their careers, Chad Kemp and Eric Callahan put on a show for the fans on Senior Day. Kemp completed 27 of 33 passes and threw for 407 yards, tying the school record for passing yards that he set last week against Notre Dame. He threw for five touchdowns, as well, and made one mistake on a high pass which ended up being an interception. Eric Callahan caught nine passes for 233 yards and four...yes, four...touchdowns.

"Eric [Callahan] and Chad [Kemp] were great today," an emotional Coach Frizzell said. "Our seniors have played for a lot and it's great to see them win on Senior Day. I hope we can win our bowl game, too, so they can go out as winners."

Boston finishes with a winning record in Big East play (4-3) in only their second season of football. Boston has accomplished a lot this season and hopes to accomplish more with a bowl game win. Now, the Colonials will wait and see what bowl game they will be slotted in and whether Eric Callahan, the sensational Boston receiver, wins the coveted Heisman Trophy.

Nope, they were 10-0 believe it or not. Here is their scores:

                        W 31-24 at Maryland (7-5)
                        W 52-0 vs. Morgan State
                        W 42-0 vs. Dartmouth
                        W 34-33 at Florida International (2-8)
                        W 31-21 vs. Southern Methodist (2-10)
                        W 31-14 at Central Florida (3-9)
                        W 62-21 at East Carolina (5-6)
                        W 38-14 at Tulane (6-6)
                        W 31-14 vs. Alabama-Birmingham (2-9)
                        W 51-21 at Rice (5-7)
                        L 21-31 at #24 Southern Mississippi (10-1)
                        W 17-7 vs. Marshall (3-8)

                        Record: 11-1 (7-1)

So...they did not exactly play a tough schedule as they beat exactly ONE team with a winning record all year (Maryland, 7-5), but they were 10-0 at one point!
