I only have 65 players on the roster, so I figured I might as well keep them all since I don't have the maximum of 70.

                  Boston Colonials 2008 Season Preview

Boston went 9-4 last season and went to a bowl game for the first time in school history. They became the first school to win a bowl game in their first three years in Division 1-A in the BCS era. They knocked off a talented UCLA team in the Sun Bowl. The question flying around in Boston these days is...can these guys do it again?

The chances are that the Colonials will not have the same success as last season. For one, Chad Kemp and Eric Callahan are gone. So is Andrew O'Brian and a host of linebackers. The team looks improved on the defensive side of the ball, but the offense is not as talented as last year.

Another reason is that the Colonials' schedule is quite difficult. It starts with a home date against a pesky UCF squad. Then the Colonials must travel to Boston College, host #21 Texas Christian, and play UCLA in the Rose Bowl as a grudge match which was signed this offseason. UCLA will travel to Boston next year as part of the two year deal. Then the Colonials will have to navigate a Big East schedule which is certainly no cakewalk. The Colonials will have four away games and only three home games in Big East play and overall will play five home games compared to seven away games. The Colonials will have to travel to South Bend to take on Notre Dame in their final out-of-conference game on November 22nd before taking on 19th ranked Louisville on Senior Day at home.

Boston also hopes to return to more of a west coast offense this year after converting to a spread last year due to a weak offensive line. The offensive line is not spectacular this year, either, but Coach Frizzell likes to run the ball between the tackles and snapping the ball under center gives him the best chance to do that.

With Chad Kemp, Eric Callahan, and others gone, Coach Frizzell has decided that his team would run the ball more this year with the wide receiver corps being fairly mediocre this year. So I would not expect a 4,000 yard passing year out of senior Marques Prater like Chad Kemp had last year. Prater is known to be a pick-machine from his playing time in his first two years as a backup, so if he comes out and starts throwing picks again, don't be surprised to see sophomores Matt Mayfield or Terrance Leak enter the game. Prater was very good in spring practice, though, so he should be fine as he showed considerable improvement.

After Steven Harris stole the starting job from his last year, Billy Sims has seized the start job back after an amazing spring. However, Sims is on a short leash as Coach Frizzell wants his runningbacks to be productive this year. Boston could run a runningback by committee in actuality, as all five of Boston's halfbacks are rated 80 and over with Billy Sims at an 84. Every halfback has their strengths, so we could see a host of guys getting carries out of the backfield this year. Redshirt freshman Larry Andrews will be Boston's fullback, but he is mediocre at best and probably won't see much playing time.

The wide receiver corps is rather mediocre with Jake Mitchell being the best wideout at only an 80 overall. He had over 610 receiving yards last year and could near 1,000 this year if things go as planned. Joe Harley will be on the opposite side of the field while true freshman Jeff Miller and sophomore Terrell Colston will play the slot. Jared Cummings will look to have another good year after having a very efficient year last year at tight end.

The offensive line is the weak spot of this offense and, plain and simple, is just not that good. That does not bode well for the running game Coach Frizzell hopes to establish this year, but we shall see how things work out. Chip Simmons is a very good center and will hope to follow in the footsteps of Ben Stegall. The rest of the line is mediocre, however, and it will be interesting to see how this unit pans out.

The defensive line has some talent, but very little depth with only six defensive lineman on the roster. Sergio Wilson, a transfer from last season, will start at defensive tackle and should be a force. Bruce Alston has started since he was a freshman and now the junior hopes to have a breakout year. True freshman Richard Hall starts at the other side of the line and looks like he could develop into a heck of a lineman.

The defensive line has plenty of depth, but not much talent. Clay Parks, a four star prospect from this year's class, will start right away at middle linebacker and will be the best linebacker in school history. Donny Ryan, Byron Kirby, and John Bowman will man the other linebacker positions. If Clay Parks can perform, he could make this whole unit better.

After being the worst part unit on the team the first two years, the secondary looks to be a strong point on this team this year. Trasfer Ian Hayes and sophomore Mark Moore will start at cornerback with Greg Walker and Mike Buckles backing them up. Rodney Hill looks to be a future star at corner, but will redshirt this year. Transfer Tom Lott will start at strong safety and is a stud. He should be able to carry this secondary to new heights this year. Jeff Smith will start at free safety and has plenty of experience as he enters his senior year as a three year starter.

The special teams unit looks to be mediocre. Jake Manning is a decent kicker, but for this first time, he will not punt this year. Junior walkon Caleb Hughes performed decently in spring practice, so he will seize the punting job this year. Jake Manning will also kick the ball off. Billy Sims will return kicks and punts. Steven Harris will join him as a fellow kick returner. Center Chip Simmons will play long snapper this year.

The Schedule: As we already mentioned, the schedule is much harder this year. The out of conference schedule includes trips to Boston College, UCLA, and Notre Dame. Also, the Colonials will host 21st ranked Texas Christian. The Big East looks better this year, too, so it could be tougher to navigate through the Big East schedule this year.

Best Offensive Player: Senior QB Marques Prater. He may have been a pick-machine in the past, but he sure has a lot of talent. The questions remains whether he has his head in the game.

Best Defensive Player: Senior SS Tom Lott. The transfer should anchor the strong Boston secondary.

Key Player to a Successful Season: Senior QB Marques Prater. If he doesn't throw interceptions, this team could be good.

The season will be a success if... The Colonials finish in the top half of the Big East and get to a bowl game.

Key Game: 10/2 at #5 West Virginia. This is Boston's first conference game and knocking off the Mountaineers and their 30 game regular season winning streak would be huge. West Virgina has won 21 consecutive Big East games as well.

                            Golden Knights Upend Boston

BOSTON, MA - UCF is one of the better mid-major teams out there, but not scoring a single touchdown against the Golden Knights is a bit embarrassing for a team that finished 9-4 and third in the Big East last season. Yet that's just what Boston did as the Colonial offense could not get into the endzone against the Golden Knights' defense.

Boston actually outgained UCF, but most of those yards occurred on the Colonials' end of the field as Boston had trouble generating much offense past midfield.

The Colonials were very much in this game and held a slim 6-3 lead at halftime with each team unable to get into the endzone. However, UCF scored on their opening possession of the third quarter and went up 10-6. Boston had many chances to go up, but a fumble and a fourth down stop in the fourth quarter were daggers to this Boston team and allowed UCF to put the icing on the cake with another touchdown to go up 17-6 with a minute left.

"Our offense was pretty bad out there," complained Coach Frizzell. "I really liked our defensive intensity and we played a heck of a game on the defensive side of the ball, but our offense was pathetic, plain and simple. We'll be doing a lot of drills with the offense this week We can't have this happen again."

Pathetic it was. The Colonials better shape up on offense before they face the likes of Boston College, Texas Christian, UCLA, and West Virgina over the next four weeks.
