Mountaineers Give Colonials a Reality Check

BOSTON, MA - Both teams came in 5-0 and undefeated. The difference? One team came in ranked #1 in the nation with far superior talent, speed, and two Heisman candidates in Pat White and Steve Slaton in the backfield. Add to that the #1 defense statistically in the nation which the Mountaineers possessed and you have all the makings for a blowout.

Boston was held to a season-low 14 points as West Virginia's 3-3-5 defense hampered Boston's running game. Boston only had six rushing yards on 20 carries. That is pathetic.

Chad Kemp passed the ball well, as usual, passing for over 350 yards, but the Mountaineers' big play ability ultimately cost Boston the victory.

Next up for Boston is a date with Pittsburgh in Heinz Field followed by home dates with a mediocre Rutgers team and a very good Cincinnati team. Boston can hopefully win one of those to get their sixth win, which will make the Colonials bowl eligible for the first time in school history.

Man, the length of those runs looks like the Fiesta Bowl against the Sooners.

            Yes!

It was painful to play against, though, as was the game I am about to post against Pittsburgh...

              Pittsburgh Mauls Boston

PITTSBURGH, PA - After starting the season 5-0, Boston has now lost it's last two games in blowout fashion. Pittsburgh came into the game 5-1, as well, as the Panthers' only loss was to the Cincinnati Bearcats, who were 5-0 coming into this weekend. This was a highly anticipated game as neither team wanted to gain that fateful second loss in conference play.

Pittsburgh got off to a quick start and led 28-7 at halftime by virtue of big plays and Chad Kemp's first bad game of the year. Kemp threw two first half interceptions and looked confused and dazzled by the large crowd and the loud noise coming from the packed house at Heinz Field. Pittsburgh made a living off of big plays all day long and scored from 77, 55, 47, and 61 yards out in the first half as Pittsburgh was running all over the Colonials.

The second half began with a defense stop by the Colonials followed by Chad Kemp's third interception of the day. Kemp was pulled by Coach Frizzell as a result. In came senior third stringer quarterback Paul Mitchell. Mitchell has never got much playing time, but has always done pretty well in the few opportunities he has had. Coach Frizzell opted to bring him in since he figured to not get rattled by the noise. The replacement was a success as the Colonials scored at the end of the third quarter to breathe a bit of life into Boston. The score made it 28-14 with one quarter remaining. However, Boston would not score again and would let Pittsburgh roll off 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to lose the game 42-14. Paul Mitchell did have a great game, though, completing 14 of 20 passes for 155 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions.

"Mitchell certainly impressed me," explained Coach Frizzell, "but Kemp is still our starter. For whatever reason, he did not have it today and just was not any good. However, it was not all his fault as our receivers also dropped seven passes of their own. It's disheartening to see your receivers drop that many passes and it can certainly take you out of your rythm."

Boston will hope to recover next week as the Colonials will host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, who upset Connecticut this weekend.

                      Rutgers (3-4) @ Boston (5-2)

                      Rutgers Blows Out Boston

BOSTON, MA - After starting their second season in school history 5-0, the Boston Colonials are in a freefall now as they lose their third straight blowout in a row to fall to 5-3 (1-3).

"We are in a flat out freefall and it seems like there is nothing we can do," explained Coach Frizzell. "Anything and everything that can go wrong is going wrong and it's definitely not pretty."

A bunch of recruits were invited to today's game and I would doubt that they were too impressed with the results.

Even with Ray Rice out with an injury, Rutgers was dominant from the beginning, scoring 10 points in the first quarter before returning a Chad Kemp fumble 59 yards for a touchdown to make it 17-0. Rutgers scored on a 58 yard Mike Teel touchdown pass to go up 24-0 before Boston scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the first half to get within 10 at halftime.

From there on, it was all Rutgers and Boston's offense took a vacation as the Colonials did not score a single point in the second half. Turnovers and lack of decision making destroyed any offense that the Colonials had going in the second half. In fact, Coach Frizzell made some very boneheaded decisions in the first half by going for it on fourth down twice at midfield, both of which turned into Rutgers' scores.

Another sad note is that Heisman candidate Eric Callahan was injured late in the game and will miss the Cincinnati game next week. He should be back for the Louisville game, but, being that he is a very crucial part of Boston's offense, this could be a very significant problem next week.

Boston faces a relatively tough schedule from here on out as the Colonials host Cincinnati next week. Then they travel to Louisville and Notre Dame before coming home to play South Florida in the final game of the 2007 season. It is very possible that the Colonials may not win a single one of those games the way things are going now. It would be horrible to start the season 5-0 and then lose every game thereafter to finish 5-7. That looks like a real possibility for Boston though.

Yes, it has been a tough stretch. Surprisingly, I still have a chance to get four or five in-season recruits. I should at least get three unless something horrible happens...which could happen.
