Mountaineers win 31-13 over fifth-ranked Georgia Tech

Miami, FL (AP) - The third-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (12-0, 7-0 Big East) capped off a perfect season today with a convincing 31-13 victory over the fifth-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (12-1, 8-1 ACC).

Jeff Mullen moved the offense to more of a spread option offense as it was during the Rodriguez era as Noel Devine was back and it worked quite swell. Devine, despite being doubtful coming into the game, ran for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

However, the key to the game was the play of the Mountaineers' defense. West Virginia is known for its stout run defense and we certainly saw more of that today as Georgia Tech was held to only 168 yards rushing, far below their season average.

"The key was definitely the play of our defense," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart, who improves to 4-0 in bowl games in his career. "[Defensive coordinator] Jeff Casteel has had those boys ready to play all year long and today was no different."

The key play came with only 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Bradley Starks took a handoff for 32 yards and a touchdown to put the Mountaineers up 24-7. Georgia Tech fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Noel Devine ran in from 19 yards out with the third quarter ending. And just like that, it was 31-7 and the game was essentially over.

The Mountaineers have to feel disappointed that they didn't have a chance to play for the BCS Title, but this win will certainly make the AP voters think. A split title perhaps? Unlikely, but we shall see.

Yep. I should be able to get some #1 media votes, too, hopefully.

Yeah, it was disappointing for sure, especially since I played a pretty impressive non-conference schedule for nothing apparently. Oh well, hopefully, I'll get another chance before this dynasty is over.

                            2011 Season Preview
West Virginia looks to repeat as Big East Champions

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE OFFENSE:
The Mountaineers look to return to a more spread attack this season after being more pro-style for the last two seasons. "We need to take advantage of Coley [White] and others' speed this year," offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen said. "However, we're still going to throw the ball a good deal and run the ball up the guy; we just want to do a little bit of everything this year and keep our opponents off guard."

Junior Coley White will start at quarterback for this young Mountaineers team. Stud freshman Cedric Duckett will be redshirted this year, but he could pressure White for playing time next year. Ronnie Bullock will back White up.

Noel Devine is gone, but Terence Kerns will step right in and look to have a good year. The 90 rated junior has a bevy of skills and is especially adept to breaking tackles. He has deceptive speed, though, too. Mark Rodgers should also see significant playing time, as well. Ricky Kovatch had a great year last season at fullback and will look to continue his success this season and will likely get more chances to succeed this year.

Jock Sanders is gone, so other receivers will have to step up. Bradley Starks looks primed for a great year, but he has company in sophomore Dennis Dunn, who had a great year last season as a freshman. Tyler Urban, the tight end, had a good year last year catching the football and will likely see even more touches this season.

The offensive line is a bit iffy, but center Gino Gradkowski can hopefully guide this group through the tough season. Three seniors start on the line in Don Barclay, Gino Gradkowski, and Josh Jenkins, but newcomers Larry Murphy and and Dennis Christian are unproved.

Star of the offense: Junior HB Terence Kerns
Player that has to step up and become a star: Junior QB Coley White
Unsung star on the rise: Sophomore WR Dennis Dunn
Best pro prospect: Junior HB Terence Kerns
Strength of the offense: A very good backfield a good crop of receivers.
Weakness of the offense: Offensive line's inexperience.

                            Starters:
QB Coley White, JR - 89
HB Terence Kerns, JR - 90
FB Ricky Kovatch, JR - 88
WR Bradley Starks, SR - 91
WR Dennis Dunn, SO - 86
TE Tyler Urban, SR - 89
LT Don Barclay, SR - 87
LG Larry Murphy, FR - 81

RG Josh Jenkins, SR - 88
RT Dennis Christian, SO - 77

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE DEFENSE:
The defense loses nine of 11 starters from last year's team, which was outstanding at defense. Six of the 11 starters this season are sophomores or freshmen.

The defense certainly looks like it should go through some rough patches this year. However, seniors Robert Sands and Najee Goode will look to lead this young defense.

The defense looks somewhat talented. There's just not much in the way of experienced players.

Star of the defense: Senior FS Robert Sands
Player that has to step up and become a star: Senior MLB Najee Goode
Unsung star on the rise: Senior MLB Najee Goode
Best pro prospect: Senior MLB Najee Goode
Strength of the defense: Young talent.
Weakness of the defense: Lack of experience.

                            Starters:
DE Rufus Tyler, FR - 73
DE Craig Edwards, FS - 77
DT Julian Miller, SR - 93
OLB Carlos Gonzales, SO - 87
MLB Najee Goode, SR - 89
OLB Ryan Childress, SO - 78
CB Albert King, SO - 84
CB Jarvis Montgomery, FR - 76
FS Robert Sands, SR - 91
SS Derek Knight, SR - 86
SS Eain Smith, SR - 74

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS:
Montrell Godrey will once against handle kicks and punts while Emmanuel Melton handles kickoffs. Godfrey did not miss a single field goal last year, but he didn't particuarly try any long ones either. Emmanuel Melton will handle kicks over 50 yards due to his stronger leg. Bradley Starks and Dennis Dunn will return kickoffs and punts.

                            Starters:
                            K Montrell Godfrey, SO - 83
                            P Montrell Godfrey, SO - 83

good luck super in ur quest for the national title... A similar thing happened to West Virginia in my dynasty if you follow it. WVU finished 13-0, won the Big East and won the Orange Bowl but wasn't even in the Top 5 of the BCS Standings. Pretty crazy and it sucks for them. it's like the Big East became a mid-major or something...

Devine got 2nd team all-american too... Just thought i'd let you know haha

good luck in ur next season though... kerns is gonna have a big year i'm feeling!

Looks like the offense won't have a problem scoring at all this year. The way the D looks, which reminds me of the real life D, way to young so you are going to need all the points. Anyway, good luck I would like to see you win a national title.
