Mountaineers Are Always Free!!! (NCAA 09)

    Mountaineers Are Always Free!!!
    English for
"Montani semper liberi", the West Virginia State motto.

    Game: NCAA Football 09
    System: Xbox 360
    Difficulty: Heisman
    Quarters: Seven Minutes
    Sliders: Mudtiger's with slight modifications
    Rosters: DKrause1971

Alright, I caved in and bought NCAA 09 finally ... and I am pleasantly surprised. It's a fun game. It may have its flaws, but it's fun and that's what matters. I'll be playing with WVU. I thought about Connecticut or Cincinnati, but decided in the end to use WVU (my favorite team) and use the hiring of Bill Stewart to sort of play the role of the dynasty story.

I hope not to do too well with WVU or slider modifications will be made. I'll try to implement what Mullen is trying to do at WVU right now. We'll see how the offense does in cyber land (hopefully better than real life, LOL!!!).

      2008 Season Preview
With new coach and departing defense, Mountaineers hope to reload, not rebuild

      OFFENSIVE PREVIEW
The offense is anchored by the leader of the team, senior star quarterback Patrick White. Experienced backup Jarrett Brown could also see some action at quarterback. Devine will become the featured back this year and should see 15-20 touches a game, sharing the load with Mark Rodgers and Jock Sanders, who will also see action at the wide receiver position. Terrance Kerns will redshirt. Along with Sanders, Arlic Arnett and Dorrell Jalloh hope to make an impact, though the receiving corps is rather mediocre. True freshman Tyler Urban will see action at tight end. All five members of the offensive line are rated 82 or higher and three are rated 88 or higher as the offensive line hopes to carry this team.
      Starters:
QB Pat White, SR - 92
HB Noel Devine, SO - 88
FB Will Johnson, SO - 78
WR Jock Sanders, SO - 82
WR Arlic Arnett, JR - 80
TE Tyler Urban, FR - 76
LT Ryan Stancheck, SR - 90
LG Greg Islander, JR - 90
      C Mike Dent, SR - 88
RG Jake Figner, SR - 86
RT Selvish Capers, SR - 82

      DEFENSIVE PREVIEW
The defense is led by senior middle linebacker Reed Williams, who was the Defensive MVP of last year's 48-28 Sugar Bowl win over Oklahoma. Joining him are two very good linebackers in JT Thomas and Mortty Ivy, as the linebacking corps is considered by many to be the best in the Big East. The defensive line isn't impressive, but star sophomore Scooter Berry hopes to make an impact after a huge season last year. The secondary is exteremly inexperienced with only Quinton Andrews as the dependable guy as of now. He is joined at the other safety position in West Virginia's 3-3-5 defense by Note Sowers, the former quarterback. The Mountaineers will start a true freshman at free safety in Robert Sands.
      Starters:
LE Scooter Berry, SO - 86
RE Pat Liebig, SR - 82
DT Chris Neild, SO - 80
LOLB KR Thomas, SO - 87
MLB Reed Williams, SR - 90
ROLB Mortty Ivy, SR - 89
CB Ellis Lankster, SR - 81
CB Brandon Hogan, SO - 78
FS Robert Sands, FR - 78
SS Quinton Andrews, SR - 90
SS Nate Sowers, JR - 82

      SPECIAL TEAMS PREVIEW
Pat McAfee will handle both kicking and punting duties again this year after a successful season last year as McAfee has a strong leg and good accuracy. He will also take on the kickoff duties. Jock Sanders and Noel Devine will return punts while Ellis Lankster will return punts for the Mountaineers. Mike Dent is the team's long snapper.
      Starters:
      K Pat McAfee, SR - 83
      P Pat McAfee, SR - 85
KR Jock Sanders, SO - 99
KR Noel Devine, SO - 99
PR Ellis Lankster, SR - 91
KOS Pat McAfee, SR - 83

                Rain Dance
Mountaineers take rainy game in Greenville

Greenville, NC (AP) - After the East Carolina Pirates (0-1, 0-0 C-USA) got within 29-13 with just under five minutes remaining, play making returner Jock Sanders made a big play for the #7 West Virginia Mountaineers (1-0, 0-0 Big East) as the sophomore took back the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to make the score 36-13 and essentially put the game away.

The Mountaineers controlled the game from start to finish in the rainy conditions as the Mountaineers scored on the opening kickoff.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen unleashed the full offense today as Noel Devine carried the ball 26 times for 155 yards and a touchdown. Pat White did not record a single run last week, but today the senior rushed for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns, one in which White made several jukes to break off an amazing 34 yard touchdown run, on 13 carries. He also passed for 121 yards.

"We pretty much played the game we wanted to on offense," said Mullen. "We ean the ball 47 times compared to 21 passes, and we'd like to maintain somewhere around a 2:1 run-pass ratio which we accomplished today."

The Mountaineers will next take on the Colorado Buffaloes in Boulder, a game which will likely prove to be the Mountaineers' toughest test this season.

                    Boulder Blues
Mountaineers upset by Colorado at high altitudes

Boulder, CO (AP) - Last year, the Colorado Buffaloes (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) upset the undefeated third-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 27-24 in Boulder in a shocking upset. The magic would reappear once again in Boulder as the Buffaloes upset the sixth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (2-0, 0-0 Big East) in a 34-19 victory on a majestic Thursday night.

Despite outgaining the Buffaloes 345 yards to 285 yards, three Pat White interceptions devestated the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers were behind 21-13 and were driving early in the fourth quarter to tie the game, but Pat White threw a red zone interception and that was all she wrote. West Virginia would score once more, but fail on the two point conversion to make it 28-19. The Mountaineers got down inside the 10 yard line with a minute remaining in hopes of scoring and getting the onside kick, but Pat White threw his third and final interception of the day, a pick-six which made it 34-19 Buffaloes.

The Mountaineers had to throw the ball 49 times in the game to keep pace after falling behind 14-3 early on, something that is certainly not what the Mountaineers hope to do.

"We'd like to throw the ball 20 to 25 time per game, not 49, but due to falling behind early, we had to do it," explained offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen.

The Mountaineers only gained 118 yards on the ground, including only 57 yards on 18 carries for Noel Devine as the Colorado defense stuffed the run all day long.

"This certainly wasn't the result we were hoping for, but we competed well in a tough road game against a Colorado team that will likely be ranked next week," said West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart.

Cody Hawkins had an efficient day for the Buffaloes as he completed 16 of 22 passes for 169 yards, two touchdowns, and one pick.

The Mountaineers will hope to rebound in their first home game against an FBS opponent next week in the Friends of Coal Bowl against Marshall.

                          Mountaineers Bounce Back
Mountaineers stay undefeated all-time versus Marshall

Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (2-1, 0-0 Big East) sported the yellow-topped uniforms today as they prevailed 40-9 over a Marshall (3-1, 2-0 C-USA) squad off to a surprising 3-1 start. The Mountaineers now lead 8-0 in the all-time series over their in-state rivals and 3-0 since the Friends of Coal Bowl started back in 2006.

The Thundering Herd led 3-0 after a quarter of play and kept it close throughout the first half, going into halftime only facing a one touchdown deficit with the score 10-3 Mountaineers.

However, the West Virginia play makers exploded in the second half with Devine and Sanders having huge games en route to a 40-9 rout of Marshall.

Devine rushed for 103 yards on 21 carries, but also made a huge impact in the passing game where he caught four passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns. He took one pass 57 yards to the house off a screen pass to give the Mountaineers a 17-3 lead early in the third quarter. Jock Sanders also made a huge impact as he carried the ball only 10 times for 104 yards and scored a 42 yard touchdown run in which he took a carry the was stopped for a loss and reversed fields, outrunning the Marshall defenders for a 42 yard touchdown.

Pat White also had a great game as he completed 18 of 21 passes for 198 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions after last week's three pick debacle. Most of his passes were of the dink and dunk variety, but an 85% completion rate is still pretty impressive.

"We came out and played well today," explained Mountaineer head coach Bill Stewart. "We got off to a slow start, but we got it going in the second half. Our defense was attacklin' and our playmakers on offense were moving the ball!"

Marshall had 311 yards of total offense, but only scored one touchdown and a field goal as the Mountaineer defense did a great job of bending, but not breaking.

"I really think this defensive unit is starting to gel," explained defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. "They stepped up in some big situations today and, even though we allowed 311 yards of offense, we only allowed nine points and that's the only stat that matters. We don't care how many yards we give up as long as we keep the opponents off the scoreboard."

The Mountaineers will begin Big East Conference play next week against a quality opponent in Rutgers next week in Morgantown. The Mountaineers will take on Syracuse the following week before hosting Auburn in perhaps the most anticipated game of the season.

Morgantown, WV (AP) - Mike Teel did it again. Teel, often known for being a good quarterback that sometimes makes some hasty decisions, was his usual self today. Teel threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns, but a horrible decision in his own territory with one minute left sent the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-1, 0-0 Big East) home packing and handed the 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (3-1, 0-0 Big East) with their first conference win of the year.

Mike Teel was superb all day as the Mountaineers fell behind 21-6 early on as Teel moved the ball seemingly at will in the first half. But his late interception is what he will be known for, for throwing away the game.

"[Teel] didn't make a good throw," Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said, "but you can't place the blame all on his shoulders. He was spectacular out there today and was the reason we were able to score 38 points." But the fans only remember the bad and he'll be remembered for throwing the game away with an erratic throw.

Meanwhile, West Virginia ran for 303 yards on the ground and didn't commit a single turnover in this prime time game. Noel Devine put on a show as he ran for a career-high 180 yards and a touchdown on 32 carries. Jock Sandesr added 62 yards and a touchdown while Pat White added another 65 yards to the rushing total.

"The run was working well, so we stuck with it," said offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen. "They say, 'If it a'int broke, don't fix it,' and that's what we did today."

The Mountaineers will take on lowly Syracuse next week before hosting the Auburn Tigers on a Thursday night prime time game.

                              West Virginia Topples Syracuse
Game closer than expected, but Orange still fall

Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (4-1, 1-0 Big East) had a lot more trouble than expected knocking off the struggling Syracuse Orange (2-3, 0-1 Big East) on Homecoming in Morgantown.

The Orange played a perfect game and nearly had enough to knock off the heavily favored Mountaineers. However, when push came to shove, the Mountaineers were far more talented and walked away with a 28-20 win.

Syracuse gained 355 yards of total offense compared to West Virginia's 360 yards and Andrew Robinson passed for 241 yards against West Virginia's mediocre secondary, but it wasn't enough as Pat White and Noel Devine both had fine games.

Devine ran for 125 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries; that's 8.9 yards per carry. Pat White added another 60 yards on the ground on nine carries and also passed for 126 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

"We just weren't all there today," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "Coach Robinson coached his team very well in this game, but we just had more speed and talent and were able to pull out the win. You have to hand it to Syracuse's coaching staff and players."

Perhaps the Mountaineers were looking ahead to their primetime mactchup against Auburn in two weeks, but this team better be looking better then if it hopes to put up much of a fight against the Tigers.
