Hitting Their Stride
West Virginia dominates Colorado en route to 26-7 victory
Morgantown, WV (AP) - The last time #23 West Virginia (2-0, 0-0 Big East) and Colorado (0-1, 0-0 Big Twelve) met, it was a 34-19 victory for the Buffaloes in Boulder. This year, the Mountaineers were having none of that.
The game was close throughout most of the first half, but Bradley Starks caught a 10 yard pass for a touchdown just before halftime to make the score 17-7. Though that was the final touchdown of the game for either team, Scott Kozlowski added three more field goals for the Mountaineers as the 'Eers won by 19 points, the amount of points West Virginia scored in their trip to Boulder last season.
Jarrett Brown played a full game for the Mountaineers and played very efficiently. He only had 103 yards passing and one touchdown pass, but he made some huge throws. He completed 15 of 23 passes and didn't turn the ball over, which is a huge plus.
"Having Jarrett back was huge," said West Virginia offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen. "Jarrett didn't put up huge numbers today, but we didn't ask him to do too much. We didn't really throw at all in the second half since we had the lead and were controlling the game. He did everything we asked of him and that's why we love having him back there."
Noel Devine rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries as the Mountaineers ran for 226 yards in the game.
Perhaps the most exciting news of the day for West Virginia was the play of the secondary. Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins only threw for 107 yards and was picked off twice as the secondary, and the defense in general, stepped up big today, allowing the fewest amount of points to an FBS team since Bill Stewart's arrival.

Rutgers Wins Shootout
Jourdan Brooks breaks Rutgers school record with 264 yard rushing performance
Piscataway, NJ (AP) - The 20th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (3-0, 0-0 Big East) didn't exactly start off Big East Conference play the way they would have hoped as the Mountaineers fell to a pesky Rutgers (2-0, 0-0 Big East) squad.
The Mountaineers certainly didn't anticipate allowing sophomore halfback Jourdan Brooks to rush for 264 yards and tow touchdowns in the game. Brooks set the Rutgers school record with his performance.
Rutgers dominated the box score, outgaining the Mountaineers 517 yards to 337, but three Jabu Lovelace interceptions kept the game uncomfortably close.
With 2:26 left and the Scarlet Knights up 38-35, Lovelace was pick-sixed Eddie Davis for 66 yards to put the Mountaineers up. West Virgnia missed the two-point conversion. However, Brooks worked his magic and ran in for yet another huge touchdown run; this one from 74 yards out.
Then, one of the strangest and most unusual plays in football happened. Lovelace was picked off on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt and West Virginia ran it back all the way into the end zone to give the Mountaineers two points. Quite the momentum swing!
With the game 44-41 in Rutgers' favor, the Scarlet Knights punted, giving West Virginia the ball. West Virginia marched all the way up the field to the 34 yard line, facing a fourth and six with 42 seconds remaining. Now came decision time. Bill Stewart elected to go for it as the field goal would be from 51 yards out and against a 7-10 MPH wind. Jarrett Brown's pass fell incomplete and Rutgers bled out the rest of the time, and keeping the Scarlet Knights undefeated on the year.
West Virginia was held to 80 yards rushing as the Mountaineers played from behind most of the game and just never got much going. Devine only managed 39 yards on the ground and Brown added 37. However, Brown passed for 240 yards and a pair of touchdowns, the most passing yards seen in Brown's career.

Re: Mountaineers Are Always Free!!! (NCAA 09)
It's been tough these first few seasons because there were a lot of expectations, but we haven't produced. I hope to get some good recruits in here so maybe we can finally win the Big East.
Our offensive line is worse this year, too, as a lot of our linemen last year were seniors.Comment

West Virginia Destroys Syracuse
'Eers win Schwartzwalder Trophy for eighth straight year
Syracuse, NY (AP) - For the last seven years, this rivarly has been one of the most lopsided in all of college football. It was more of the same today as 24th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (3-1, 0-1 Big East) picked up their first Big East Conference victory against an undermanned Syracuse Orange (2-2, 0-1 Big East) squad. The Orange were off to a promising start after defeating Illinois and Washington, but now have dropped their first two of Big East Conference play to fall to 2-3.
West Virginia only outgained Syracuse 352 yards to 292, but three Syracuse turnovers and great special teams play by the Mountaineers gave them a lopsided 40-15 win.
Noel Devine was knocked out in the second quarter, and though he was cleared to play in the fourth quarter, head coach Bill Stewart elected to sit him to prevent any further injury in the blowout. Thus, he had his second straight game of less than 40 yards rushing. He did catch a screen pass in the first quarter which we turned into an 82 yard touchdown, however.
With the running game lessened without Devine, West Virginia looked to the passing game. Jarrett Brown completed 14 of 19 passes for two touchdowns in this one as he looked sharp against the weak Orange seconday. He hooked up with Wes Lyons four time as the 6'8" senior had a career game for the Mountaineers, totalling 87 receiving yards and a touchdown.
"We came out ready to play today," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "Our defense forced turnovers and our offense worked beautifully in this one.
"It was nice that we left the Rutgers loss behind us. We came out of the gates ready to play and focused on this one."

The Nemesis is Back
South Florida beats West Virginia again
Tampa, FL (AP) - It seems that a lot of teams have those teams which they simply cannot beat, no matter what. USC has this with Oregon State. LSU seems to be having this happen against Arkansas. And #23 West Virginia (4-1, 1-1 Big East) simply cannot beat #24 South Florida (4-0, 1-0 Big East). This is now the third time in the last four years that the Mountaineers have fallen to the Bulls. The Mountaineers beat the Bulls last year in Morgantown, but there's not much to brag about there as that Bulls team went 4-8 overall and an embarrassing 0-7 in Big East Conference play.
This year, South Florida is back. Now 5-0 and 2-0 in the Big East, the Bulls are smelling a Big East Title.
And the Mountaineers just got that scent yanked away from them as a second conference loss likely eliminates them from Big East Title contention.
The key play came early in the fourth quarter in this one with the score 21-14 in favor of the Bulls. Wes Lyons fumbled the football and Charton Sinclair picked up the fumble and took it 57 yards to the house to put the Bulls up 28-14. After a Jarrett Brown interception, the Bulls tacked on a field goal to make it a three score game and ended up winning by a 20 point margin with a score of 34-14.
"They were simply the better team today," said West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "Coach Leavitt has a really good football team and it's an honor to play that kind of competition. They've already knocked off Auburn at Auburn and now have beaten us, so I think it's safe to say they're pretty darn good.
"We just didn't execute today and made some bad mistakes, most notably on defense."
Stewart was speaking of the Bulls' big plays. In fact, they're touchdowns came from 87 yards, 51 yards, and 67 yards out plus the 57 yard fumble return for a touchdown. Both of South Florida's field goals were even outside of 43 yards as the Bulls didn't run a single play in the red zone, yet put 34 points up on the board.
The Mountaineers will hope to rebound agains a seemingly helpess Louisville team which has spiraled to a 1-5 start, including an embarrassing a 49-35 loss to Louisiana Tech.

Mountaineers Win Sloppy Game
Rain causes six Mountaineers turnovers, but 'Eers still pull off the 'W'
Morgantown, WV (AP) - It wasn't exactly the pretiest and best played game in the world, but it got the job done.
Four first half turnovers kept the game in a 21-21 deadlock at halftime as the West Virginia Mountaineers (4-2, 1-2 Big East), having lost two of their last three games, were struggling with a horrible Louisville (1-5, 0-2 Big East) squad. All of Louisville's 21 points were direct results of turnovers.
In the second half, however, the Mountaineers got the ship righted and outscored the Cardinals 13-3 to pull off an unimpressive 34-24 win.
Jarrett Brown passed for a career-high 311 yards and three touchdowns on the day, but three interceptions caused by the sloppy weather dampened his career day including a pick-six. The same went for Noel Devine, who rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown, but fumbled the ball twice.
"This was a sloppy game and we just weren't ready for it," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "The rain was causing some trouble, but we weren't playing very well either, regardless of the weather.
"Give credit to Louisville. They're a much better football team than their 1-6 record shows and I think they'll upset a couple teams in Big East play."
The Mountaineers are off next week, so Bill Stewart and his staff will have an extra week to get things ironed out and ready for their game against the Connecticut Huskies at home in two weeks.
