    Hey, don't choke against Auburn.

And we'll get you guys back next year for what you did to us in real life.

Auburn is ranked #19 and is good in the game unlike in real life unfortunately.

I don't know if you all will get us back, but we do have to travel to Auburn, so it should be a good one ... especially if Auburn stops sucking like they did this year.

          Tigers Maul Mountaineers
Questionable call costs West Virginia the game

Morgantown, WV (AP) - It was fourth and three from the 22 yard line with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter and the game was knotted up at 17. After just allowing Auburn (5-2, 3-2 SEC) to easily score a touchdown with three minutes remaining, West Virginia (5-1, 2-0 Big East) head coach Bill Stewart elected to go for it rather than kick the field goal, go up 20-17, and hope the defense could stop the Tigers from scoring.

"In retrospect, it was a bad call," said Stewart. "But we had the momentum on that drive and I felt like we could get the three yards."

The Mountaineers ran an option play to the right and Pat White's pitch to Jock Sanders was behind him and resulted in a fumble. Sanders fell on the loose ball, but the Tigers got the ball at the 30 yard line and proceeded up the field. With 50 seconds left and the Tigers inside the 20 yard line, Stewart elected to allow Auburn to score to give his offense one last chance.

That chance was wasted, though, when Pat White's screen pass to Jock Sanders was picked off for six to seal the 31-17 Auburn win. The Tigers outscored West Virginia 21-0 in the final quarter.

The Tigers dominated the statistics as they outgained the Mountaineers 403 to 261 yards and passed for 141 more yards than did the Mountaineers.

Noel Devine was sidelined in the third quarter, but didn't have a spectacular game prior to that point as the sophomore only rushed for 50 yards on 15 carries. His longest run was only 15 yards. Devine will be fine for next week's against at Connecticut. Jock Sanders filled in well, though, as he rushed for 53 yards and a 30 yard touchdown run on nine carries.

"Auburn played a heck of a game," Bill Stewart reflected. "A positive from this game is that our defense bent, but didn't break. Furthermore, this loss is in non-conference play, so we're still a perfect 2-0 in Big East play."

            West Virginia Triumphs Over UConn
Late Devine 70 yard touchdown run keys win over Huskies at "The Rent"

Storrs, CT (AP) - The 21st-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (6-2, 2-0 Big East), fresh off a disappointing blown lead against Auburn, nearly blew another today against the Connecticut Huskies (4-4, 0-3 Big East) on the road.

West Virginia jumped out to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but gradually the Huskies worked their way back into the game and got within one point with the score 14-13 midway through the third quarter.

The Huskies were driving late in the third quarter looking to take their first lead of the game when Quinton Andrews stepped in front of a Tyler Lorenzen pass and took it to the house to make the score 21-13.

UConn would tack on another touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but missed the two point conversion and the score was 21-19. However, Noel Devine was having none of that and put the game away on the very first play of the ensuing drive as he took a run out of the shotgun straight up the middle for a 70 yard touchdown.

Devine ended with 125 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

West Virginia was outgained 263 yards to 344, but contained UConn's star running back Donald Brown as the junior only gained 86 yards rushing and a touchdown on 20 carries. Tyler Lorenzen had a big day throwing for 248 yards, but he was also picked off twice, once in the red zone and the other on the Quinton Andrews pick-six.

"We played a lot better today," said West Virginia defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. "For the last couple of weeks, our defense had been sketchy at best, but we stepped up in a big way today and slowed down Donald Brown and the Huskies' feared rushing attack at their place."

West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart also commended the effort, saying, "We came out and played well tonight in a tough environment. It's never easy to win games on the road, but we did tonight."

Bearcats Stay Undefeated in Conference Play, Knock Off WVU
Cincinnati goes up 17-0 early to cruise to 26-17 victory

Morgantown, WV (AP) - The 22nd-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats (6-1, 3-0 Big East) proved their worth today as the Bearcats knocked off the 21st-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (6-2, 3-0 Big East) in a fantastic game which came down to the wire.

It looked as if a blowout might be in store early on as Tony Pike shredded the inexperienced West Virginia secondary. Up 14-0, the Mountaineer defense made a huge stop in the red zone and forced the Bearcats to kick a field goal to make it 17-0. From there on, the West Virginia defense did an admirable job on Pike, who threw for 318 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Pat White tossed a throw across the middle to a wide open Jock Sanders on a crossing pattern and he used his speed in the open field to take it 42 yards to the house to get within 10 points. Noel Devine would run in from one yard out with 10 seconds remaining in the half to make it 17-14 Bearcats at halftime.

Pike Connected with Dominick Goodman, who caught seven passes for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns, from three yards out to make it 24-14 Cincinnati.

After missing his first kick from 52 yards out, Pat McAfee drilled a 47 yard field goal with four minutes left to get within a touchdown and the Mountaineer defense held to give the Mountaineers one last chance with two minutes left and 80 yards to go to get the tying touchdown.

However, on third and 10 from the 20 yard line, Jarrett Brown, who replaced starting quarterback Pat White due to his passing expertise in the obvious passing situation, passed to a wide open Arlic Arnett who dropped the ball, forcing a fourth down. Pat White was brought back in a fourth down and faced immense pressure, running backwars 20 yards into a safetythat put the game away at 26-17 in a somewhat ill-advised play for a senior quarterback with four years of starting experience.

Dropped passes were key tonight as Jock Sanders dropped three and Will Johnson dropped one to go along with Arnett's drop as the Mountaineers totaled five drops on the night.

The Mountaineers only gained 212 yards of total offense in this evening game and offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen was not pleased. "Give credit to Cincinnati," he said. "They gameplanned very well for our offensive speed. However, if we don't drop those passes and our offensive line makes a few more blocks, we could have a huge game. Tonight, lack of execution got us. It happens and you just have to deal with it. We won't sweat it. We're still 3-1 in the Big East with a realistic shot at winning the conference still, so we're not too worried about it just yet. We can't afford this in the future, though."

Noel Devine also surpassed 1,000 rushing yards on the season with his 77 yard performance this afternoon.

In our 3-3-5 defense, our safeties play up towards the line of scrimmage more and, thus, get more tackles, but it is still bad news to have those players leading the tackling numbers. A linebacker is much more desirable. It just shows how easily Tony Pike dissected our secondary. A lot of those tackles were 10 yards down the field and had to be made by the secondary, including our safeties.

Devine Carries West Virginia to Upset Win Over Louisville
Devine scores all four West Virginia touchdowns in 31-28 upset win

Louisville, KY (AP) - Noel Devine's 179 rushing yards and four touchdowns carried the #24 West Virginia Mountaineers (6-3, 3-1 Big East) to a 31-28 win on the road over the favored #13 Louisville Cardinals (9-1, 4-1 Big East).

Late in the third quarter, Devine strolled into the end zone from 15 yards out to make the score 31-7 West Virginia. The crowd in Louisville sat silent as their hometown Cardinals were being served a beatdown at home by a supposedly inferior team.

However, like most great teams do, Louisville rallied back. Louisville freshman running back Victor Anderson ran in from two yards out with 55 seconds left to pull with three points of the Mountaineers, who were once up by 24 points. Papa John's Cardinal Stadium was rocking once again as the team prepared for the onside kick.

However, West Virginia backup tight end Sam Monroe snared the onside kick and fell down to the ground to give West Virginia possession. A six yard run by Mark Rodgers for a first down sealed the deal as the Mountaineers walked away with an impressive victory.

West Virginia outgained the Cardinals 396 yards to 261 and rushed for 312 yards. Speaking about his team's impressive rushing performance, offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen said, "We didn't really do anything special. We just handed the ball off to Devine out of the shotgun and he made some good things happen for us. He made some guys miss and our offensive line also did a great job at blocking for him. All-in-all, we executed and played well and that was enough to come away with the all-important 'W'."

Bill Stewart was pleased with his team's effort as well. He said, "We came out with a passion and a fire that we've rarely displayed this year. We jumped all over them early on and we're attacklin' on defense. We almost blew our 24 point cushion, but it's pretty amazing that we had a 24 point lead to begin with.

"Louisville has a pretty good quarterback by the name of Hunter Cantwell. He has a gun for an arm, but we held him to just 160 yards passing on the day. Victor Anderson had a good day for Louisville, but our key coming into the game was to slow down Cantwell and I'd say that was mission accomplished."

West Virginia will take on the Pittsburgh Panthers next week in the annual Backyard Brawl. All West Virginia fans remember Pitt's 13-9 victory over the Mountaineers at Mountaineer Field last season which knocked the Mountaineers out of the National Championship Game on the final week of the season. The Mountaineers will certainly be seeking revenge next week against the undefeated Panthers and will attempt to knock them out of the national title picture this time around.

                            Pittsburgh Clinches Big East
West Virginia falls in three overtimes to their hated rivals

Pittsburgh, PA (AP) - It looked as if the Mountaineers might get true revenge on the #5 Pittsburgh Panthers (10-0, 5-0 Big East). The Panthers knocked the Mountaineers of the National Title Game last season and this year it looked as if #21 West Virginia (7-3, 4-1 Big East) would pull off the upset. However, after going up 35-28 late in the fourth quarter, Pittsburgh scored. West Virginia's Pat McAfee missed a 49 yard field goal
which would have won the game just short and the game was on into overtime.

After two overtimes of trading touchdowns, the third overtime came and the teams had to go for two point conversions after each touchdown. West Virginia cornerback had a would-be pick, which would have likely won the game, but the pass sailed through his hands and Pittsburgh scored a touchdown and got the two to make the score 57-49. West Virginia would have one chance.

The Mountaineers easily drove the ball 25 yards down the field as quarterback Pat White sailed into the end zone with ease from nine yards out. Now, the Mountaineers had to go for two. Pat White rolled out to the right on the attempt, but was stuffed and sacked for a loss which sent the Mountaineers home backing with yet another Backyard Brawl loss and made Pat White 2-2 in his career against the hated rivals. The score was 57-55 Pitt.

With the win, Pittsburgh improves to a perfect 11-0 and 6-0 in the Big East as they clinch the outright Big East Title and the BCS bid to go along with it.

"This was a tough loss and it's a shame that we lost out on our shot to win the Big East," West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart said. "We made a bunch of clutch plays, but Pittsburgh simply made more. No shame in losing this one. We gave it our best and Pittsburgh was simply the better team."

The Mountaineers did their best to contain LeShaun McCoy and did a great job on him, holding the sophomore to just 93 yards rushing and a touchdown on 20 carries, but Pat Bostick, who was in for the injured starting quarterback Bill Stull, torched the weak Mountaineer secondary to the tune of 387 yards and seven touchdowns, though the touchdown number was inflated with the overtime touchdowns.

"We had a real tough time containing Bostick," explained West Virginia defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. "We set our sights on stopping LeShaun McCoy, which we did a marvelous job doing, and we decided we would let Bostick beat us. He was Pittsburgh's backup quarterback, so we decided to focus on McCoy and let Bostick beat us and he did a great job doing just that. Our secondary is improving, but we just aren't where we need to be just yet."

Noel Devine and Pat White both had great rushing performances as both tallied over 110 yards rushing. White carries the ball 15 times for 237 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but Noel Devine put on the best game of his life. He carried the ball 38 times for 237 yards and five touchdowns, all career-highs for the sophomore speedster. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.
