Frazer Lights Up West Virginia
UConn QB passes for 445 yards against helpless Mountaineer secondary
Morgantown, WV (AP) - One of the finest performances in Mountaineer Field history was put on tonight, but it wasn't a good thing for the 25th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (5-2, 2-2 Big East). UConn (5-1, 2-1 Big East) quarterback Zach Frazer completed 26 of 43 passes for 445 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception against a Mountaineer defense that had all it could handle in a 38-35 Huskies victory in Morgantown.
"Frazer was just on tonight," explained West Virginia defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel. "We tried playing man, zone, blitzing, and just about everything else and nothing worked. We really thought UConn would run the ball more, but they caught us off guard with 43 pass attempts."
The Mountaineer defense surrendered 578 offensive yards to the 5-1 Huskies, who now improve to 6-1. Meanwhile, West Virginia is all but eliminated for Big East Title contention as the 'Eers fall to 2-3 in conference play and 5-3 overall.
Both Jarrett Brown and Noel Devine had fine days for the Mountaneer offense, which rolled off 459 yards, but it wasn't enough as the Mountaineer defense just didn't do their job.
The Mountaineers were down 38-35 with 10 seconds left and the ball at their own 22 yard line. Brown unloaded a bomb which landed in the hands of Arlic Arnett at the 35 yard line, inside of field goal range. However, Arnett was tackled in bounds and, with the Mountaineers out of timeouts, they didn't have enough time to get to the line of scrimage and spike the ball.

REVENGE!!!!!
Sweet revenge for the Mountaineers as Pitt is devastated in Morgantown
Morgantown, WV (AP) - It was a repeat of 2007, except the teams had switched sides as to who would play spoiler. The #4 Pittsburgh Panthers (8-0, 5-0 Big East) came in looking to virtually clinch the Big East's BCS birth and move to 9-0 on the year, staying alive in the National Championship hunt. Instead, the unranked West Virginia Mountaineers (5-3, 2-3 Big East) handed the Panthers their first conference loss of this dynasty and just their second loss overall in this two-year dynasty.
Jeff Mullen elected to run more out from under center as opposed to out of the shotgun in this one and it's likely he will continue to do so for the forseeable future at least. "We had been working in more plays from under center over the past few weeks," Mullen explained. "After starting off 2-3 in conference play, I felt that we needed to fully implement it and it worked quite well. We still run plenty of plays out of the shotgun, but we also are able to have a better power running game with the new offense."
*EDITOR'S NOTE: Basically, I switched to the Connecticut playbook, which offers exactly the sort of offense I'd like to run. It has some shotgun plays along with some I-formation, some ace-formation, ect. and it has a nice mix of plays IMO. Plus, it still has quite a few quarterback runs, as well.*
While the Mountaineers only racked up 373 yards of total offense, they controlled the time of possession by nearly a two-to-one margin and held Pittsburgh's prolific offense to just 21 points and 286 offensive yards. This was a huge relief after the Mountaineers surrendered over 550 yards of total offesnse to the UConn Huskies in their last game.
The Mountaineers led 17-7 at halftime, but Pittsburgh started to get their offense rolling in the second half as they pulled to within two points early in the fourth quarter with the score 23-21 Mountaineers. Facing a fourth and two at his own 45 yard line, Bill Stewart called for a fake punt run. The ball was snapped and fullback Will Johnson ran up the middle for a three yard gain and a Mountaineer first down. Most importantly, it snubbed the momentum from Pittsburgh and it allowed the Mountaineers to cruise to a 33-21 home victory to improve to 6-3.
Jarrett Brown was deadly efficient, completing 15 of 18 passes for 164 yards while spreading the ball around to seven different receivers. He also added 57 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Noel Devine was injured in the first quarter and didn't come back until after halftime, but that didn't stop him from getting 26 carries and 120 rushing yards as the junior was the main contributor on offense in the second half.
The game was well-played and clean with few penalties and no turnovers, but there was definitely a lot of effort going into this one and the crowd stormed the fields following the victory. You can expect some 33-21 signs next year when the Mountaineers play Pitt.
While West Virginia's Big East Title hopes are already dashed and mathematically impossible, this win will sure help calm the spirits in Morgantown as the Mountaineers improve to 3-3 in Big East Conference play and 6-3 overall, with just three games left against Army, Cincinnati, and Auburn.

Complacency Rears Its Ugly Head
Mountaineers play poorly in 48-45 victory over 1-7 Army
Morgantown, WV (AP) - There was a collective sigh of relief at Mountaineer field after Scott Kozlowski kicked the game-winning 46 yard field goal as time expired tonight, fighting off possibly the biggest upset in school history for the Army Black Knights (1-7), who came in with just one win all year, which was ironically last week. They almost extended their winning streak to two games, but came up just short as the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-3, 3-3 Big East), fresh off a monumental upset of Pittsburgh, came away with a 48-45 win.
The Mountaineers had no trouble at all moving the ball and racked up 529 yards of total offense. The problem was the defense, which gave up 339 passing yards to Army quarterback Chip Bowden, 240 of which came in the first half, and 242 rushing yards, adding up to 581 yards of total offense for the lackluster Black Knights offense.
"I think we were so high on ourselves after beating fourth-ranked Pittsburgh last week and really looked past the Black Knights, who even though they came in at 1-7, are not as bad as their record indicates," said West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart about why his team played so poorly.
Whatever the case, Jarrett Brown and Noel Devine had huge days on offense. Brown passed for 291 yards and a career-high four touchdowns while Noel Devine eclipsed the 200 yard mark for the first time this season, earning 212 rushing yards and a touchdown run on 23 carries. He also caught three passes for 44 yards.
West Virginia was way ahead early, leading 31-14 at halftime, but the Black Knights stormed back to force a 31-31 tie laste in the third quarter before tying it once again with 24 seconds left in regulation at 45-45. However, Mountaineer quarterback Jarrett Brown stepped up big and delivered a couple of huge throws to pilot his Mountaineers inside field goal range, allowing Scott Kozlowski to kick the game-winning 46 yard field goal.
Army originally wasn't even on the schedule, but East Carolina backed out of their contract with West Virginia and the Mountaineers searched for someone to play, giving the Black Knights a try, thinking it would be a sure win. It was a win, but there was nothing sure about it.
This probably wasn't the way the seniors desired their final home game to go.
