    Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Thanks for the comments you guys!

CPre... have faith! I'm sure your Niners will start to rebound sometime. That sucks about what happened to Garcia, though.

      Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 5: San Francisco (4-0) at Arizona (2-1)

      1st Quarter
Arizona got the ball first but the tough SF defense shut them down quickly, forcing a punt. Jimmy Williams returned the punt all the way to Arizona's 25 yard line and San Francisco appeared to be in business. Two plays later, however, RB Kevan Barlow coughed up the ball at the 15 after making a tough catch. The defense would come up big on the very next play, forcing Jeff Blake to fumble as well. John Engelberger snatched up the ball and took it to the house himself to give the Niners a 7-0 lead. After a one yard run to start their next drive, Jeff Blake hit rookie HB Lamar Reed in the open, beating the blitz. Reed sped his way down field en route to a 79-yard touchdown. This knotted the game at 7.

      2nd Quarter
The 49ers looked good on their next drive which ended up with Jeff Garcia hitting Antonio Freeman for a 13-yard score. The teams would trade punts, but Arizona fumbled on their return and the Niners got it at the 35 of the Cardinals. The drive was short, finishing up with a 15-yard touchdown reception by Owens to give them a 21-7 advantage. Arizona's woes continued as Jeff Blake threw an interception to Jimmy Williams who was able to make it to Arizona's 21 before being tackles. Barlow fumbled again at the 15-yard line, but the referees reviewed the play as it was under two minutes and it was reversed! The 49ers finished up and Barlow ran it in from the 5 to make the score 28-7 as the half drew to a close.

      3rd Quarter
San Francisco got the ball first and didn't seem to miss a beat. They made it downfield before Garcia handed off to Barlow for a 3-yard touchdown run. The Cardinals own offense finally got started on the next drive, as they made it downfield in 3:29 and Blake found Anquan Boldin for a 26 yard touchdown. San Francisco got to within the 5 yard line of Arizona but Cardinal defender David Barrett made Garcia pay for a bad pass and he took it 98 yards to the endzone. The score was now 35-21.

      4th Quarter
Coach Erickson was confident that his defense could hold on and he decided to put in Ken Dorsey to give him some more time at quarterback. Midway through the quarter, Erickson felt even more confident and put in Michael Cooper to give Barlow a rest. Cooper found the endzone from 1 yard out to make the score 42-21. The 49ers would get the ball back, but forced with a 3rd & Long, Dorsey tried to find Owens and instead found David Barrett who once again took it to the house, this time 67 yards. Before the game ended, San Francisco ran all but 30 seconds off the clock on their way to yet another score, this a 7-yard run by Michael Cooper to give the Niners a 49-28 lead.

FINAL: San Francisco beats the Cards 49-28!

      Player of the Game
RB Kevan Barlow - 28 att, 128 yards, 2 TD

      Key Performances

Week 6: San Francisco (5-0) at Seattle (1-4)

            1st Quarter
Things didn't look so great for the 49ers on their opening drive as Seattle and mainly DT John Randle forced a 3 & out. Seneca Wallace started at quarterback for the Seahawks as Hasselbeck broke his shoulder in the preseason and would be lost for the entire season. The 'Hawks couldn't get much production from their offense, either. Late in the quarter, Jeff Chandler put the Niners on the board with a 41-yard field goal.

            2nd Quarter
The Seahawks would be forced to punt and CB Jimmy Williams returned the punt to around midfield. Kevan Barlow finally broke out for a 23-yard run which put the Niners in the redzone. At the end of the drive, San Francisco faced a 4th & Goal from the one yard line, and Kevan Barlow was given the ball. It turned out to be a good decision as Barlow forced his way into the endzone to make it 10-0. Seattle's offensive struggles continued and another punt was had. Just before the half ended, Chandler made it 13-0 with a 34-yard field goal.

            3rd Quarter
Seattle's opening drive actually yielded some points, coming in the form of a 34-yard field goal from their kicker. The 49ers would be forced to punt on their next drive and the Seahawks seemed pumped. Seneca Wallace let go of a beautiful pass and Ahmed Plummer attempted the interception. Instead, Plummer missed and the ball landed in the hands of Koren Robinson who ran 72 yards, untouched to a touchdown to cut the lead to 13-10.

            4th Quarter
Early in the quarter, Chandler continued to perform, nailing a 26-yard field goal after the Niners failed to get into the endzone from inside the 10. After forcing a punt, it appeared the 49ers were in control of the game as they drove to Seattle's 20. On the next play, however, Garcia fumbled and the 'Hawks recovered and got to their own 27 yard line. You'd think this would inspire the Seahawks who were only trailing by 6 at this point. However, two plays later, Shaun Alexander fumbled it right back and San Francisco gained control at the Seattle 24. This turnover was converted into a 35-yard field goal, making it 19-10. With just over two minutes, Seattle had driven into 49ers territory. Facing fourth down, they opted for the 51-yard field goal to make it 19-13. Then, they opted to kickoff as opposed to an onside kick, figuring their defense could stop the Niners offense. This was not the case, however, as Barlow and a few nice passes by Garcia helped them run out the remaining time.

FINAL: San Francisco escapes a visit to Seattle 19-13!

            Player of the Game
            K Jeff Chandler - 1/1 XP, 4/4 FG (41, 34, 26, 35)

            Key Performances
            QB Jeff Garcia - 83.0, 16/26, 185 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
            RB Kevan Barlow - 25 att, 129 yards, TD - 3 rec, 11 yards
WR Terrell Owens - 5 rec, 82 yards

            San Francisco 49ers: 6-0

            Next Game: @ Rams (3-2)

Straight From the Coach- On starting 6-0...
"You know... a lot of teams have started off a season like this and then ended up falling apart in the second half of the season and even missing the playoffs. Just because we're undefeated at this point means nothing. If we allow ourselves to think that we're unbeatable, we'll be unprepared and some team will mop the floor with us. For our next game we have to go into St. Louis. Can you imagine what they'll do to us if we overlook them? We've got to approach things one game at a time and not get ahead of ourselves. There are still ten games left for us to play this season before the playoffs even arrive. That's more than half the season! This team is playing great at the moment but we have to make sure we stay focused."

Week 7: San Francisco (6-0) at St. Louis (3-2)
Interesting... exciting... explosive. All could be used when describing this game. It started one way and ended another. This game gave meaning to the phrase "any given sunday".

                  1st Quarter
The Rams high-powered offense got the ball to start the game but they were quickly forced to punt. On the 49ers' first play from scrimmage, Kevan Barlow busted a tackle and ran 55 yards to the endzone giving the Niners an early 7-0 lead and silencing the crowd. Once the Rams got the ball back, Warner threw an interception to Ahmed Plummer at the St. Louis 39. San Francisco decided to be aggressive and Garcia tried to find Owens for the touchdown, but instead found a Rams defenseman at the 11 who picked off the pass. The Niner defense forced another punt. Just before the quarter ended, Chandler knocked in a field goal of 25 yards to make it 10-0.

                  2nd Quarter
Warner looked to the WR who burned the 49ers the last time--Tory Holt. Holt caught the ball and broke two head-on tackles en route to an 83-yard touchdown. The 49ers didn't let this discourage them as their offense kept pumping away and eventually, from the five yard line, Garcia threw a bullet to Owens. The Rams offense was inspired by their previous success as they drove downfield, due to passing as the running game was non-existant the entire time. Warner hooked up with Isaac Bruce for the 16-yard score. With three seconds to play in the half, Jeff Garcia fumbled at the Rams 11 yard line, opening the door for the Rams to tie the game at 17 with a 27-yard field goal from Wilkins.

                  3rd Quarter
On the opening kickoff, Jimmy Williams fumbled and Adam Archuleta ran the fumble recovery to paydirt, giving St. Louis their first lead at 24-17. After forcing the Niners to punt, Warner led them downfield, again finding Holt-- this time for a 10-yard touchdown. This put the Rams on top 31-17. The 49ers answered back with one play once again. And once again it was Kevan Barlow-- on a 75 yard run. The score was 31-24 at the end of the quarter.

                  4th Quarter
St. Louis seemed unstoppable, reaching San Fran's 25-yard line quickly before Warner lobbed yet another touchdown pass to Holt. The 49ers managed to keep their offense rolling. They had an 8-play drive that ended with Garcia's pass to Beasley for the 15-yard score. Again, the Niners were down only a touchdown. San Francisco's defense finally forced a punt. They got within scoring range and then-- Garcia throws for Freeman but it's picked off by rookie Seth Parkman who runs 101 yards, untouched mind you, for the touchdown to make it 45-31. San Francisco managed another score after a short drive. It was a 3-yard pass to Owens. 45-38 and just under two minutes left. They had to try the onside kick. St. Louis recovered, but the Niners knocked them back 2 yards on the drive and had the clock stopped with a minute left. Then, Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins finally sealed it with a 55-yard field goal to make it 48-38.

Final: San Francisco gets upset in St. Louis 48-38!

Week 8 - Arizona (2-4) at San Francisco (6-1)- Simmed The Niners beat the Cardinals, but it was hardly a rebound as the score was 14-6. The two scores were passes to Owens.
