    Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 2: Carolina (0-1) at San Francisco (1-0)

    1st Quarter
On the opening drive, Carolina appeared efficient at moving the ball. However, that all ended when rookie TE Joel Farmer fumbled the ball and San Francisco recovered at their own 43. The 49ers converted the turnover into points as Beasley found his way into the endzone from three yards out. This seemed to temporarily stunt Carolina's offense, as they were forced to punt the next time out. Jimmy Williams made some nice moves on his way to a 55-yard punt return touchdown to give the Niners a healthy 14-0 lead. Carolina answered this with a 7-play, 77-yard, 4:52 drive that ended when Del Homme hit Steve Smith for a 38-yard score to put the Panthers on the board.

    2nd Quarter
San Francisco punted away but Carolina couldn't get very far as Mike Rumph picked off Del Homme and made it back to the Carolina 25 yard line before being brought down from behind. The Panthers held them to just a field goal, putting the score at 17-7. After Carolina punted again, Garcia immediately threw an interception at the SF 36. After a five yard run by Stephen Davis, Del Homme found Muhsin Muhammad for a 31-yard touchdown. On the 49ers next drive, they handed the ball to Barlow... FUMBLE! But wait, as it was under two minutes left in the half, the referees reviewed the call and overturned it. The 49ers continued down the field and Chandler added a 33-yard field goal to make it 20-14 at the half.

    3rd Quarter
Garcia continued to struggle when the Niners opened the second half as he threw an interception to Fields who ran back 29 yards and gave the Panthers a slim 21-20 advantage. San Francisco's offense then got in gear and marched down the field. At the four yard line, Barlow was a little winded so he took a break. Hearst came in temporarily and on his only carry of the game, he scored a touchdown from four yards out. On Carolina's next play, Del Homme was picked off by Derek Smith who ran 28 yards to paydirt and gave the 49ers a 34-21 lead.

    4th Quarter
Both defenses looked great in this quarter as there was no scoring. The Panthers managed two sacks in this quarter alone and the 49ers managed one. That was all the action that was had.

    FINAL: San Francisco wins 34-21!

    Player of the Game
WR Terrell Owens - 7 rec, 140 yards

    Key Performances
    QB Jeff Garcia - 40.0, 12/23, 188 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT

CB Jimmy Williams - Tackle, INT, Punt Return TD

Thanks, man! I got a feeling the Dolphins defense is going to give me trouble. We shall soon find out.

Week 3: San Francisco (2-0) at Miami (0-2)
The 49ers came into this one fearing the Dolphins defense and the potential problems that could arise from Ricky Williams, but they soon found out why the Dolphins had the record that they did.

                        1st Quarter
On the opening drive, San Francisco's offense was rolling. Jeff Garcia's second pass completion was a 23 yarder to Eric Johnson. Thinking he only got one foot in bounds, the Dolphins challenged the play. The refs stood by their previous decision, costing Miami a timeout and keeping the Niners drive alive. The drive ended when Barlow caught a short 3-yard pass from Garcia to put SF up 7-0. Miami's first drive consisted of three unexpected plays-- three consecutive passes, all of which failed. The 49ers moved into scoring range and Jeff Chandler tacker on a 39-yard field goal before the quarter ended to give San Fran a 10 point lead.

                        2nd Quarter
Miami's offense continued not to perform despite Ricky Williams' initial 5-yard run on first down. The 49ers took the ball and once more drove down the field as Garcia hit Owens for a 16-yard score. Miami finally responded in a positive way with a respectable drive ending with Williams' 5-yard run to get the Dolphins some points and put the score at 17-7. Thanks to some great runs by Kevan Barlow, the 49ers managed another field goal. Miami also continued to produce on offense and with 3 seconds left, K Mare nailed a 48-yard field goal right down the middle to make it 20-10 at the half.

                        3rd Quarter
Miami would be forced to punt to open the second half. The 49ers offense didn't miss a beat as they proceeded to Miami's 11. Garcia found Beasley for the score, but the Dolphins once again challenged-- this time the spot of the ball. The referees agreed this time and placed the ball at the one. This opened the door for Barlow's second touchdown of the day to put the Niners up 27-10. On the next drive, Jay Fiedler hooked up with Chris Chambers for a 33-yard touchdown pass and the Dolphins found themselves down 10. Miami finally forced San Francisco to punt, but their hopes of a score were dashed when Ricky Williams fumbled at the 17 yard line of the Dolphins. Surprisingly the Miami defense stood tall and held the Niners to a field goal, giving them a 30-17 advantage.

                        4th Quarter
Things started off great for Miami to open the fourth quarter as Brock Marion returned the kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and Miami found themselves only down six points. The Niner offense got back in shape and ate up some clock time while getting within range of a score. Chandler showed that he has what it takes as he hit a clutch 44-yard field goal to make it a two-score game and seal the win for the Niners.

                        FINAL: San Francisco wins 33-24!

                        Player of the Game
                        QB Jeff Garcia - 105.7, 16/27, 192 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT

                        K Jeff Chandler - 3/3 XP, 4/4 FG, Long: 44 yards

I have a question about the Super Bowl, sorry its a little late for it, but.... I was wonderin, how'd you miss a extra point attempt? Just wonderin.....
Congrats on your great season BTW!

Hey thanks for the compliments. I missed the XP because I was stupid and accidentally moved the arrow and then hit the buttons too fast on the meter. It was definitely MY fault and not the kicker's. It was my own stupidity. Don't know how to explain it other than that... just I accidentally leaned on the left joystick which moved the arrow-- that's really the reason I think, as I've screwed up on the meter before but that hasn't caused me to miss the XP.
