    Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 13: Philadelphia (4-7) at San Francisco (9-2)
Philadelphia's record was not lying. Part of the reason for the lack of wins, however, was due to McNabb being injured. In his place was rookie QB Darren Maddox, who couldn't quite fill McNabb's shoes.

    1st Quarter
On Philadelphia's opening drive, they were held to a 3 & out by a wicked San Francisco defense that yielded just one yard on a run on first down. The 49ers took the ball and didn't give it back for another 5:27, as they put together a touchdown drive culminating in a 12-yard reception by TE Eric Johnson.

    2nd Quarter
As Philadelphia's offense struggled to get started, the Niners couldn't help but find themselves making it down the field easily. From the 19 yard line, Garcia handed off to Kevan Barlow and he was off... breaking through two tackles on his way to paydirt to increase the lead. Just before the half, a 20-yard field goal by Chandler made it 17-0.

    3rd Quarter
San Francisco's offense was finally stopped on the first drive of the second half, but LaFleur positioned the punt at the two yard line thanks to it bouncing out of bounds. On the next play, Mike Rumph came around the end and tackled rookie HB Adam Odewumi for the safety. San Francisco still couldn't muster another touchdown, but their defense in turn also forced a punt from the Eagles, which Drew Jones returned 60 yards for the touchdown to make the score 26-0.

    4th Quarter
It was about time Philly went somewhere. They finally put together a scoring drive and in the end, Maddox found WR McMullen for a 9-yard score. The 49ers answered back with another TD drive of their own, ending in a 22-yard pass to Barlow to increase the lead to 33-7. From their own 47 yard line on the ensuing drive, Maddox dropped back and aired it out 53 yards to WR McMullen to make it 33-14. With just over two minutes left, Erickson showed his aggressive side as the Niners marched into the redzone and finally Garcia found Owens for a 9-yard touchdown to up the score to 40-14.

Final: San Francisco pleases home crowd with 40-14 win!

    Player of the Game
    QB Jeff Garcia - 111.6, 27/39, 346 yards, 3 TD, INT

    Key Performances
RB Kevan Barlow - 19 att, 90 yards, TD - 4 rec, 60 yards, TD
WR Terrell Owens - 9 rec, 113 yards, TD
WR Brandon Lloyd - 7 rec, 66 yards
RE Andre Carter - 5 tackles, 2 sacks

    San Francisco 49ers: 10-2

Week 14: Chicago (8-4) at San Francisco (10-2) Monday Night Football
The fans were given even more incentive to come to this great matchup as it was Fan Appreciation Night, and those who got there early enough were awarded with team autographs.

      1st Quarter
San Francisco received the ball first, and much to the delight of the home crowd, their offense was on the field for 12 plays and 7:50 before Barlow finally ended the drive with a one yard run on 3rd & goal. Chicago responded four plays later, quieting the roaring crowd, with a 78-yard pass to Dez White from Rex Grossman.

      2nd Quarter
Chandler's 41-yard field goal gave SF a slight 10-7 edge. This was the case until Julian Peterson came up with an interception at the Bears 31. Two plays later, Garcia hooked up with Brandon Lloyd for the 30 yard score. The 49ers forced Chicago to punt and then proceeded to drive once more. The drive stalled after Barlow went down with a broken finger, and the Niners would have to settle for a 39-yard field goal and a 20-7 lead. Barlow's injury appeared not to be serious, and it is expected he'll play next week, but he was done for this one. Chicago made it into San Francisco territory but Ahmed Plummer stepped in front of a Grossman pass and returned it all of 72 yards to make it 27-7. Edinger gave Chicago three more points with a 46-yard kick.

      3rd Quarter
Most of this quarter was a defensive display from both sides. Late in the quarter, Drew Jones got an interception at the Chicago 40 yard line. Later in the drive, Chandler set up for a 41-yard try, but the kick was wide left.

      4th Quarter
Feeling the game was in hand, Coach Erickson let Dorsey finish it out. On the Niners first drive with Dorsey in, They made it to within the Bears 5 before Dorsey hit Terrell Owens on an out pattern for a 4-yard score and a 34-10 lead. Grossman led Chicago down the field, and found Desmond Clark from 6 yards away. Anthony Thomas' run made for a successful two point conversion and the score was 34-18. The Bears attempted an onside kick... and recovered it! But Drew Jones ended any hopes they had with another interception at the San Francisco 43.

Final: San Fran looks impressive on MNF with a 34-18 win!

      Player of the Game
CB Ahmed Plummer - 4 tackles, sack, INT, Def TD

      Key Performances
      QB Jeff Garcia - 113.1, 21/27, 221 yards, TD
      QB Ken Dorsey - 154.9, 3/3, 35 yards, TD
RB Kevan Barlow - 13 att, 64 yards, TD
WR Terrell Owens - 9 rec, 92 yards, TD
      RB Brian Westbrook - 12 att, 55 yards - 3 rec, 31 yards
CB Drew Jones - 5 tackles, 2 INT

      San Francisco 49ers: 11-2

Week 15: San Francisco (11-2) at Dallas (5-8)
This wasn't even a game... ever.

            1st Quarter
On the opening drive, Dallas was forced to punt... a pattern that persisted throughout the game. The 49ers, on the other hand, marched the length of the field before handing it to Beasley to punch through a couple defenders and get the rock into the endzone. Derek Smith recovered a fumble at the Dallas 33 and this led to a 42-yard field goal by Chandler.

            2nd Quarter
Early in the second quarter, Barlow added a 1-yard score of his own. This made it 17-0. The Cowboys offense actually seemed to get worse as they were forced to punt. With 44 seconds left, the 49ers were "just trying to get into field goal position." says Coach Erickson. The result? Garcia hit Owens over the middle of the field and he proceeded to out run two defenders on his way to an 82-yard touchdown, giving the Niners a comfortable 24-0 lead at the half.

            3rd Quarter
This quarter featured Barlow scoring on runs of 2 yards and 9 yards. Oh, and it's possible that Dallas' offense was on the field at some point, but it has yet to be confirmed.

            4th Quarter
Dorsey came in to finish this one. Somehow, he failed to add a touchdown of his own, as this seemed to be the popular thing to do. Instead, Chandler added another 25-yard field and San Fran held onto a 41-0 lead.

Final: SF records first shutout under Owner Donald McKee and Coach Erickson, defeating Dallas 41-0!!

            Player of the Game
RB Kevan Barlow - 31 att, 116 yards, 3 TD

            Key Performances

            QB Ken Dorsey - 116.7, 3/4, 81 yards
WR Terrell Owens - 6 rec, 182 yards, TD

            San Francisco 49ers: 12-2

DIVISIONAL PLAYOFFS: Seattle (11-5) at San Francisco (13-3)
The 49ers had gotten knocked out in the same round last season. They looked forward to rookie QB Roderick Finley coming into town...

                        1st Quarter
On the opening drive, San Francisco's offense... *gasp*... sputtered and they were forced to punt. Signs did not initially look good. Seattle, however, found it relatively easy to make it to the three before Shaun Alexander took a sweep the rest of the way to put Seattle ahead 7-0 early. Before the quarter ended, San Francisco responded with a 13-play, 71-yard, 5:59 drive ending with a 16 yard pass to Terrell Owens from Garcia to tie things up.

                        2nd Quarter
This is where the defense kicked in. Neither offense could go anywhere. About halfway through, Zack Bronson intercepted Finley's pass at the Seahawks' 25. This only led to a 35-yard field goal from Chandler, though, as SF took a narrow 10-7 lead.

                        3rd Quarter
On their first drive of the second half, Seattle was able to tie things up when Kris Brown nailed a 46-yard field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, Drew Jones fumbled the ball away at the 28. On the next play, however, Alexander fumbled right back at the 26... to Jones! San Francisco was still unable to move, though, and punted it away.

                        4th Quarter
Another 48-yard field goal from Brown put Seattle on top 13-10. With 1:28 left, San Francisco finally put together some sort of drive and Chandler hit a 34-yard field goal to tie it at 13. It appeared we'd be heading to over time until Roderick Finley began completing passes left and right. Eventually, with 20 ticks left on the clock, Seattle was on the 21 yard line, and K Kris Brown kicked the game-winning 38-yard field goal that gave Seattle a 16-13 lead.

Final: San Fran up-ended in divisional playoffs again, this time 16-13!
