    Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 3: Denver (1-1) at San Francisco (2-0)

    1st Quarter
On the opening drive, San Francisco's offense finally got moving on 3rd & long when Seneca Wallace hit Eric Johnson for a 15-yard gain. After that, Barlow did the rest. Wallace tossed him the ball on a sweep and Barlow got around the corner to the outside and outran three Denver defenders en route to a 56-yard touchdown. The Broncos were not to be put away as their rookie QB Percy Sidney led them down the field with multiple passes to WR Caleb Roberts and a few nice runs by Clinton Portis. On 2nd & Goal, Portis found a hole and earned the touchdown, tying the game at 7.

    2nd Quarter
The 49ers went down the field in their normal fashion and Wallace found Owens for a short 3-yard touchdown. One play was all it took for Denver to tie it once more. And with that play, Portis out-did Barlow for the time being with a 70-yard run of his own. San Francisco's offense was still going full-steam and from the 28 yard line, Barlow ran up the middle and found a gaping hole, allowing him to burst to paydirt, giving San Francisco back their lead 21-14. Jeff Chandler tried to add a 37-yard field goal before the half, but it went wide right.

    3rd Quarter
After returning a Bronco's punt to the Denver 43, San Francisco had no problem once again setting themselves up for success. From the 2 yard line, Seneca Wallace held onto the ball himself, rushing in for the touchdown. A 31-yard field goal from Chandler upped the score to 31-14. The Niners defense forced another punt, but Drew Jones fumbled away the return at the San Francisco 36.

    4th Quarter
The turnover by Jones set up Denver for a score and on 3rd & Goal from the 1, the 49ers guessed run, but QB Percy Sidney dropped back and found rookie back-up TE Leonardo Irving for the touchdown making it 31-21. With about 5 minutes left in the game, the Niners put the game away as Wallace threw a 4-yard out pass to Barlow in the back of the endzone.

Final: San Francisco sends Denver packing as they win 38-21!

    Player of the Game
    RB Kevan Barlow - 26 att, 209 yards, 2 TD - 1 rec, 4 yards, TD

    Key Performances
    QB Seneca Wallace - 126.7, 18/25, 228 yards, 2 TD
WR Terrell Owens - 6 rec, 77 yards, TD

    San Francisco 49ers: 3-0

    Next Game: @ Sharks (2-1)

      Superstar Signs New Contract!
The San Francisco 49ers negotiated a new deal with one of their biggest playmakers on the offense. A player they know they need if they want to win another Super Bowl. WR Terrell Owens, who was on the final year of his contract, signed a new deal with the Niners. The deal is for 3 years, and is worth $23.03 million with Owens receiving a $4.05 million signing bonus. Many were speculating Owens to be worth much more than what he signed for. Asked why he signed the deal that he did, Owens replied "I love this place. I love the fans. I want to be a 49er for the rest of my career."

In other roster news, QB Jeff Garcia's holdout continues, and according to his agent, there is very little possibility of the two sides reaching an agreement this season. The agent also declined to comment on whether Garcia would retire at year's end, or if he would sit out the second year left on his current contract.

I'm thinking of upping the difficulty. Suggestions?

Should I increase the All-Pro sliders or try adjusted All-Madden sliders?

Okay... before I go ahead with any owner moves, I want to say something:

I know trades happening during the season are not very realistic. However, I am on the verge of going through with a move that will be very surprising to any readers following along. My reasoning for the move: the player I'm trading I wouldn't have re-signed next season anyway (1 year left on contract) and I would rather have younger players, so I might as well build toward the future, right?

Basically: I know in real life trades don't happen that often, but if I seriously was the 49ers owner three years down the road and had the opportunity to make this trade, I would.

Also, keep in mind this is only my second trade of the whole franchise... so it's not like I'm trade-happy.

Finally, the reason for this post was: A warning of an impending trade... and I hope I don't upset any readers. I do still have some readers, right?

                        San Francisco Deals Star Player

Earlier today the San Francisco 49ers dealt away a great player at one of their offensive positions. The other side of the trade involed the Detroit Lions and the deal breaks down as so:

                        Detroit Gets:
                        FB Fred Beasley
                        7th Round Draft Pick

                        San Francisco Gets:
                        2nd Round Draft Pick
                        3rd Round Draft Pick

The deal will end up costing the Niners $110,000 against the cap next offseason, but apparently they'd rather get some youth. Owner Donald McKee notes "Letting go of Fred was a hard thing to do. The guy defines the fullback position. However, I look at this team and I see that we will soon need a bit more youth in here, so I decided to go shopping and put Beasley on the trade block. Detroit offered a 2nd and 3rd round pick so long as we threw in our 7th rounder, and a deal was born. This is nothing personal against Fred, and I hope there isn't any hard feelings, it's just business. From a business perspective, I feel we made the right move. I wish Fred all the best in Detroit." Detroit management was unavailable for comment.

As a result of the trade, San Francisco found themselves in need of a fullback and signed free agent FB Phillip Crosby to a 1 year, $1 million deal. There has also been no word from any 49ers players as to how they feel about seeing one of their good teammates traded away.

Sounds like a good trade. The Garcia situation sounds tough, my only though would be how much worse is Wallace then Garcia? If Wallace isn't that bad maybe you could release Garcia, but if Garcia is significantly better maybe it would be best to negotiate.

BTW- You could bump up the sliders for a few games to see how it feels, and could always change them back if its to tough.
