      Re: Madden 2004: Goldmine

Week 10: San Francisco (7-1) at Buffalo (6-2)
This looked like a spectacular matchup. However, an injury to Drew Bledsoe had back-up Jason Gesser starting and this just wasn't the matchup everyone was looking forward to.

      1st Quarter
Buffalo had the ball first and drove a little bit but their drive ended when Jason Gesser's pass was intercepted at midfield by Boulware. The 49ers took over and moved the ball themselves, but had the same result: on 3rd & 8, Garcia threw an interception at the Buffalo 10 yard line. This turnover was followed by a 3 and out by the Bills. The only offense in the quarter turned out to be Chandler's 27-yard field goal.

      2nd Quarter
The second quarter was mostly defense as well. Late in the quarter, CB Jimmy Williams intercepted Gesser and ran it back to Buffalo's 5 yard line. On the next play, Barlow ran it in to make the score 10-0 at the half.

      3rd Quarter
On the opening drive, San Francisco made it down to the one yard line. Tired, Barlow went to the sidelines for a play. Hearst came into the game. They hiked the ball... tossed to Hearst...defense closed in... and Hearst found Owens in the back of the endzone! After Buffalo punted the ball, Barlow broke loose on a 70-yard run to get the ball to the 15. The next play Jeff Garcia found Eric Johnson who broke a tackle at the goaline to get into the endzone and make it 24-0.

      4th Quarter
The 49ers offense continued to be productive. From the 28-yard line, Owens caught his second touchdown, this time with the pass coming from Garcia to put the Niners ahead 31-0. The defense relaxed a little bit, and Jason Gesser was able to hook up with WR Reed for a touchdown but it was too little too late.

Final: San Francisco leaves Buffalo with a 31-7 victory!

      Player of the Game
      RB Kevan Barlow - 25 att, 169 yards, TD - 2 rec, 3 yards

      Key Performances
      QB Jeff Garcia - 78.2, 16/31, 187 yards, 2 TD, INT
TE Eric Johnson - 6 rec, 64 yards, TD
WR Terrell Owens - 5 rec, 62 yards, 2 TD

      San Francisco 49ers: 8-1

      Next Game: vs Jets (6-3)

Week 11: New York Jets (6-3) at San Francisco (8-1)
The Jets came into San Francisco hoping to pull off an upset. The game came down to the wire.

            1st Quarter
On the opening drive, New York was forced to punt. That was the least of their troubles, however, as on that drive QB Chad Pennington went down to a pinched nerve. Initial reports assume he'll miss at least 4 weeks. New York hopes he'll be back to 100% by playoff time. San Francisco started out with a decent drive but it stalled around the Jets 35. At 4th & 11, they didn't want to punt, but knew it would be hard to obtain the first. Instead, Coach Erickson called for Jeff Chandler... and Chandler came through with a 52-yard field goal to open up the scoring. The Jets were forced to bring in back-up QB Brooks Bollinger. Their offense did nothing and were forced to punt. Just before the quarter ended, the score became 6-0 following Chandler's second field goal, this one 39 yards.

            2nd Quarter
Things got worse for New York when Bollinger threw a pass that got intercepted by Tony Parrish at their own 17 yard line. San Francisco used this turnover opportunity to finally get into the endzone on an 8-yard run by FB Fred Beasley. It was now 13-0. The Niner defense did not let up at all and forced yet another punt. From their own 13 yard line, Jeff Garcia dropped back to pass and found Antonio Freeman. Freeman quickly found a defender who put him and the ball on the ground. The Jets recovered the fumble at SF's 18 and Doug Brien nailed a 32-yard field goal before the half ended to make it 13-3.

            3rd Quarter
The 49ers started off driving fairly well. On a second down, Jeff Garcia launched a pass that fell into the hands of New York's Abraham, who took it back to San Fran's 40. Bollinger and the Jets put together a good drive that ended with Curtis Martin finding the endzone from 1 yard out. The next drive of the 49ers yielded the same result as the Jets' Beasley picked off Garcia and made it back to their 29 yard line. At least the Niner defense held strong and forced a 23-yard field goal that knotted the game at 13.

            4th Quarter
Jeff Garcia threw three straight incomplete passes and the 49ers punted the ball away. Peter Boulware made Bollinger pay for a bad mistake by intercepting the ball and getting it to New York's 27. Not wanting to risk another turnover and upset at how he was performing, Coach Erickson benched Garcia in favor of Tim Rattay. Rattay only went 1/1 on the drive following the interception, but it was all that was needed as it set up a 3-yard run by Barlow to get the 49ers back on top 20-13. The Jets were not done yet. Bollinger led New York downfield in a matter of minutes and on 4th & Goal from the 5, found rookie WR Omar Simms to tie the game at 20. With 1:47 left, San Francisco had the time and the timeouts to make a try to go downfield. They quickly found themselves facing a 3rd & 3, but Rattay found Antonio Freeman in the open field for a big gain. From here they continued downfield all the way to the 26 yard line. With 5 seconds left, Jeff Chandler showed he had ice in his veins by making good on a 43-yard field goal attempt!

            Final: San Francisco survives 23-20!

            Player of the Game
            K Jeff Chandler - 2/2 XP, 3/3 FG (52, 39, GW 43)

            Key Performances
            QB Jeff Garcia - 41.1, 14/25, 154 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT
            QB Tim Rattay - 109.0, 2/3, 37 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
RB Kevan Barlow - 25 att, 89 yards, TD
FB Fred Beasley - 4 att, 20 yards, TD
TE Eric Johnson - 5 rec, 71 yards
WR Antonio Freeman - 5 rec, 66 yards

            San Francisco 49ers: 9-1

Week 12: San Francisco (9-1) at New Orleans (4-6)
San Francisco came in looking to easily extend their winning streak. In the end, they got one wacky game.

                  1st Quarter
On the opening drive, the Saints were faced with 3rd & long. No problem for them, however, as Aaron Brooks found WR Kareem Kelly behind the secondary for a 72 yard score. San Francisco got the ball but on Garcia's first completed pass, TE Eric Johnson dropped the ball and New Orleans recovered at the Niners 27. This led to a short drive ending with Deuce McAllister taking it in from 3 yards away. Down 14-0, the Niners needed to produce something. San Francisco mustered a 10-play, 69-yard drive that finished with a 4-yard run from Fred Beasley to make it 14-7.

                  2nd Quarter
New Orleans' offense was simply on fire. They crossed midfield and then Brooks hooked up with Dante Stallworth for a 40-yard bomb making it 21-7. After forcing the 49ers to punt, it seemed like the Saints were going to run away with this won. However, Boulware intercepted Brooks at the New Orleans 29. This led to a 1-yard drive from Kevan Barlow to cut the Saints' lead once again to 7. The 49ers managed to force a punt and Chandler added a 45-yard field goal before halftime to make it 21-17.

                  3rd Quarter
The Niners went nowhere on their initial drive, and were forced to punt. It only took New Orleans one more play to get a touchdown. Again it was Kareem Kelly, this time burning the secondary for an 80-yard score. The 49ers didn't give up, however, and managed to stay in the game with a consistent drive. Barlow rushed it up the gut from the 7-yard line and the score was 28-24. McAllister would fumble at the New Orleans 22 and San Francisco was in business after Beasley score his second rushing touchdown of the day, this one a 3-yarder. The score gave San Fran a narrow 31-28 lead.

                  4th Quarter
Early in the fourth quarter, the 49ers got the ball back and drove downfield again. Garcia found Owens from 9 yards away and at 38-28, it seemed the Niners had found a way to survive this unbelievable Saints offense. From near midfield Brooks found Kelly once again for a 49-yard touchdown. The kid was playing miraculously. The Saints stopped the 49ers' rushing attempts and New Orleans went on another drive. Apparently the San Francisco defense was getting a little tired. From the 29 yard line, Brooks found a wide-open Joe Horn as the Saints took a 42-38 lead. San Francisco was trying to make another comeback, but with over two minutes they were stopped in their own territory. They had to punt. Saints rookie CB Derek Chandler ended any hope of a comeback with a 67-yard punt return to seal the deal at 49-38.

Week 13: New England (9-2) at San Francisco (9-2)
A battle of the titans? The score makes it seem closer than it was. The Patriots gameplanned for Barlow, so the Niners had to find another route to take.

                        1st Quarter
On the opening drive, New England found themselves being forced to punt. The 49ers, on the other hand, went on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ate up 7:09. Problem is that they had to settle for a 38 yard field goal from Chandler.

                        2nd Quarter
Not much happened in this quarter until the two-minute mark. Tom Brady found Deion Branch for a 58-yard score to put the Pats ahead 7-3. With just over 1:30 left to play, Garcia completed some huge passes to get SF in range for Chandler's 25-yard field goal to set the score at 7-6 for halftime.

                        3rd Quarter
After being sacked on first down, Garcia dropped back and hit TE Eric Johnson for a 56-yard pass all the way to the New England 36. A few plays later, Garcia dropped back again from the 7 yard line. Finding no one open, he ran it up the middle himself for the touchdown to give San Francisco the lead back at 13-7.

                        4th Quarter
Chandler hit another field goal early in the quarter to give the Niners a little breathing room. Ahmed Plummer intercepted Tom Brady at the 29 yard line of New England. Just as the 49ers looked primed for another score, Garcia was intercepted in the endzone. San Francisco would forced a punt from the Patriots. After going nowhere, the 49ers had to give the ball back. On the first play, Brady was again intercepted, this time by Boulware who was taken down at the Patriots' 28. This turnover set up Chandler's fourth field goal and made it 19-7. New England fired back with a a quick pass to Troy Brown who turned upfield and ran the rest of the way for an 81-yard score. At 19-14, it seemed the game wasn't over. As their was under two minutes left, New England was forced to kick an onside kick which the Niners recovered. Starting from their own 40, San Francisco quickly wound up with 3rd & 8. Coach Erickson had seen enough from the lackluster running game and had Garcia put it in the air. After getting the first down and after a few more plays, Garcia hooked up for the 9-yard score with Eric Johnson to put it away at 26-14. New England had no chance as there was less than thirty seconds left.

Man, just realized that loss to the Saints deflated my fan support a little bit.

I know the Rams coming to town will draw fans, but I'm also thinking of upping the advertising and making it a Fan Appreciation Day. Don't F.A.D's bring in more fans? I want to finally have a sellout crowd, especially for a big game like this.
